NB: in my case I tried initiating through Finder as above, by running the Screen Sharing app and trying to connect by name there, and from the terminal with open vnc://<hostname>.local

Same failure every time. Which is to be expected really; all Finder is bringing to the party is bonjour service discovery, and that's working just fine.

InterMac Networking seems to be a mess in Lion

Like most of the other posters, I cannot get either of my Lionised Macs to connect to each other. I have tried changing various settings in file sharing, re-entering connection user name and password, changing firewall settings both on my Macs, Virus Barrier software and router, all with no luck. Interesting, a Mac cannot see any files saved by another Mac on a Time Capsule either, so I think it is a file ownership issue. The only way I can currently move files is to use Dropbox. Even Airdrop is not appearing on my iMac but is on my MacBook. You just know if you phone up the dingleberries at Apple, all they will tell you is to do a clean install of Lion, forgetting that you in theory have to install Snow Leopard first (and I know there is a way round that but there is not supposed to be).

You don't have to install snow leopard first. I just did a fresh install of lion from usb stick and it worked just fine. It looks like doing a fresh install from the recovery partition would normally work too but the downloads kept crapping out on me.

Didn't solve the problem though. :) Well, it *half* solved it - I can do screen sharing now, but still no file sharing. Tried the "using AppleID" option too, but no dice. I'll probably freshly-install the other mac too later.

Its wonky for me too.

I used VNC to connect to my Mac from work to home. I even did this to remotely install Lion. After Lion was on I couldnt use VNC really. I could see the screen at first, but it would prompt for my password. I couldnt even type using UltraVNC to connect in. Eventually it started letting me type so I could type my password and log in.

After about an hour I got disconnected from VNC. From that point I could no longer connect to my machine at home. I checked and screen sharing still is enabled as well as I've had my firewall / router setup for this a while back.

I enabled screen sharing in the sharing preferences and was able to connect using a free vnc app on my iPhone only tried over my local network though. I also set a password to control the mac under "computer settings" button.

My sister was logged in to her user account. When I connected, I was shown the login screen. I logged in to my user account and she was able to continue using the iMac.

finally

I did manage to connect evetually, but its still more miss than hit. I goto the finder then use drop down menu under go and use the connect to server. I use the ip address vnc://ec (ip number) then it seems to connect somewtimes after asking if I want virtual display. I did go back to mac mini and made sure that I am listed as an authorized user . Its still weird as the name and password I use under the connect to server option is exatcly the same as when I try using share screen in finder under mac mini. Hope they make is a lot easier soon. Also I entered my apple id on both computers in system pref under users but that does not want to cnnect either even though I am fully paid up mobileme.
Erghhh, hope this helps someone.

Initiating it through the Screen Sharing option in Finder after selecting the Mini found under the Shared section. Again, never had any problems in SL and after rolling back both machines to SL last night, everything is once again working perfectly. I'll wait until Apple puts out an update or two for Lion and give it a go again at that time--no biggie, just bummed I spent the better part of a full day installing Lion, trying to troubleshoot and finally rolling back to SL.

well. something got messed up on your end. I am able to log in to my finder with no problem....no notice on the mini side, it works exactly the same as SL.

Solution

I had the same problems until I found out you just use remote management on the computer that you want to connect to...instead of screen sharing. Once you set it up and turn on back to my Mac it all just works without any prompt to request sharing. Settings sharing remote management NOT screen sharing. Why don't they make this info available on support site? You do have to have a password if you leave password blank it doesnt seem to work. NO you do not need to purchase remote desktop management unless you want to see and administer all the computers on your network simultaneously. Make sure to either check all users or add your user name to the Users section of each computer that you want to connect to and choose to allow user to be administrator. The virtual screen does work but it is hit and miss for some reason unknown.

I've been unable to connect to my MacMini from my Air, after a load of hunting around on the net I've found a solution... In Sharing, File Sharing turn off AFP... then try..

For some bizarre reason it now works!

Hope this helps..

Hmmmm I haven't had any of these problems. My Mac Mini and my MacBook Pro have both been clean installed to Lion. I connect to the Mini the same way I always have, pressing Command+K while in Finder and entering vnc://ipaddressofmini then I press Connect. Works just like it did in SL. I haven't had any trouble. My Mini is assigned the same address via DHCP so there's no problem remembering the address.

I didnt even know there was some Virtual Desktop option. I'll go try it out and report back.

this worked for me !

I had the same problem on several macs upgraded to Lion and ARD 3.5.1, impossible to take control.

I solved it on all the macs by unchecking remote management in the sharing pref pane, then checking on the screen sharing option and then rechecking on the remote management.

Of course for the couples of macs that are off site, it will have to wait until i get there..

Solved!

My two macs that would not screen share now can. The problem was those macs had no password for the user accounts (stupid, I know). Solved my inability to file share previously by turning off AFP and turning on SMB. Also switched them all to Remote Management instead of Screen Sharing but not sure if that mattered.

However, no matter what I do file sharing and screen sharing DO NOT work by using mobile me ID. Paid member with newest Airport Extreme so Back to My Mac SHOULD be working.

UPDATE:had to remove any Home folder from being shared and now AFP works again. Screen sharing alone works too and don't have to have Remote Management on!

I want to screen and file share via Apple ID which is a new feature in Lion. It simply won't work. Says invalid username and password even though the right credentials are being used. I am pretty sure I'm setting it up right although I cannot find any Apple documentation re setup process.

Uh, just got stuck in some kind of screen sharing loop here. I connected to my own machine via vnc just for fun...made it unusable...I recommend you not to do this! :D

Seriously, guys: Screen Sharing works great for me.

Make sure you have activated Screen Sharing in the "Sharing" preference pane and that you've ticked that VNC-Option and set a password.

Also make sure, your router forwards the VNC port (5900) to your target machine.

On the other Mac open Safari, enter vnc://ip.of.target.computer and press enter. Enter user and password.

That works great for me. I have also set up an dyndns-account which allows me to access my machine from anywhere in the world as its logging the changes of my external ip.

lsightly off subject

Does anyone know how to change the name that is my user name in the screen sharing screen. I want to change it so that when I click on screen sharing the screen does not put my user name but the name I use on the mac I am trying to use. Im sure this must be easy deleting plist or something?
Everytime i call up the screen sharing window it puts my user name in the name box and i want it to be a new name so I don't have to change it each time.

I have been working with Screen Sharing using Lion on a Mac Mini and connecting using RealVNC on Windows 7. I have had successful sessions but it is flaky. I found I have to modify VNC Viewer - Options to uncheck Auto Encoding then select RAW and Colour Level = Full (all available colours) for it to even connect.

Often the main screen paints with user icons to pick local or another user session but selecting the main local session often does nothing and the screen just freezes. I experienced the same problems using TightVNC on the PC and VNC on my iPad.

It seemed to get worse after the recent iTunes update. I disabled AFP in file sharing as suggested above and it seemed to start working better, but not 100%. Thanks for other's input.

Fixed one - need to work on other

I just "fixed" one of my systems - MacBook Pro with Lion installed - as not able to see the Screen Sharing button from a Snow Leopard machine - on the Lion machine I unchecked Remote Management in the Sharing Preference Pane - then checked Screen Sharing and selected All Users - then checked the Remote Management again (which unchecked the Screen Sharing) but it worked.

Now to try it on the Mac Mini - which apparently also needs Timbuktu and LogMeIn updated - as neither of those are working correctly at the moment either.

Update - that also fixed the Mac Mini.

Screen sharing mac OS 10.7.3

To connect any computer with a vnc viewer such as iPad, iPhone, windows or mac computers with this vnc viewer app. Here is the procedure for mac osx 10.7.3 lion. Open system preferences, click on sharing. Next, turn on screen sharing and then click "computer setting", check the "vnc viewer may control screen with password", enter your a pass word. Next you have to go into your "user/guest" in system preferences and click on "guest user" on the left hand side and check the "allow guest log into this computer" and "allow guest to connect shared folders". Then go to your computer with the vnc viewer and type in the ip address of the Mac computer that you want to log into. To find the ip address needed for the vnc viewer, you can find this ip address in the systems preference, open sharing and then click on screen sharing and you will see the message that tells you the ip address that the VNC viewer will need. Also you will have to enter a password in the vnc viewer software. good luck
