Anyone notice that iMessage seems to be more reliable and snappy in Mavericks? Also, what's the deal with 'automatic' iMessage colour schemes? It turned my girlfriend's messages pink with it turned on, what does it base the colours on?

Bases the colors on gender from the sounds of it lol :D

This is a rather silly metric... especially considering that it is "Free" and shows up under Updates in the App Store.

I installed Mavericks on my MBA to test it before installing it on my iMac which I use day-to-day. Whoopity-do, that's a 50% adoption rate here

Tron 2.0

Updated my 2009 MBP (still going strong) last night in about 1 hr. Pretty inspiring that most of Apple software is free (w/ the exception of desktop iWork). Reminds me of the Tron movie remake. With pretty amazing, free software, I'll gladly pay a higher price for their hardware. Not sure if this would've happened under Steve's reign, but this is an amazing brand loyalty move on Apple's part and I think it'll pay off big time. Bravo! :apple:

The only thing that doesn't work right now is iBooks. It transferred all my books and pdfs from iTunes first, and crashes every time I try to open it. Boo for that, but not a big deal right now.

So far I was able to download the update for one of my macs, earlier yesterday actually (3:00pm ET). But of the other macs still getting a error message. I believe that good for apple, many people downloading the product.

After upgrading to iOS 7, I'm hesitant to install a new OS on any old device. Would mavericks cripple my 2008 Macbook? It was sold with Leopard installed :/

Generally Mavericks is as fast or faster than Mountain Lion.

Free has a way of driving adoption and so does a "one-click" install (well, two clicks to check for updates and another to choose the update and then you have to click through a few dialogs, but still... It's easier than opening a can of soda, e.g.)

Would love to but as a DJ, have to hold until Serato is rock solid on it.

Waiting til January. Sigh.

Yeah, I'm in the middle of a project and there's no way I'll even start to think about updating my desktop until that's done... If just one thing breaks in my toolset it isn't worth it. I'm taking a small risk even updating my laptop since it would have to do if my main machine went down.

Apple's unified design was great (even if it was the wrong design). Now I have to explain to every older person in my family that there are TWO types of looks for the apps they use every day as they bounce around from their iOS devices to their Macs.

Actually, I think they'll discover perfectly fine on their own that they look different. :D

The issue is whether it affects usability. Apple realizes that desktop (or laptop) computers and touchscreens are two different beasts and tailors their apps for each. I think it's appropriate to design a different interface for each; otherwise, we'll end up with Windows 8-type complaints. Why they decided to leave the bumpy interface in OS X Reminders is beyond me, but at least it's rather subtle and not all that different from the flat iOS version (e.g.,similar colors).

Just curious here and thinking past the free fireworks... for fun of course. Why is Mavericks free? What's the plan? I don't believe in free candies from strangers :D

- Is it simply becasue Apple wants to bring as many users to 10.9 and cut support on previous versions to save money?

- Is there a special Kool-Aid in 10.9 that will enable certain agencies to collect our info? :D

- Was Elvis involved in this? :p

Few minor changes that are ok ... and one that annoys the crap out of me. They removed the memory monitoring (dock) on activity monitor. I used to use it to see if I had too many apps running and would close a few things down.

Additionally, looking at the activity monitor I can no longer see which apps are using what amount of memory. Everything is listed as zero. WTF.

Is it possible to get the old version of Notes back?
I don't like that change and I don't like how they changed the Top Sites on Safari.

I was excited for a bit when he said it was a free upgrade for Lion users, but then I looked it up and saw my 2.4GHz Blackbook isn't compatible. I wasn't expecting the update anyway, I was just surprised when he said that during the presentation.....gave me a brief moment of hope.

Finally an upgrade path.

I was not at all happy with Lion, Mountain Lion was a slight improvement but ultimately I stayed with Snow Leopard as it was the most reliable system. Mavericks looks like Apple have finally got the message that a computer is not the same as a tablet/phone.

It looks like Mavericks might just be what I have been waiting for. Still a few stupid things like versions but at least most of them can be turned off so I will be able to use new apps that require a newer os version than SL.

Impressive for sure. I have already moved my iMac and MBP over to it. Only issue so far is two finger swipe in Safari does not seem to be working for me (at least on my iMac with Magic Trackpad)...

Check your settings (System Preferences -> Trackpad -> More Gestures) and make sure 'swipe between pages' is on. When I installed the first GM, that got turned off for some reason.

Can't remember there was a new OS that was so 'non visible', maybe because of that it was a free upgrade.

The only thing I noticed is that they decided to kill the functionality of Safari Top Sites and instead gave us a completely useless sidebar, that you can't seem to hide...

Download problems

Have tried more than 10 times to download/install, each time interrupted after some time, download starts at 0 each time. Poorly designed download function, should auto resume download until finished.

I'm still reading John Siracusa's review. About a quarter of the way through and he hasnt thrown any grenades. I'll probably adopt sooner than later. I still plan to finish it before I do, but it's 24 pages so it might be a while.

I've only had one issue, so far: Time Machine said it did not have the required 1.2TB of space on the drive....I have 2.0TB of music, movies, photos, etc....but I don't think I added 1.2TB after I upgraded to Mavericks!! I think I will delete the Time Machine plist when I get home and see if Time Machine comes down to earth...
