Yea that sound like 'it just works' - opening a couple of applications doing some magic incantations with your mouse and 'lo and behold': Almost some minutes later you have a result that is so beautifully formated that nobody in their right mind will question the superiority of the Mac...

A solution, true. But it could be so much better. Say, for example, one could do all that without having to use the mouse, or crazy key-combos. Cupertino, start your photocopiers!

Seriously, I just hope that this update fixed my wi-fi issues, and makes my i love lamp widget work again!

I've had the sleep problems on my Pro desktop, so it isn't just on laptops. It goes through phases where I may have to force reboot 4 times in a week, then won't have to do it again for 4 months. The cycle then repeats. I can't figure out what the cause is, but I know it is a serious issue for a lot of people, as my Google search for a solution showed. Lots of posts in forums out there decrying the issue.

HA. I guess I haven't been a mac user (well...OSX anyway) long enough to know the trend.

I figured since PPC people are in uproar they would at least release security patches every now and then to keep it up to date. Then again, there's nothing saying they have to do that.
They'll likely release security patches until 10.7, since they support the current OS and the one previous for security, but that's not the same as bug-fixes and functional improvements that constitute point upgrades.

I still think there will be a 10.5.9. No insider knowledge - just a feeling based upon how far away SL is. I think SL will be released at the end of September, and two months is plenty of time for Apple to get together another dot release. They have also released dot updates shortly after a major release. I think this happened with Tiger -> Leopard.

I have a quad core G5 among my collection of 4 Macs (only non-Intel). I'm hoping Apple keeps doing Leopard updates at least throughout the next year. Ugh...need to upgrade!

You and me both. I had just upgraded my G5 to 7.5GB of RAM and 2x1TB harddrives after Christmas. :(

I'm doubting this is the last one. Leopard still has support for PowerPC users, so they might churn out more updates to keep them happy.

That's not a solution, it's a kludge!

Slightly easier (but a kludge still) is to enable showing full path in Finder window titlebars and then drag and drop the titlebar icon where you want the path text.

External monitor resolution madness

I can't believe that nobody's mentioned the problems with external monitors rendering in the wrong size following the 10.5.7 upgrade. Basically if your monitor supports HDMI, then it gets seen as a television device and all the native pixel goodness will be forgotten.

Therefore a typical 24" monitor with a resolution of 1920x1200 will end up being rendered at 1920x1080, which is very far from optimal. The only fix for this is to install a shareware utility, SwitchResX and select the old resolution setting.

Just works, nope. Just broken and the sound of silence heard from Apple.

Does anyone know if this is the external monitor fix?

Thats gotta be the monitor bug fix they mean. Better be. Just don't like how its worded. Only 1 change. Makes it sound like a external monitor bug related to waking from sleep. Well they definitely know about the issue and have had plenty of time to fix it.

Only a couple of minor fixes? I bet this update will be a another large download, and everyone will go "well, it didn't blow up, must be a worth it patch". Its a major revision number, it shouldn't be just a waste of bandwidth that changes the revision number.

Oh well, /rant. I am excited for SL though. :)

Looking down the road, I often find myself wondering what Apple will do once they run out of decimals for OSX. I mean, after 10.9, what then?

XI?

Meh.

Hey, this feature is pretty cool. Thanks for telling us.

I am pretty upset that there are no changes to Finder in Snow Leopard. The biggest pain of switching from windows has been getting used to Finders shortcomings.

Moving a bunch of folders into a folder that contains the same folder names completely overwrites the folders instead of merging. This is a huge pain when a move operation fails half way and you cant pick up where you left off.

There is no address bar in finder to copy a path.

No Cut and Paste. (Thats right I said it!)

Viewing a folder full of images in thumbnail mode is a pain in the ass to switch between thumbnail sizes. You have to go into view options to change it.
Coverflow is about as useless as my tailbone!

Mapped network drives are a huge pain. Once you get one mapped they only show up on your desktop and under your computer name in the devices list of finder. You have to manually drag it so that it shows up directly on the devices list.
Shared list of network computers in the finder side bar is a waste of time. Try using it on a network with a couple hundred computers. Even if you are already connected to a network share when you click the computer name on the network shares side bar you still have to wait a few seconds until finder gets a refreshed list of available shares on that computer....

I recently discovered Path Finder - don't remember where in MR I read about it.
I'm testing out the 30-day trial version. You MUST try it.
Like you, I've always used Windows and when switched to a Mac in '05, this was one of the things that always bothered me - and up 'till today, I still can't feel comfortable with the Finder in the same way Windows Explorer is.
Cut/paste DOES work the way you want it to - I tested it.

Google "Path Finder for Mac" and you'll find the website. What it is, it's an alternative "Finder" program. Give it a spin, you might like it.

Good luck.

Funny... I had the "waking from sleep with external monitor problem" with 10.5.5... but 10.5.6 fixed it... only for 10.5.7 to break it again. I thought it might be because I changed external monitors at some point in there, but it was really just a nuisance since I could close and re-open the lid and get it to recognize the monitor... anyway, look forward to it being fixed.

friggin ipod touch itablet snow leopard. Looks like no vegas this year.

You poor thing ... I'll send you a card; as I'm leaving for Sin City next week.

...

oh ... and I'll have my quaint DELL Vostro A90 (Netbook running Mac OS X on it) with me - since the iTablet is a few months away. :D

Hmmmm...
maybe by Labour Day?

bwahahahaha!

poor MS...poor Vista v.2 (W7)

Great Depression 2 is on our doorstep-great time to put hard to get capitlal into a bunch of pointless retails stores-that will be empty
watch MS take this in the a** but deep-and with no lube
Even with all the extra copies of Windows sold to Mac Intel users-Windows net sales dropped first time in history-and it aint just the economy
the age of the dinosaur is finally coming to an end-slowly-but surely, as computing comes into the 21st century-19th century technology/software will be left behind

Dont worry-APPLE still supports Tiger-so i think well see a couple-3 years of Leopard support & updates
