OS X 10.10 Yosemite: All The Little Things

I hope this hasn't been mentioned before -- the lock screen when waking up from sleep now shows an apple logo in the top left corner. I tried taking a screenshot but couldn't since it thought I was entering my password 🙂

Does it do anything? I.e. open the menu if you click on it?

No. It's completely pointless. As if the two Apple logo's on my iMac aren't indication enough I'm running a Mac.

I think the user was asking if continuing to use Time Machine with Yosemite would somehow render previous Mavericks backups as unusable in the event of a needed recovery. I do not know the answer, but I can definitely see why the user would want to do that. And I think it is a possibility that Time Machine would still be able to be used for a Mavericks recovery, if one simply went back in "time" pre-Yosemite, but I can't say for sure, as I've never tested it...

Of course it would work as long as you do not delete the backup or time machine does not remove it automatically (if that were to happen).

Like I said before I do not see any reason to run a backup of a beta program I'd personally prefer to wait until the official update comes out to do a backup.
I think if someone had files they needed to backup they should instead create copies of the files and place them onto another disk.
I also had Time Machine setup to automatically backup when my HardDrive was plugged in and one day after installing Yosemite and it ran Time Machine.

Unless you are telling me that Time Machine would give me the option to upgrade to the new iTunes and see what it is like and if I do not like it I can go back to my backup and get my old iTunes back would be the only positive that I can think of at the moment.

Nope. It just sits there and doesn't do anything. Kind of silly looking IMO.

But there aren't any downsides to running Time Machine on Yosemite, so it comes down to, like you say, personal preference.

double-click window frame = old green button behaviour

If you double-click the window frame (title bar), you'll get the old&great green button behavior.
That's great for Finder and Safari as you don't have to miss that little feature, instead you're even faster now, as double-clicking the title bar is much more convinient than clicking that small button.

Spotlight Search with Bing

The fact that Spotlight Search has been changed to using Bing rather than Google has me concerned.

I am not a fan of Bing.
Meanwhile, I am a huge fan of Google and its software. When I get a new Windows computer, the first thing I do is start Internet Explorer and download Google Chrome. On work computers, l change all default searches in Internet Explorer to use Google. I feel it's a much better search engine.

So, if Spotlight Search can be changed to Bing, I suspect it should be able to be changed to whatever the user wants (back to Google!).

Extending Safari, to include functionality that was removed by Apple, is far from ideal. An extension can not show the address in the expected place and so, there's an additional bar – below tabs, below the bookmarks bar.

Still, no title. I hope for Apple to come to its senses before Yosemite is released.

Postscript: a second screenshot. Since the so-called address bar of Safari has lost functionality, I'd like to lose it altogether (and favour the FullPath extension). Unfortunately: if it's removed from the toolbar, there's no visible response to Command-L; and it's not as easy to search.

So in the second shot I have demoted Apple's effort to the far right, reduced the number of buttons and shifted those, too, to the right. Also, the bookmarks bar is hidden.

With all of those changes, I can more easily see the address in the third party bar.

itunes 12 (and all previous versions)

I'm really getting tired of Itunes. When I search an artist, lets say Paul McCartney, I see the page where singles, albums, video's are. When I click then on albums/ 'see all' I see all his albums. I then look for "band on the run" for example but when I then go back I don't get back to the previous page where all his albums are but I come on the page where albums, singles, video's are. Highly irritating! Another thing is that I can't swipe back because that does not function in Itunes 12 OSX Yosemite!

Anyone know of a way to disable Image Capture app from auto-starting after connecting iPad/iPhone to MacBook?

light green in notification center for stocks is nearly impossible tot read the thin white font in front of it using 27" led cinema display. how does this ultra bright on bright color scheme make any sense to anyone? also when safari is not the clicked in focus window the top text color is nearly invisible with the background. sounds fine since it isn't in focus but really it usually is not in focus while just scrolling the magic mouse around and up and down a webpage.

why make people strain to read something? i have good eyes and it is still too hard to read.

Do you have iPhoto? If so, do the following:

1) Open iPhoto
2) Click on the "iPhoto" menu
3) Click on the "Preferences..." menu item
4) Click on the "General" icon
5) Open the "Connecting camera opens:" drop-down menu
6) Click on the "No application" menu item

The attached screenshot shows this menu, with the appropriate option highlighted.

That has always been there, though previously it only shows up for iMacs/Mac mini/Mac Pro where there isn't a battery in the system. If you're running a laptop, it's probably showing up in error during the dev period.

The option is there on my iBook G4 and I would assume it is there on other mac laptops, because if the battery dies or is removed, that is considered a power failure. Oh, but the wording for the option IS different. In yosemite it says to start up automatically, while in older versions of OS X it says to reboot automatically. That may be what ACDIT was referring to, and is a little thing.

Coincidentally while writing this post, the battery in the iBook died (although it reported around 80%) and I don't feel like finding the charger, so no screenshot for proof.

I don't have that third checkbox on my 2011 MBP, but it's definitely there in my Mac mini. Maybe they also include it on laptops where they know the battery now works as well as a power brick? HAha. 🙂 😉

Start up automatically after a power failure

I see the preference, and can enable it, but enabling it here would be almost completely senseless – because for the preferred startup volume, FileVault 2 is enabled.

Note, I'm on Mountain Lion. Can't be certain whether Start up automatically after a power failure was an option for me with encrypted Mavericks or encrypted pre-release Yosemite.

Whilst not certain, I'm fairly sure that the option was there (and made little sense) with encrypted Mavericks.
