Makes sense. I can see Tim Cook or someone on stage in 2014 saying something like "We all love iOS on our iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. And we all love OS X on our Macs. So what if we were to combine them?" On screen, the i from iOS and the X from OS X combine into "XI".

I wouldn't doubt that at all.

I'm sure this has already been stated, but the ability to correct map data while sitting at a Mac is a lot easier for me to swallow than doing it on a 4" smartphone screen. Particularly if we're talking about fixing more than one or two problems. Sitting in front of my Mac, I could probably correct two or three times the amount of errors I could correct on my iPhone in the same amount of time.

Am I the only one finding this worrisome: "Apple has stated that is moving toward a more rapid development cycle on OS X"?

Less features - same price - shorter hardware lifespans

Things aren't the same without Jobs, Cook is just milking the cow and killing the share price.

what are you smoking? jobs was certainly a part of the mac cycle planning. and i dont feel im being "milked" at $29...the new features add value to my daily routine.

I wouldn't doubt that at all.

Yep, and I could see Tim saying, "iOS has now 'grown up' and is ready for the Mac." Then the X and the i move closer together on the slide and the i "grows up" to become "I" and then merges to form OS XI. I could totally see this happening.

Bring it on! Yet another slow and buggy system awaits you this summer! I bet they will also remove features that aren't present in iOS, such as the file system and multitasking!

My new Idea :)

Well I sure as hell hope my '09 iMac will still get the upgrade for at least another OS upgrade.

I hope so for you as well but I don't even know anymore really. They cater to people with really deep pockets that don't give a crap about spending and updating very quickly. I am a little surprised with their market growing and them not supporting pretty modern systems with 10.8, that there hasn't been a class action or DOJ check on Apple yet.

Sooner or later when/if if happens, hopefully it keeps a company in line, like a kid you need to backhand the hell out of to make him stop. These aren't 4-500 dollar machines, everything is pretty much over 1k. Apple might just find out how much fun MS had when they got probed a decade ago.

Cheerleaders might come in and talk some smack about "Apple hasn't done anything wrong" but let's put it this way; I have seen FAR worse lawsuits over more idiotic things ;) You know "rectangles"

My 2011 MBP not able to update wouldn't shock me one bit if they announced it.

(Mac) OS X has been around since, say, 2000 (Public beta)?
So, after 13 years we (OS X) get features from an OS which is only a few years old....

Since 10.6, OS X has been about "iOS-ification" of Mac OS. And rightfully so.

The Desktop OS of Apple has been the same for many years. Sure, new hardware is supported, new apps, new cloud-integrations, etc... but the way the OS works for the end user hasn't really changed since the first OS X. TBO, not really changed since the Lisa OS...
Desktop, the Finder, and Applications. All "controlled" by the keyboard and mouse.

iPhone OS (& iOS) is the first  OS to make the "way it works" change. This "portable OS" alongside the use of touch screens has changed the way we work and play with the devices.

Apple is trying to integrate the new style of devices with old style computing. What can Apple do more to the ancient desktop OS than integrating more of the modern iOS features?
Innovation is long gone with the desktop OS.

Even Microsoft has got that one. That's why they have come to the conclusion that Tablet OS and Desktop OS might as well be one, right now.

This "almost post-PC era" in which we live in right now might be a significant time in the history books of the future. The junction of classic PC's and modern i-Devices.

Hmmm, if it's really well integrated and eases use --I'd have to get my parents a newer Mac, they might really like the Siri feature. As it is, I blew my mom's mind showing her how to use the Command key last week.

This I've got to hear....the Command key?

This I've got to hear....the Command key?

Yes. Command key + P + Return = Print ---WHOA!!!!!

Sadly she's totally frightened of computers since the first one we got her, a Win desktop. I figured that if she feels she's ordering the machine to do something she wants (hence "Command" key), she'd feel better about it.

Although if she could use Siri on her iMac, and fuss at Siri as she does the iMac now, --and if Siri replied to all the fussing with wit, heh, I'd pay to watch that.;)

"So what if we combine them?". Then on screen the O from iOS and the O from OS X combines into OO.

Hopefully it will work well
Siri shouldnt have problems with a data signal on the mac and I guess background noise will be less in the home

Fingers crossed

And as for maps, I didn't think it's that bad

I love to hear those guys saying Apple will be dead and ****. Why do they come here in the first place?!

Anyways, in 2014 Mac OS X will get the 10.10 update. Isn't that a bit too repetitive? (hint: perhaps a new OS?)

How could anyone not see the benefit of an Apple mapping solution for OS X.

http://www.houdah.com/houdahGeo/screenshots.html (note the Bing maps)

How about Places in iPhoto ?

Just about any Geo application needs maps and flexible ones at that.

How about journals in iOS. If Apple's maps are server side they could be called from shared photos (assuming a internet connection)

Lot's of reason why and frankly the promise of Placebase pushpin technology hasn't been fully realized.
