What does it take to put out an update where you don't have to EJECT thumb drives before removing them, without an error popping up telling that you removed it improperly??

Well, since OS X is based on BSD, which is Unix, and in Unix you have to mount and unmout drives, I would say NEVER.

Why on earth would you be so paranoid about an system update? I mean...maybe if it was from MS...but I would never expect an official "Update" straight from Apple to fry my computer lol

IIRC, it was 10.2.6 that totally hosed lots of machines, mine included. Somebody can correct my R. There was an iTunes update that deleted hard drives with a space in the volume name, too.

Windows does it. It writes the data to the USB stick immediately as it might be removed at any time, *nix OS's (including OS X) don't do this.

If you just pull them out on OS X you can (and I have) got data corruption.

Finally! Someone on my side! :p JK Thanks to all for this discussion.

I just hope it fixes this damn memory leak. Rebooting once a day is for Windows, not OS X.
Seems every times there's an update someone posts a comment about some mysterious bug I've never heard of.

What memory leak?

If you're talking about the pmTool one that was fixed back in 10.4.9.

Well, since OS X is based on BSD, which is Unix, and in Unix you have to mount and unmout drives, I would say NEVER.

Unix is easy to extend. This one is easy. You keep the drive mounted read-only until such time as you need to do a write. Then you 'mount -rw -o remount' the drive, and after the write is done, you 'mount -ro -o remount' it again. Sure, there's a small performance penalty, but I'd pay it.

No it doesn't. FAT and NTFS are just a little more forgiving of unclean unmounts then some other filesystems are.

You are still supposed to eject the media in Windows before you unplug the device to ensure no lost data.

Also, Windows doesn't do write-caching with drives that are marked as removable - so data loss is unlikely unless you pull the drive while it is actually writing.

No Way...

I would just like to say that this software will never get beyond 10.4.99. Because the fields just would not support this type of scheme. I am pretty sure that they would have to go to 10.4.99.a But this hasn't been implemented yet.

And it will NEVER happen!

Could anyone confirm if this fixes some problems left by the Safari 3 beta?

I know some people had problems with Microsoft Messenger, but I would like to know about Adium's chat transparency...my message windows hate being solid :(

Beata 3 on my mac is great on my dell at work sucks, on the tool bar at the top i get no titles just a blank bar no file dit view history no nothing,, any suggestions?

Installation no problem at all on my MP 8-core with Safari 3.

AND I was able to import an M8 RAW image straight into Aperture. This should keep me busy until next Friday.

Cool!

iChat?

has anyone noticed an improvement in iChat with Safari 3? i use CHAX and have had minor problems with iChat after i got Safari 3.

2 restarts for me as well.

Geekbench score is about 90-100 points higher, not sure if that's just coincidence. Definitely seems a bit snappier booting up and this is on an absolutely brand new C2D MacBook (5 days old).

No it doesn't - You have to eject the drive from the taskbar, and its more complicated in Windows (3/4 button presses as opposed to one)

Sorry to be contrary, but.. it does :)

XP can be set to optimise write caching for removable devices. In fact, by default, write caching to thumb drives is disabled by default, so you can in fact yank a flash drive once you're done with it on XP. Just follow the reasonable precaution of making sure you've not got anything open on the drive. Anyway, having write-caching disabled means you're never going to leave the drive's filesystem in an irregular state unless you pull it mid-save.

Would it be nice if OS X did that? Sure... but I'm not about to bleat about it. It's just how the thing works. It's a different situation with OS X anyway, since spotlight might be poking away at the disk.

Oh, and 10.4.10 has no probs on my G4 Mac Mini, Core Duo MBP or Core Duo MB.

[edit: bah! I type too slow! As for why have the eject button... well, because, frankly, it's every Windows function and application's duty to stuff as much as possible into the system tray, of course! I kid, I kid... Nah. Really, it's there because some devices it will use write caching (hard disks, iPods f'rex) but others it won't. Of course, the system gives the user no indication as to which is which -- and that's why most people dutifully use the eject feature even when it's not strictly needed. So it's one of those nifty features marred by crappy implementation. Meh]

Remember everyone, repair your disk permissions lol ;)

are we really suppose to do that? i heard that unless you are dealing with a os 9 and os x on the same drive, then you should be repairing permissions, otherwise it doesn't help or hinder

Also we can finally put to rest the "omfg they will NEVER release a .10 update!!1!1!!!1!oneone!!" :D :apple:
