Is the kernel updated during such updates? I just see some lousy security updates and lousy third party updates which maybe no use to me.

It's a different situation with OS X anyway, since spotlight might be poking away at the disk.

Spotlight would only be reading the disk - so it shouldn't be a problem with the disk structure.

And, one would assume that Spotlight can handle files/directories disappearing out from underneath it - since files/directories can be deleted from a hard drive while Spotlight might be running.

I'm using Safari 3 (PPC) at the moment and Mac OS X 10.4.10 has fixed a rendering bug on a website I was having problems with, so I'm very happy with this update. :D

I got a kernel panic yesterday when I pulled out my USB thumb drive. (And yes, I had properly ejected it through Finder.) Maybe that kind of thing is what the USB updates are supposed to fix. I don't remember ever having that happen before.

XP can be set to optimise write caching for removable devices. In fact, by default, write caching to thumb drives is disabled by default, so you can in fact yank a flash drive once you're done with it on XP. Just follow the reasonable precaution of making sure you've not got anything open on the drive. Anyway, having write-caching disabled means you're never going to leave the drive's filesystem in an irregular state unless you pull it mid-save.

And who guarantees you that no app (or background app) is doing a save while you yank out your memory stick? You might have better chances of not screwing something up on Windows (thanks to write-caching) but I personally would not dare to make a statement to the effect that not ejecting memory sticks is safer either on the Mac or on Windows since I have never seen even a collection of anecdotal evidence pointing in either direction.

What Firewire Core Audio driver? Is it the one where audio turns into beeps and static? Had that happen to me before, but after I reformatted I've been fine.

It affects several Core Audio compatible firewire devices in different ways. Common problems are high CPU usuage, like 10-15%, which isn't normal. Many users also have nasty CPU spikes which causes dropped buffers and noise issues.

The beta version didn't fix the issue with my Presonus Firebox. It did fix the high CPU usage for my Saffire LE though, but it introduced issues with dropped buffers and higher latency instead.

It only affects devices that uses the built in firewire audio driver. Those who ship custom made drivers (MOTU and RME for example) doesn't have these issues.

I ran disk utility after installing and it found two permissions that were wrong, one regarding iTunes and another regarding 'secure.log' .

However these may have been there before the update. I don't verify my permissions very often..

On the plus side, everything seems operational. :)

"Memory Leak"

I just hope it fixes this damn memory leak. Rebooting once a day is for Windows, not OS X.

Now we are talking. I've been experiencing something similar on my Intel mini on 10.4.9 (and maybe before... can't remember). Not exactly once a day, but fairly regularly (as in something like once a week). And before anyone mentions the RAM, this is Apple RAM which seems OK (at least Rember thinks it is). Something is clearly wrong but I don't really know what. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one.

Works Well Here

Successful update on a stock Mac Pro with a raid boot disk. First update to not mess up my raid.

Damn it Apple still no RAW support for the Panasonic DMC-FZ50 and Hassleblad get with program. Why ad support for crappy cameras like the Panasonic LX1.

I have had that exact issue happen before, though it was a few updates ago.

Maybe this fixes it.

Real Problems Here

Safari, Mail, Itunes, ichat, iweb, and more (but not all) apps WILL NOT open. they just bounce once in the dock, then nothing. I ran the Intel update.

Can anyone help?

GUYS

just found something interesting...

in 10.4.10 a few new Displays has been added under
/System/Library/Displays/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-610

That would at least imply that the new iMacs are coming before October :D But we kinda guessed that already.

i'm just curious ... every time apple updates sofware, etc. should i do something with bootcamp as well?
