First, Jobs' comment regarding OS X on iPods was not widely overlooked.

Second, why does he think they will not come out until '08? I guess it doesn't matter, since he can pull anything he wants out of his ass.

I think wi-fi on the iPod has been a safe bet ever since their partnering with Google. iPod and YouTube pretty much means the iPod will be the gold-standard portable media player for another couple years.

Ordinarily, I'd say the launch would be a lock for holdiay buying season '07. But with the iPhone not out yet in Europe and Asia, I'm not so sure.

I don't know how saying "Apple will probably release an iPod that's like the iPhone without the phone, and will probably do it by or before January 2008" is any different than the vast consensus on this site - indeed, it may be shaped by it.

Except...

1. He gets paid ($$$?) for it.
2. His job is (presumably) on the line if he's wrong (although you couldn't tell by some of these guys' track records!)

There are millions of people out there who now are familiar with the iphone, want an iphone, but are not willing to switch phone carriers. You have to think that Jobs wants to tap the oh I don't know 60 million or so verizon customers. I want an iphone really bad, but I am unwilling to go back to that nightmare of a wireless carrier now known as AT&T. An iphone minus the phone makes perfect sense. (and hopefully soon!)

I can't imagine apple will try to brave the christmas buying season without an iPod update. While I'm sure iPhone sales numbers will be impressive, they certainly won't be close to past Christmas iPod sales, and those sales will take quite a hit if there is no update to the iPod. Last year we had the 5.5g very minor update, which wasn't much, but it surely helped.

I think an OS X based widescreen, multitouch iPod is on the way, but I can't see them waiting until AFTER christmas to release it. However, releasing it now would only canibalize iPhone sales. I predict that they will release it around September, after the back to school promo and iPhone hype is over, with near-immediate availability and price points probably $50-$100 higher than the current model. However, that is just my common sense based approach. Knowing Apple, we probably won't see it until MWSF 08

It stands to reason that there will be a widescreen ipod with more features than the current models. If that does not happen then Apple's dominance of the MP3 player market will demising since not everyone who wants a mp3/mp4 portable device also wants all the bells and whistles of an iPhone, or even has the financial means to acquire an iPhone.

Ok the iPhone will probably always be the flagship model, if not the one with the largest capacity, but that does not mean that we will not eventually see variations with a reduced feature set. Maybe not a full phone minus call features, but I'd say 80% of the features, say ipod + web browser. It will need to have wifi to compete against rivals which inevitably will introduce wifi services to non-phone mp3 players.

My guess is that once iPhone v1 is fully rolled out in North America and Europe, then you will see iPhone v2 come out. Then a future next gen. Ipod, but maybe not the next immediate release, will basically be an iphone with more storage and no phone features. I'm guessing that this would happen Q2 next year, or sooner depending on actual timings of ipHone release outside NA.

my 2c worth.

I have no doubt that the next iPod will have many of the same features as the iPhone (not sure it will have wifi, though).

My big question is: will they keep them hard-drive based or will they go with NAND and have the smaller drives like the iPhone?

Since the price of flash memory is finally coming down, I'm hoping for a flash drive with at least a 40 gig hard drive and a widescreen view.

This is a great move by apple. What better way to help windows users feel more comfortable to switching to Mac OS X than by giving them a similar feel in the ipods.

wifi is a stretch of 6g ipods. it makes the iphone considerably less attractive and apple wants a big piece of the mobile market (1% my ass). not to mention that apple gets a piece of the monthly fee at&t charges.

ipods will gain wifi when the at&t contract ends. wimax will be (more) widespread and the ipod/iphone product lines will merge. the ipod as a media player is at developmental dead-end that's why we now have appleTV and iphone, they're two branches from the ipod tree. over the next 3-5 years the price of the iphone will drop to the $250-$350 price range HD based ipods are now. flash memory will hit the 40-80GBs that micro-drives are at now.

as a consumer when you walk in to an apple store in 2012 you will opt for an ipod or ipod nano (the shuffle will still exist as music only) and either enable of ignore the phone features. apple will probably, in conjunction with google, offer some sort of click-to-call VoIP service that forgoes traditional carriers and will work for 90% of the population. might be free, might be the core of a revamped .mac service. the remaining 10% (business travelers, no network coverage) can select a cell plan from any carrier that works for them.

(How much does this Gene Munster chap get paid to regurgitate this?)

Anyway, a touch screen iPod, a la the iPhone without the internet and phone features, with large storage capacity plus the addition of TV Shows and Movies to the UK iTunes Store would make the consumer side of brain very happy but the frugal side of my brain very unhappy!

I am definitely one of these people. I hate AT&T because their reception and service is horrible here in San Diego. I want the iPhone really bad, but to switch carriers is not worth it. I want to keep my Verizon. Give me an iPod with everything the iPhone has minus the phone and Apple will get my money right away.

Since they are going wide screen for movies and the like, they need to go 120 GB or more. My 80GB is full of music only so a flash based only version would be way to small storage wise!

Bring it on!

I've been holding onto my old 30 GB 3rd gen becauase I don't like the click wheel that's appeared on every generation since. An iPhone-style iPod would be beautiful!

It's a given.

The only question is when, and how much.

I first thought this holiday, but given the intense focus and attention on the iPhone I'm now less sure. It could well be MWSF/early '08 to maintain the spotlight on (lucrative) iPhone sales.

As for how much -- a lot. They'll almost certainly be high-end models to begin with. Expect $399+ for a high-capacity iPod running OS X.

i think this is a natural progression

..for iPods. The larger screen and wifi with an os make them into a functioning pda. Specially with that keyboard. to be able to use it as a stand alone computer without the chains of cell phone carriers makes it more appealing to me. Plus if they can get iChat av working on it for hotspots that would be even better.
to have all the music/email/im/os computing without the cellphone just make me shiver in anticipation. ...and then we would get them in canada.

i look at it this way. Telecomm/media companies are already bilking you for a bazillion things. You over pay for slow broadband and cell then land line and digital cable etc can easily cost you anywhere between 250-1000 dollars per month. I would like to see a way to integrate without being nickel and dimed for crappy cell plans on top of crappy cable tv plans on top of crappy tiered internet plans when one or two internet devices can do it all.

Keep Rev 1.0 simple ;

60Gig coverflow Ipod + FULL Safari over WI-FI.

Forget the rest...and I mean NOTHING ELSE.

...Though it should also act as an Apple TV media node, remote controller & keyboard like the iPhone should...Can't believe Apple are missing this trick - it's just so obvious...

I think that an OSX iPod would be awesome. Coverflow and movies would rock. I can't really get excited about the WiFi though. I don't see much point, yeah you can buy music from the device (maybe) or share music (maybe). I will be excited if it really is EVERYTHING of the iPhone without the phone, for example the Safari, so that the WiFi can be put to good use.

2008 seems a long way off for touchscreen based iPods. I can't imagine that their current iPod lines are currently selling well. The last Nano and Shuffle updates were Sept 2006, and the last full iPod updates were Oct 2005! They need updated NOW.

If I would have to guess, I'd say Jan '08 also though. If I were apple, I'd consider the iPhone an extension of the iPod product line. History shows that when they have a newer iPod out, they milk that for all it's worth through the Holiday season and then anounce updates and new product features in January or February. It's burned me a couple of times. Now I hold off buying until those Jan/Feb announcements. That's when I think we'll see new "true" video iPods.

That in itself would sell, seriously imagine the hype surrounding it. (Probably lines again, but unnecessarily and likely full of ebayers but thats another story.) That would also transform the user experience, you can use your iPod to browse the web and you can use it for your media experiences. Battery life should be good though, like have it so you can turn on/off wifi to save battery life, dim brightness, ect. to save battery. That would be an awesome product. I was playing with the Nokia N800 and it's a great idea and innovative product, fun to play with, but lacks the capacity to hold much media. I'd buy it though, but I'm not going to b/c I'm hoping Apple's new iPod will be similar. I'm absolutely sure that Apple has had their eye on this concept and hopefully the 6G will be it, at a similar price point to the N800, the market and users will be ready for the Apple revolution once again, and there's not many negatives one can point out for a product like this unlike the iPhone.

hey guys, dont forget, apple isnt stupid... they arent going to release an iPhone w/o the phone capabilities, slap on a hard drive, and then call it an iPod. That so stupid marketing wise that they would lose all focus on the iPhone. Plus, Jobs knows best, give you mac os x, but there will be wifi, but not for ichat or safari, but for new 3rd party apps (w/sdk) and of course he will introduce wireless downloads via itunes at macworld. mark those words. In the mean time, i :apple:my iPhone...

I can't imagine them including WiFi and not putting Safari on there, too. Maybe they would, but it would be pretty surprising to me.

okay, my guesses...

We'll see the next gen iPod with a bunch of pda-like apps that will appear on the iPhone as well. I think that :apple: could use the next gen iPods as a testbed for a fully-sandboxed open media/pda platform that could then move into the iPhone 2.0.

I am willing to bet that there is a good chance at a wifi iPod to zuck out zune's oxygen, but we wont see an iPod with wifi until the end of the ATT contract unless they are able to disable all VOIP capability. I think this model would come in at the low end of the iPhone to prevent canabalization.

One last thing, bluetooth (or wifi?) connectivity between the iPod and the iPhone allowing the iPod to serve as a sorta external drive or server. Sounds weird, but with the rumored filesystem for the iPhone, even 8 GB is gonna seem small and I could use an extra 80 GB or so that I could keep out of the way in my backpack, purse or briefcase.

I can see a pretty nice price point for these new iPods.

299 to 399 for the touch screen iPod running OS X

499 to 599 for a Phone running OS X

I don't see them raising the price on the ipod. They'll stick to the 249 and 349. Apple doesnt like to raise the price on things. Nevertheless, 249 or 299; Im sure it will be worth it.
