Released right after the supposed October 15 event?

Or any day in between or after.

They don't need an event to release stuff, as the updated iMacs showed. They can and will just do it. Especially when it already had its day in the press. Mavericks and the new Mac Pro and even new notebooks could all be 'silent' releases.

OOh! I can't wait till Mavericks. Will work on my iMac but I MUST upgrade the ram. I'm going for 6 gb of ram.:D

I went from 4 to 6GB on my 2007 24" Alum iMac a while back, and it made a big difference. Being old style RAM it was not so cheap though.

I'll probably ask some of the guys at the Apple Store to see what they think before I upgrade. Cause last time I did a clean install was last year with Lion and I had to redo my entire iPhoto gallery and albums by transferring the photos that were saved on Photo Stream. Suffice to say I got them all back....but it wasn't fun.

I just need a simpler and faster way to do it.

He was right. Save the contents of your desktop, documents, pictures, movies and music to a hard drive. You may want to screen shot any email server info that isn't the basic gmail, aol. Also older keychain items (or if you are using something like 1password make sure they are in there). Same with serials for non MAS apps.

Wipe and install the OS, set up user. Best if you use the same user name as before in cause of permissions on any folders etc. From your harddrive just bring your iPhoto library 'file' over to the new pictures folder. Same with your iTunes folder. iMovie etc folders as well. Then bring over what documents you want.

I do this and it's a great way to clean up stuff that I don't need anymore. With mavericks I'll likely tag as I go along on some stuff to make it easier.

----------

It's funny how people complain about paying $19.99 for ML. Guess they weren't around to pay $129 for Leopard

And waiting up to 3 years for a major update.

Even at $29 yearly it's still less than before. and yet anything more than free is too much. Geesh

----------

So why are people here reformatting there drive before installing ?
Will it run better as a clean I stall over updating on top of of your old OS

It could.

But many folks just do it as a way to 'spring clean' old bits of crap that might be in their systems.

----------

Does that mean developers get Mavericks for free?

No. Developers may not be asked to pay $19-29 when this thing goes public but they had to pay $99 to get access to the software in 'beta' so it was not free.

Now, given that iWork is free on iCloud, my hunch is that like with iOS, iWork will be free on OS X with the purchase of new hardware for OS X (otherwise people would just use the web-app instead of downloading the client-side version). iLife? Free with purchase of new hardware for OS X.
Apple CEO Tim Cook:
"We think that iWork is a really key advantage for our customers productivity, and iPhoto and iMovie are great for their creativity." "Almost all of our customers want these apps." "No other platform has apps like these. We think all iOS devices are made better if they have these apps."

Every word is also true when it comes to OS X. Following this reasoning, iWork must also come free with new Macs. Otherwise Apple customers would miss a really key advantage of the platform and all OS X devices would be made worse for not having these apps. You do not ship the OS without a browser, why do you want to ship it without an text processing app?

The only explanation iWork wasn't included in the system when iLife was, is that Apple couldn't alienate Microsoft back then. Much less people would buy Microsoft Office for Mac if a free office suite was already included with the system. Therefore Microsoft would eventually stop the development of Office for Mac completely and Apple would loose all the customers who think Office is essential.

So the question now is: How many of these Office-only people are still out there?

I shouldn't have downloaded this. I've found a bug in the finder already. I was looking at a folder containing the pictures I took this summer, and I was deleting some pictures. When I delete a picture it deletes the file from the list, but the file still shows up on the cover flow view. When that happens after I select a different picture, it shows the wrong thumbnail in cover flow view.

I want to go back. I'd have to do a clean install correct? Man! How can I save my applications. Can I just transfer them to a hard drive, and transfer them back? Would the settings within the program also stay?

Have you sent Apple feedback on this issue?

----------

For a 0 release, Mavericks seems to be pretty solid. I've been trying to find some bugs but none so far. The only thing I really noticed was in iMessage. When you send a message that requires two lines, it won't adjust or align correctly like it did in ML. It will only adjust when the "Delivered" indicator shows up. It's nothing serious but it's kind of annoyance to see your message keep shifting when the delivered receipt appears.

Also, the fonts for items on the desktop seems to be bolded like what was found in iOS 7. So far can't see a way to disable or revert back to ML font.

I'm not sure what is causing this but I'll wait after a restarts but every so often, the CPU usage will spike and you will notice it when you're doing something. I thought it was Spotlight doing it's thing but it wasn't.

Again, so far so good. Nothing that would make me regret upgrading to to Mavericks but performance could definitely use a tweak but that is expected and will come with later OS upgrades.

Please remember to send Apple your feedback.

I have 10.6.?? on my 2007-ish macbook. I shouldnt have problems doing a clean install when this gets released right?

A friend commented in passing a while back that you couldnt jump that many OS's...but I have no real reason to believe them...

Looks good. *rolls up sleeves*

Now, lets see that Apple event. Or is Apple gonna 'quietly' push this out like they did the new iMac's?

You can't update to Mavericks.

This is great advice as I do this as well with a new OS X major release. One thing I do further is put all by users accounts on seperate drives from the OS. Reinstall OS and then bring over the user accounts data as they are already stored off separate from the OS. Essentially recreate the users from the old user accounts.

Hardware requirements for 10.9: http://osxdaily.com/2013/06/11/os-x-mavericks-system-requirements/

Only 2007 MacBook Pro hardware can be used for 10.9, 2007 15" and 17" MacBook Pro.

Any idea why my MacBook Air runs so hot under Mavericks? With ML i had temps around 50°C but under MV it's suddenly ~80°C. Under the same load. I just don't get it.

Might be caused by spotlight reindexing. Check the activity window and find out which processes are running busy.

Try resetting dmc and pram, then boot into SU and run fsck

And here is my advice. Never do a clean install. Except your system has a major problem that can't be fixed otherwise. And even then try to update it first and see if that might fix your problem already. Do not trick yourself in believing a clean install would gain you anything. You are just losing data. Only when you buy new hardware it is time to decide if you wan't to try a fresh start or migrate as much settings as possible. And you will lose some anyway.

This advice only holds true for OS X, if you are running Windows. Always do a clean install. Do not wait for a new major version to be released. Make a clean install of the same version every couple of years. Your system is becoming slower and slower just by using it. Every time a program is installed or uninstalled something keeps sticking in the registry. Even if a program is not running, just for being installed or having been installed, slows your system down.

Whenever you think your Windows PC is too slow now and it is time to buy a new one, try a clean install first. Whenever you're tempted to write a blogpost about, how much faster on the same hardware a new Windows version is, make sure you are comparing two clean installed systems.

And because of all of this: Never buy a Windows PC and Never treat your Mac as if he is a dumb PC.

........................ and .............................. Never say NEVER ! :D

They never release pricing info the first day they announce it. They haven't even announced the release date yet. They first announce the new OS X and iOS versions at WWDC, then have events for both later in the year where they announce release date and pricing.

There will be another Apple event sometime this month, at which point they'll announce the release date and pricing information for Mavericks.

In the past the price and free upgrades were announced more than a month before release. At this point we're likely less than a month away. There probably won't be an event announcing a release date, there's a good chance it will be released at the next event or just days later, making a free upgrade period pointless. I don't think it's a done deal, but free is more likely than it ever has been in the past.

Total days from GM to release date of Mountain Lion last year was 16 days. The announcement for availability and pricing was made the day before release on July 24th. ML was released July 25th.

The exact release date wasn't announced until the day before, but pricing was announced June 11, about six weeks before release, along with free upgrades for purchases after that date.

And I don't think "entitlement" has anything to do with it, it's arguably better for Apple to make it free. iOS upgrades are already free and it gets adopted extremely quickly, I don't see how doing the same for OSX would be a bad thing.

I heard the iOS 7 GM was the same as the official released version. I guess that will be the same for this OS X Mavericks GM as well? Think I might as well reinstall from now. Have we ever had a GM which had a different hash than the official released version?
