Call it glib, but you and I are from two fundamentally different and incompatible demographics.

Your hardware needs would not suit me, and I doubt mine would suit you.

Well that's quite a volte-face from your original blanket statement. I'm glad that we have some clarification.

I think 4K on a 21.5" screen is absurd, but I would never use a screen that small on a desktop unless it was as a palette monitor, nor would I use an iMac.

Is that clear enough for you? You are using the Royal "we", I presume.

It is clearly NOT absurd.
It is basically 1080p. If you think 1080p on 21.5" is absurd... then that is something else.
You do NOT run 4k panels at their native resolution but by default at x2. So a 4k iMac... is basically a 1080p iMac that just so happens to be a LOT sharper... and that also gives you the option to make UI elements smaller OR bigger... without introducing too much fuzziness. Now try running a 1080p panel at a non-native resolution.

Definitely not absurd. The opposite of absurd, in fact. Sitting there and going "bah, I can't see a difference, so that means nobody can see a difference, so it's all a scam I tell you!" is just, well, super-lame. While it's unfortunate that you have vision problems that prevent you from being able to appreciate HDPI displays, try to understand that lots of other people don't.

I'll stand by my assertion, since it doesn't exist yet, it's a moot point.

I can see a difference, color rendition on iMacs is inadequate and that is my primary concern on a monitor.

Perfect timing... I was just about to give in and buy the Dell 24" 4K monitor. 27" is too big. I tried it and keeping track of that much real estate is difficult, my eyes got tired, and I kept having to turn my head to scan the whole thing. But, once you go retina, there is no turning back. I am trying to do all my work on a 13" rMBP since my 24" Cinema display went out which is crazy and impacting my productivity. Common' Apple. You gotta time these things better. A replacement needs to be out by the time it expires from use. I would prefer 24", but I will settle for 21". But nothing retina between the 15" rMBP and the 27" retina iMac is nuts.

Is there anyone that complains about the GPU that does NOT play video games on their computer?

El Capitan will give bigger role for GPUs. Even then all current models are good enough for general use like web browsing, writing e-mails or documents, watching videos, listening music.. but if you use Professional video or photo editing apps, better GPU can give a nice boost.

Even for casual gaming all current GPUs are fine. I played Civ IV with my old 2010 Late Macbook air without any problem.. CIV V worked also, but with lower settings. Serious gaming on the other hand... there's not HW for real gamers existing from Apple. All GPU's are either integrated, mobile or FirePro specialized GPUs. There's no true gaming machine available - except if you make a hackintosh.
