I don't know about 10.10. I'd prefer Apple to go all the way to 11 asap ;)

I bet you wouldn't. OS X 11 should signify a whole new code base for the OS, which would mean massive dislocations (think of the 9 -> 10 switch). That's not going to happen for a very long time. Right now it's a big advantage for Apple to be able to say that their OS is proven and solid, versus Microsoft's rapidly shifting OS offerings. But 10.10 is a long way off too (six years?), so who knows what may happen by then.

^ its likely that OS X 10.6 wont run on your G5 .

dude, its not like as soon as OS X 10.10 is released Apple has to start work on OS 11 (XI ) next. they can go up to OS 10.whatever-they-want… who knows? but OS 11 is definately on the horizon. im guessing that Apple will stick with FreeBSD but overhaul the kernel and code so much that it warrants a new GUI and name.

No4mk2 - looks like you might want to reread this and the EOL mac mini thread about G4/5 and SL...

Edit: With Windows 7 now possibly being dropped down to consumers at roughly the same time as Snow Leopard is slated (~June 2009), do you think we'll see a glimpse of it prior to MWSF, if we see it there?

I have read through this forum, I was just kidding. Actually I think that by the time OS 7 comes out, Apple will have sold itself to the Chinese.

Bingo!

There is no way they can go from charging $129 for 300+ new features to $129 for 10+ new features.

Personally, after defending the $129 for 300 "features" I am not sure I can defend "stability" for $129.

BZ
I can defend that. Paying for stability can not be justified. You're supposed to have stability to begin with. That's what you expect when you purchase a product.

edit: wow how did I get to this topic, lol. so old, i just realized. sorry for bumping.

OSX 11, Venom

Be cool if they moved to snake names :D like Python, Cobra :D

I've always thought so too. Anaconda, Python, Cobra, Spitting Cobra :D, Asp, Copperhead, Water Moccasin, Mamba, Rattlesnake....etc. :D

"Spitting Cobra."

Yeah I think that was the original guy's point. But also realize that stability is basically a side note of the update. We're thinking too much inside the box. Just because something isn't a user oriented, physically usable feature, doesn't mean it's not a new feature. The overall new ideas as far as OS programming goes with Snow Leopard are phenomenal. The use of GPUs as extra processing power combined with the more efficient use of new multi core chips or even new chips like the i7 and triple channel memory will be a huge power boost. I'm not trying to immediately defend spending $130 either, but I would pay $100 right off the bat just off what I've heard so far.

I agree completely.

Yes, but keep in mind that technologies like OpenCL and Grand Central will benefit future generations of Macs a lot more than the current products.

Personally, I think that 11 won't be out for a while (like 5-10 years). Apple is still trying to get all of the kinks out of Leopard still. Plus, look at the difference between 9 and 10. If the amount of difference between 10 and 11 will be the same as 9 and 10, Apple's got its work cut out!

Buy Leopard or wait for Snow Leopard. Yes, I'm still using 10.4. I'd like to do to some development for the iphone and the SDK only runs on 10.5 argh... I could buy Leopard now, but... I wonder if Snow Leopard will be out soon since Apple is offering 10.5 + iLife 09 + iWork for 40 buck more than just Leopard. Hmmm.... clearing inventory?

With my luck 10.6 would come out weeks after I buy 10.5

That's one reason why upgrading sooner rather than later isn't always a bad thing to do. Once you leave it well over a year (as anyone still on 10.4 has) then it's questionable whether upgrading now (when a new revision is imminent) is a good idea.

Having said that, as you want to do iPhone development then you won't be wasting your money as you'll get it back when you sell a gazillion copies of your first program on the App Store ;-)

The longer you wait, the stronger that argument will become. But Snow Leopard likely won't be out for months. And it might even be delayed, or have serious issues in its first release. There's no reason you shouldn't move to 10.5.6 now and wait for 10.6.2 before switching to SL.

smart advise. i never switch to a new OS before OS 10.X.3 by then most critical bugs have been discovered and fixed. usually there is some speed increase as well. and in this case apple is doing some critical changes to the system. i would be (pleasantly) surprised if this goes without hickup on all different machines. so from now till OS 10.6.3 i guess it's another 9 month. that justifies upgrading to 10.5 in the meantime. in addition i hope that snow leopard is a bit cheaper than $129 although apple doesn't need to give a rebate.
