Lets please put this numbering system to rest.

Phone numbers are often typed out 111.222.3333 in the US.Thats NOT a decimal system is it ?

OS 10 is the 10th iteration of a major change in the kernel "so to speak"
OS 10.2 is the SECOND major revision of OS 10
OS 10.3.5 --5 being the fifth iteration of the 3rd major revision of OS 10.
OS 10.4.10 is the 10th iteration of the 4th major revision of OS 10.

This is NOT the decimal system. It's the "Point" system.
Think of it as a "point" in time ;)

Thats why it's called 10 "point" 4 "point" 10.

i heard some say that zero isn't a number but this is the first time i've heard anyone say ten isn't a number :)

10 is very different to .10

For example: 5.5 liters is the same as 5.50 liters and is also the same as 5.5000000 liters.

Are there any problems installing this on Macs with Safari 3 beta already installed on them?

No problems at all here (so far). Computer info below.

Bets on how many people claim placebo speed-ups?

Running it while already running OS X doesn't so much since you can repair the permissions of files that are already open.

You can change permissions of open files, there really should be no difference between running it from within OS X or from an install disk.

And who guarantees you that no app (or background app) is doing a save while you yank out your memory stick? You might have better chances of not screwing something up on Windows (thanks to write-caching) but I personally would not dare to make a statement to the effect that not ejecting memory sticks is safer either on the Mac or on Windows since I have never seen even a collection of anecdotal evidence pointing in either direction.

Well, the XP docs and indeed the label for the setting (something along the lines of "optimise for immediate removal" -- essentially removes write-caching) does seem to indicate that the eject procedure isn't necessary when the drive's not in use. However, as I noted in my post, the timing of the removal is left to the user's discretion and (even worse) although some types of device (flash drives, etc) are automatically 'safe' to remove without ejecting, some others (iPods) are not. So, it's really a 'half-feature'. A sorta-maybe-sometimes-onlywhen-butnotif feature in Windows. Works fine in certain situations, doesn't work in others. It's really more consistent just to enforce ejecting.

[edit: In summation, manu chao, I agree with you :)]

So I installed 10.4.10 and right when I pressed the button it prompted me to (which resets the computer) a kernel error occurred.
So I forced my machine off, then turned it back on. After staring at the Apple symbol for about 40 seconds, the screen went blank and the computer reset- again. 45 seconds later, I was typing this post. 10 GB of music wasn't backed up!
I'm buying an external HDD TODAY. (one with more space)

Any word if the 802.11n issue (kernel panics with certain 802.11g WAPs using encryption) is fixed with 10.4.10?

Still sleep issue

Still hasn't fixed my sleep issue. My C2D 17" won't go to sleep automatically. I've tried everything (and I mean EVERYTHING I could find out on the web, including the obvious to ridiculous). X.4.10 doesn't offer any hope for the sleep issue.

Mac os x Server Update from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10 !

The update on powerpc is a lot larger from 10.4.9server to 10.4.10 Server it is 399mb

but it isn't .10 ...it's 10.4.10 where the . is not a decimal point.

Of course it is worse than that, because if you are being pedantic and trying to claim that this is a number and 10.4.10 is the same as 10.4.1 ...

I don't know any numbers with _two_ decimal points.

Lost Spotlight

Downloaded and installed fine.

Funny thing, Spotlight won't work. It comes up but cannot find anything. every file is "no results found'. i have done permissions, reset the Spotlight cache and rebuilt the database to no avail.

Very odd and disturbing. Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions for a fix? I actually use Spotlight often.

works fine for me

for some reason it said that there were only 13 comments here... needless to say I think there is more... what is going on?

Yeah I noticed that also! Gotta be a MacRumors problem.

I also been noticing that I can never vote positive or negative on page 2 items. Been that way for me for a long time now!

Version numbering system =/= decimal number system.

A software version is structured as such: major.minor[.revision[.build]]
In other words, the new patch is Mac OS major version 10, minor version 4, revision 10. Mac OS 10.4.10

And for anyone that wants to debate that...please point out to me a valid number in the decimal system with TWO or more decimal points.

I think you were looking for ≠ (option + =, or some awful ALT + four-digit number on Windows). :)

The problem is that software makers are using a convention that involves numbers and decimal points / periods -- whether they intend for it to be considered as a decimal number or not. If software makers used commas (10,4,10), dashes (10-4-10), or some other character, it wouldn't have the same alternate connotation. Sure, using two decimal points indicates that it's not meant to be taken as a literal decimal number, but that doesn't eliminate the fact that the digit immediately to the right of a decimal point is taken to have the same precision as the digit immediately to the right of another decimal point, regardless of what other digits might be present to the right of that digit.

On the other hand, Apple could have placed the updates another digit out, inserting a zero before the first nine updates (10.4.08, 10.4.09, 10.4.10), staying more consistent with decimal notation but allowing for more than ten updates. (Of course, had Leopard been out this Spring, we might not have seen a 10.4.10.) At least we haven't gone for the zaniness of Firefox (version 2.0.0.4 anyone? looks more like an IP address than a software version).

Also, Windows doesn't do write-caching with drives that are marked as removable - so data loss is unlikely unless you pull the drive while it is actually writing.

My thumb drive's manual says that it must be designated as non-removable in order to work on XP (and I have verified that it doesn't work otherwise). This particular thumb drive is the only kind allowed where I work because of its particular encryption features (which I don't even use). When I pull it out without ejecting it, I get an error window warning me of possible data loss. To properly eject it, I count 6 clicks of the mouse.

To properly eject the same drive on my Mac is one mouse click and a single keystroke.
