Hopefully they'll undo whatever they did that squashed my battery life from three hours in 10.3.5 to 36 minutes (at best) in 10.3.6.

And I'm not the only one.

And anyone who says I'm imagining it is clearly part of the conspiracy.

Nope, you're not the only one.

My battery life has not been so signifigantly reduced as yours, but it is defnitely noticeable.

Today is Tuesday, maybe today!

We're running out of numbers - Tiger here we come.

What about SAFARI update? I'd like to see it first.

yes, 1.2.5  :p

Seriously, I need a big improvement in safari, there are some pages I can't visit because the rendering is wrong, I'm very happy using Safari but at the same time I'm getting used to Camino, of Course camino needs to learn some tricks from safari but speed-wise I can see the difference for big pages (ebay, my bank, amazon...)

Safari has gotten to the point (for my needs at least) where I've removed the bug button.

Now, if you guys at Apple could get Safari to quit using RAM as a cache mechanism, that'd be swell, and I'd have no more gripes.

Gaming update would sure be a plus, considering how bad the incorporation is... the same video card under Windows with the same specs runs a lot smoother in games. That might be a port/optimiztion issue though, who knows... with so little native OS X games these days there are really few games one can compare performance with. There isn't even something like Aquamark or 3Dmark for mac to test game performances in real world situations. There's also no ways to tweak the graphic card which sucks.

On the other hand we have had a fully accelerated GUI (through Quartz) for a few years and Windows still haven't caught up.

10.3.6 have had no problem on a dual 2.0Ghz G5, a iMac G5 (1.8Ghz), and a G4 Powerbook except the frequent disconnect from Windows servers on AirPort Extreme, but that is really a compound problem not a single isolated issue (router and server tweaks solved most of them, server disconnect is still a bit of problem though...) so I'm happy with it. Hopefully 10.3.7 would be a bit better.

This is a critical problem that I think is one of the reasons (beside the graphic tweaks that were rumored long ago) 10.3.7 is coming out so fast... if it is indeed coming out this week.

As for running out of numbers before Tiger, who said we can't have 10.3.X just to mess people who's been calling the 10.3 builds collectively as 10.3.x a bit :p ?

It should be good, but this really is a fast update since 10.3.6... and amid all that security updates no less. I wonder what else is in the package this time.

Off topic a little...

I hope nobody will care that I post this here but I think I can get a reliable answer from this thread...

OS 10.3.2 seems a little slow on our eMac. If I upgrade to 10.3.6 will it speed things up. Wasn't there something in on the recent updates that dealt with indexing or something like that?

I just updated my very old G4/400 to 10.3.6 and it's going really, really nice - faster than my eMac. ???

Bring it on... I need my finder to be ok again... cannot switch between windows within Finder with command+~ ... what the ????

I can with other apps, it's just finder ... really odd! ohh wait, and photoshop has the same problem...
Can't help you with the Finder but in Photoshop use Control+~ (command+~ shows all channels).

No it doesn't work either, no window changing within Finder, Photoshop, MS Office (discovered that few minutes ago), Appleworks (since this morning) ... what's up??? I just talked to a friend and the only common point there is that all of them are carbon apps... repairing permissions and restarting didn't help... have been checking in google, IRC, calling people but what I find odd is my activity monitor...

Edit: 3 windowsserver running at the same time????? 2 under my username and 1 under root??

Yeah, Safari needs an update.

There are some CSS issues that need to be resolved, and built-in gestures would be cool.

A few of the 10.3.x updates have brought noticable speed tweaks. Although at this point, I'd say just wait for 10.3.7.

That is reassuring :( Now I will wait a week and see what odd problems others are having. :)

I am not becoming a lab rat again I lost out on some important data the last time around a back-up and main HDD failing that was my worst day in computing history. :(
And how is this the fault of the update? If your harddrive was failing, the update wouldn't have affected that.

Remember, backing up important data regularly is a good idea.

 Somebody's getting fired for this leak...

I've had that same issue! But it randomly goes away and comes back. Not being able to window-switch in an application really sucks... makes me think of my WinXP box.
Have you tried restarting? Logging out and then back in? I did the latter when it got really bad one time... and make sure you don't just change users, but instead REALLY log out. Then when you go back in it restarts most of your processes that are always-on, background style things.

I just hope that this update addresses the 10.3.6 FireWire problems. I'm still running 10.3.5 out of fear that I won't be able to use my FireWire drive anymore.

Yes, today is Tuesday. Maybe will hear something by 12 noon EST.

I'm sure that Apple could do some creative things with numbering. Such as 10.3.9.1!

uhh.. you should only have one windowserver process.

Appleinsider hinted that Safari 1.3 isn't too far away.

10.3.10

Yum

Hopefully this will address the lingering issues with AFP and firewire drives. Funny that two of the most problematic issues with OS X are with tech invented by Apple themselves.

Each update to OS X has truly improved the system, beyond just adding tasty new features. Apple should be seriously lauded for this, despite their flaws.

By the way, first post. MY first post, I mean.

Version numbers

FYI, it is perfectly acceptable in software versioning to use point numbers higher than nine. E.g., 10.3.10 or 10.3.25.

But don't tell Steve Jobs that. I want Tiger asap, too! :)

perhaps hidden inside will be support for the DP 3Ghz G5, PB G5, flash ipods and a built in coffee maker.

If 10.3.7 is out this week, I'll definatley wait for a few days before I install it.

After a previous update (10.3.4 I think) killed my little Powerbook, I'm just a little scared when a new update is released.
Thankfully a reinstall sorted the problem.

Perhaps the new drivers for the grphics cards will help with game performance. At least it can't make them slower <?>

Oh well back to reality and work.

Oh the joy

Welcome to MacRumors, it's nice to have you aboard. A well done thoughtful first post indeed, thank you. Apple does deserve a lot of credit for the work that they are doing.

An anonymous tip to MacRumors says that 10.3.7 is ready for release this week. Expectations for it include improved AFP support for saving documents with long file names, improved OpenGL technology and updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers, improved FireWire device compatibility, updated Preview application, improved compatibility for third party applications, and previous standalone security updates.

OS X 10.3.7 was previously rumored to have begun testing in November, directly following the release of the 10.3.6 update.

Hopefully I can finally put my FAQ:

http://www.macmaps.com/firewirebug2.html to rest. This has been a long, long road. 10.3.6's Firewire compatibility in some ways was even worse than 10.3 through 10.3.5, as just the fact of having the wrong firmware Firewire drive connected during the update would cause a problem. Hopefully 10.3.7 doesn't have that problem.

All you scaredy cats  can wait forever to do this update. When it comes, I'm updating ASAP and I'll let you know how great my machine runs afterwards. Never had problems with updates and I'm not knocking on wood either. I trust Apple and I take care of my machines. Nothing to fear but fear itself. :)

There are important steps prior and after an update to avoid problems:

I did a lot to fix my problem with the no window switching within the same app. but no success, as reported, Finder, Photoshop, Appleworks, MS Office (I wanted to blame MS for this ;) :p J/K) are not allowing me to use command+~ to switch (ctrl + ~ : Photoshop) , now increasing the list, Vectorworks ... conclusion: Carbon problem... the people from apple have already news about that and hope they can help...
