Apple's OS X Lion Up to Date program which allows qualifying customers to get a free copy of Lion is now active. Customers who purchased a Mac after June 6th can receive a free redemption code for OS X Lion from the Mac App Store.

The program was activated yesterday, but there had been reports that the activation server was having issues resulting in serial numbers being initially rejected.

Requests must be sent in prior to August 19th or 30 days after the purchase of your Mac, whichever is later.

My serial number was rejected, had to input a form and attach a jpg of the invoice.

Once I'm successful, will my app account allow me to update my other Macs for free?

It should. Once you have Lion you can install it on any machine that has the same apple id.

worked fine for me. took awhile to download but that was my connection. lion is working fine. i posted this on my blog yesterday

Why June 6? that date seems rather arbitrary to me. 44 days before release doesn't seem to have much significance.

News hot off the presses!

Haha, imagine the steaming anger if Apple had told us that -- no, the current Mac generations would unlike previous generations not be upgraded to a new OS X version despite it being out. :D

That was the date it was announced.

I was happily surprised to quickly get my redemption code right away and start downloading lion. The whole process was very smooth.

Worked flawlessly for me, just take your time and make sure all the details are correct.

My serial number was initially rejected throughout most of the day early yesterday but later in the afternoon I tried again after multiple earlier tries and it was accepted. Now running Lion successfully.

My serial number was accepted and then I was able to download it to the rest of my Macs.

I received the Free upgrade

I had no problems with the free upgrade. The process was very easy and painless.

Still not working

I tried all day yesterday, and just tried again this morning, and still doesn't work. I submitted the web form yesterday morning (which on the apple web site says should be looked at in 24 hours) and still don't have a code yet.

I received my iMac on May 28th- missed out on this offer by ten days; but I knew this when I bought my iMac (by that point the Lion public demo date was known).

Oh well, once I clone my drive, I'll update to Lion.:)

Now I feel like an idiot, mine didn't work yesterday and I just bought Lion. Oh well, that's $29 wasted for being impatient.

Worked great both times

Entered my receipt info, got the activation code and redeemed it no problems for my new MBP. I was even able to use it for installation on my 2 year old iMac under the Purchased section of the Mac App Store.

Same here! I sent an email to costumer support and waiting for a reply. I hope we will get refunded. I bought my MBP on 3rd, but wasn't register for Applecare until 9th and didn't know for sure I was eligible or not.

I sent one too, I bought my MacBook Pro the 14th of this month so it's brand new. I even added a link to this article so they know what issues I'm talking about, I hope they don't mind!

Please let me know if you get a reply :) I told them that due them to cancel it, refund my account and with those extra pounds will get other apps from them :p

Ah Crap, I bought Lion yesterday only to find out this today.

Can I somehow get a refund? lol

EDIT
Just got off the phone with Apple Canada. They said they'll relay my request to the iTunes department but there's no guarantee they will refund me, it just depends on them.
