From the Ars Technica quote, it looks like they are going off of the estimate, which we all know is wildly inaccurate half of the time.

It isn't wildly inaccurate, it just can't predict the future. It continuously takes timed samples of battery capacity depletion over time to figure out an average rate. As long as you continue the same task(s) (watching a film for example, with little-to-no interactions), you will get a very decent estimate of battery life. It's very simple and effective, if you understand that it isn't magic and can't figure out that in 5 minutes time you're going to have finished your Word document and start streaming 1080p video on YouTube.

Running 10.8.1 on my MBA 13" / 256GB / i7 / 4GB RAM. Just took mine off charge - battery 99% - running time left: 4 hours 22 minutes. Only running Safari / Outlook / LittleSnitch - nothing system intensive.

UPDATE: did and SMC Reset - now have 5 Hours 10 Minutes.

I bought a Retina MacBook Pro in late July (the base 8GB model). That's when they still shipped with Snow Leopard. I upgraded to Mountain Lion as soon as it was available.

I've been thrilled with the long battery life. I get estimates as long as 9+ hours. Real usage is never that good, but it's so much better than anything I ever got with the 2006 MacBook I replaced.

I wouldn't have even known there was an "issue" if I hadn't read this story :). Clearly it doesn't apply to everyone.

Battery Shmattery

Hopefully, it will address more than just battery life. My iMac's battery seems to be doing just fine.

It would be nice if I could get the notification box over on the left side of the screen, because I'm half blind and the peripheral vision in my left eye is going out on the right side. That's why I make the notifications show Alerts, because I'll eventually see them. If I have them set banners, I might not ever see them and they'll just disappear automatically, and I'll be wondering, "Why didn't I get a notification for that?"

It would also be nice if they'd bring back the ability to add links to PDFs in Preview. Not really sure why they took that out, and I don't really care. It just needs to be put back in.

Here's hoping that 10.8.1 doesn't reset my LaunchPad forcing me to redo the entire thing, like I had to when I upgraded from 10.7. *fingers crossed*

Why would your iMac have a battery?

iMac Battery

Why would your iMac have a battery?

Well, I was trying to load my iMac onto my spaceship, when I realized that my spaceship doesn't have an outlet to plug my iMac into. So, I unloaded it BACK off of the spaceship *sigh*, took the casing off, jammed a battery in there, put the casing BACK on, loaded it BACK ONTO the spaceship, and set off for the planet Sarcasm, where I apparently live all alone.

It's a common 100% CPU use from a bad process. Hope they fix it with this update. The process monitor can identify the process and terminate it to get your 5 hours back.

Yeah but I have thousands of clients to watch out for and this just simply won't suffice as an answer. Lets go Apple! QA stuff please!!!!

What version of Flash do you have installed? the latest is 11.4.402.265. Was it a clean install or an upgrade? have you installed all the latest firmware upgrades? what model Mac do you have? the reason why I ask is that (the hardware specifications are in my signature) these problems haven't appeared on either my iMac or MacBook Pro but I have noticed some artifacts when it comes to websites using CSS and other hardware accelerated things that Safari now does - those problems don't occur in non-hardware accelerated browsers such as Firefox.

As for my battery life - I haven't had any problems but I wonder whether it has to do with the drivers and whether they're aggressively scaling the clock speed down enough? It would be interesting to see whether it is a nvidia driver related problem or something shared thus something that is lower level that both drivers share.

I have the latest version of flash, it was an upgrade, but then I removed it and did a clean install when it didn't work well. It's a 2011 i7 mac mini, I'll need to check for firmware upgrades. The Mountain Lion installation process wasn't exactly smooth for me, the installer was corrupted and it the Apple Store a week to fix it (although I'm pretty sure I could have done it quicker, if I had a second mac at home). The problems are probably limited to my mac, if this patch doesn't fix things, I might try a clean install.

The keyword is "OS X 10.8.1 *May* Address Mountain Lion Battery Life Issues", not that it *will* address them. The people at Apple kept telling us that Lion updates fixing the Lion battery life issues, which they never did. Then, they promised us Mountain Lion would fix that. Well, the first batch of Mountain Lion is out, and it seems the battery life got even worse than it was on Lion, so twice Apple has broken it's promise about fixing bad battery life. Good thing I haven't upgraded yet, and I probably won't, period...

Is that what the meter says or how long it actually lasted?

I wouldn't trust that meter, especially right after an update. You can't really tell if it has changed until at least a couple cycles of running it all the way down and fully charging it.

I'm getting kernel panics every time my MBP (2010 with Nvidia 330m) switches from the dedicated to the integrated card, an issue that never happened before.

Is there a way to go back to 10.8.0 with a time machine backup?

Good one!

Unfortunately you'll find that the young space-faring population has no idea about sarcasm. You forgot to use emoticons!

And, of course, they don't talk much to each other, so the fine art of conversation is dead...

Since the update this morning my 2009 13" MBPro is running terribly slow. Apps, web browsers; everything is SLOW. Even a Disk Verify took more than 20-mins.

Anybody else experiencing such poor performance? Help!

Solved my own issue, simple PRAM/NVRAM reset took care of it (in case anyone else is having the same problem).

Need some input

I have the 2012 MBA 13".

I have power nap disabled, and I am loosing 30% battery life while closed in my briefcase for 48 hours. It keeps increasing my cycle count every weekend by one as I leave if plugged in all day at the office working on an external monitor.

What can I do to stop this battery drain, of course SL and my 2010 MBA would hold a charge to 95-97% over a weekend.

Really ticking me off:
Tried SMC, Repair disk permissions, closed my VM before sleep, etc.

on 10.8.1.

thnx for any guidance.

worse

Yeah, I just did the upgrade to 10.8.1 this morning. Did a full charge, and the battery now says 2:45 on 2.6/16/256 rMBP...WTW!

early 2008 macbook pro

New battery a month before Mountain Lion, so drop in battery life was noticeable.

As was a corresponding increase in heat generated - always ran fairly warm - definitely running hotter now and I am hearing the fans regularly now whereas before they were silent in all but the most extreme heat - i used to work in Egypt

Also glad to see from this thread thats its not just my bluetooth apple keyboard thats having problems disconnecting - does it several times a day with a good battery in it . Thought my keyboard was dying - hopefully its an ML issue that will get fixed

Roll on 10.8.1

If they nail these issues i'll be happy with the hill cat

I have the same MBP, but don't see any improvement after upgrading to 10.8.1, has it helped in your case?

My previous OS was Leopard and that still lasts much longer when I boot into it.

Brand new MacBook Pro 15" running 10.8.1. The computer gets 3 to 3 1/2 hours on a full charge with the screen at 60% brightness and the CPU at 5-10%.

I've been using Apple computers since 1986. Despite occasional problems, I have loved them all. But this is just pathetic. I hope they get this problem fixed, but I'm not taking any chances by hanging onto this computer past the date when I am allowed to return it.

The company hasn't lost me as a customer yet, but they're sure losing the sale on this particular machine. I guess I'll make do with my 5-year-old MacBook Pro with the broken screen.

I hope that Tim Cook remembers some of what Steve taught him and gets rid of the people who dropped the ball and let this fiasco occur.

Warren

My brand new rMBP just arrived... Battery life says just over 2 hours. I updated to 10.8.1 but the battery life hasn't improved at all :(

It is pretty sloppy. Hope they sort out a fix soon.

In the meantime, is it worth letting them know? Is there an email address or contact we should all write to? Should I make my voice heard by booking a Genius Bar appointment and taking it in there?

I guess I should use the AppleCare phone support...
