I'm trying to redeem a free lion update from Canada for an imac purchased June 10.

Does anyone know how you do this?

When I try to do it via www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate and go to the online apple store, and enter my details, it says that my state is invalid, presumably because I'm putting in a Canadian province, not a US state.

Has anyone in Canada successfully used this link? Is there another link that I'm missing?

If so, what do you have to enter?

Thanks

Maybe you could write to Customer Service and request a refund?

Yeah I guess I'll try that, thanks for the suggestion!

I ran into the same problem yesterday, and had to spend 45 mins with Apple cost support and I was told I was going to get my 30 refunded. The only thing is that it would take 24 to 48hrs to show up. So try and see

If you bought it after June 6, they will give you a free upgrade... You just have to wait for them to get the upgrade claim working...

I received my iMac on May 28th- missed out on this offer by ten days; but I knew this when I bought my iMac (by that point the Lion public demo date was known).

Oh well, once I clone my drive, I'll update to Lion.:)

Try your serial anyway, it may work for you as it did for me. :)

^

Same here. Serial number not recognised even thou I bought my MBP on 10 June 11.

Apple Store couldn't help either as they have no control over the Up-to-date program. Had to fill out a proof of purchase form which was a right pain as I don't know how long it will take for them to come back.

Seems a bit poor that over 24 hours in this issue still hasn't been resolved. I guess it's not Apple's priority as we are not paying £20.99 for it.

I had to use the second method where you had to upload the proof of purchase, how long do you think before I get the code?

Several days. The manual check takes a lot of time, and they have probably 1000000 requests and around 2000 employees who check the submitted details.

After 24+ hours i still wait for my Lion download code. In the meantime i will download Xcode 4.1, which is now a free download in the Mac App Store. Xcode v3.x.x was part of the Snow Leopard Installation DVD.

My serial number was rejected, had to input a form and attach a jpg of the invoice.

Once I'm successful, will my app account allow me to update my other Macs for free?

Same here, caled Apple and they told me they had problems with one of their servers. Still waiting on a reply of the filled in form with the jpg.

Haha, got my first reply form Apple! They told me they couldn't understand me when I wrote in Swedish! I replied back in English so now I'll have to wait and see :p

Sorry for the double post but I wanted to update, I just got an email back from Apple and they have refunded me for Lion because I qualified for the up-to-date program! I'll have the money back in five to seven days.

Very nice gesture of them, just another reason why I love Apple :apple:

Will do! Make sure to post yours reply as well!
Part of their reply email:

I understand that you purchased OS X Lion, but were actually eligible for the Up-To-Date program. Apple recognizes that accidents happen, and I'll be happy to help you with this.

After reviewing the circumstances of your case, we determined that issuing you a refund for your unintentional purchase of "OS X Lion" is an appropriate exception to the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions, which state that all sales are final. You will see a store credit of 20.99 GBP in five to seven business days. You may need to sign out of the iTunes Store and then sign back in before you see the credit in your account.

The iTunes Store provides a warning message that asks if you are sure that you want to buy an item. This warning can be turned off. If you would like to make sure that this warning is on, you can reset the warnings in the iTunes Store by following the instructions in this article:

Resetting iTunes Store warnings

I hope this information has been helpful. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you further. Thanks for contacting iTunes, and have a wonderful day!

Personally I find it really nice of them as it was clearly users error and they weren't obligated to refund me. I guess this adds to the reasons I went with Apple instead with Dell this time ;)

Oh I post my reply and then saw this post! :) Great! They will refund them in your credit card or iTunes account? They will for iTunes account -afterall I used iTune cards to get Lion in the first place.

FINALLY!!! Just tried the short form to claim my update again (for what feels like the billionth time...) and it worked!!!! Time to get my Lion :)

Ah Crap, I bought Lion yesterday only to find out this today.

Can I somehow get a refund? lol

EDIT
Just got off the phone with Apple Canada. They said they'll relay my request to the iTunes department but there's no guarantee they will refund me, it just depends on them.

Me and Fishmoose had they same problem! We both got positive replies from Apple so my guess you will get a refund as well :)

Credit card, I bought it with my credit card so that makes sense. I'll probably be spending it on things in the store anyway :D

Here's the email I got:

Dear Daniel,

Thank you for your reply in english. I understand that you have been charged for the purchase of Mac OS X Lion, when you qualify for a free upgrade. My name is Brad and I want to say that I know how concerning it is when you have to get in touch with customer service, as it can sometimes be very time consuming. I am glad that you did take the time to contact the iTunes Store, to get this issue personally reviewed.

After reviewing your case, we determined that issuing a refund for the unintentional purchase of Mac OS X Lion is an appropriate exception to the App Store Terms and Conditions, which state that all sales are final. In five to seven business days, a credit of 229.00 SEK should post to the credit card that appears on your receipt.

Thank you for contacting the iTunes Store, Daniel. Apple appreciates your support. Please feel free to reply to this email if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Oh well.. just bought new iMac 21.5" two weeks ago. But I guess no free upgrade for users outside US/Canada (I'm from South East Asia region) :(

Don't worry! Just make a UK or any other country with App Store account and download it from there! I live in Cyprus and I simply use a UK store account! :)

Will do! First time I ever contacted Apple for support in any matter, couldn't be happier with the service!

I'll add a few bucks and buy Civilization IV for my MacBook Pro :)

IV? Not Civilisation V? It has 20% off in celebration of Lion release!
