My guess is that the designs for game center etc are simply not complete, and will be changed either a little before release, or in an early update.

There's a truck next to Dropbox. Has Apple finally given us a new version of Font/DA Mover?

:D

I assume all Mac products will display a truck there, to remind us of their status in this post-pc era!

Support for 2007 is indeed pretty cool! My 2008 15" MBP may have purpose yet ... may knowingly go past SL yet. Seems that's pretty much just 64-bit requirement still? IIRC there were things like black MacBooks that were made to run ML when they weren't officially included, bet they still can too.

Hopefully the remaining skeuomorphism takes a hike between now and release - what of Address Book?

Despite quite a bit of disappoint over their other announcements, this OSX update is brilliant... except the name of course. ;)

Looks like a worthwhile upgrade despite the ... name.

I agree with xVeinx that there's still time to stamp out all the skeuomorphism before release. But personally I have no problem with the linen background. Hey ho.

The power improvements look great. The Skeuomorphism is neither here nor there. Most of all we need legacy support for older machines, they should be able to go back further than 2007. Dumping support for older hardware is very ungreen of Apple.

More importantly I want to see legacy software support. I would upgrade all of our old hardware if Apple would support the old software that runs on those old machines to run on the new OS. We need legacy support to access our data. The past doesn't disappear just because Apple brings out a new OS. Legacy support into the future is critical. Support for Classic/68K/PPC would bring a lot of users of old hardware up to the new hardware and OS.

The other thing is Apple should just merge OSX and iOS. We should be able to run our apps and use our data no matter what hardware it is.

Best release so far in terms of performance, It's very speedy, noticeable improvement over Mountain Lion =).

Linen was weird in 2005 when it appeared on the settings panes of Dashboard widgets.

It remains weird 8 years later. Good riddance.

Looking forward to seeing iOS 7 (only 7 months old!) get refined, and then OS X can take on a similar modern look.

(I like the new Dock. But they should use it on the bottom edge too: less of a space hog. And the Dock should be on the left by default anyway! Keeps it out of the way of scrollbars, AND doesn't constrain the vertical size of scrolling windows.)

General question: is it a good idea to use the current beta as the main OS on a machine? And is it possible to upgrade it to next dev. previews and finally to the retail version this fall?

Why is the OS name plural anyway? OS X releases have always had singular names... Tiger, Panther, Lion, Leopard, etc... now... Mavericks?

OS X Maverick would have sounded nicer.

Also, moving from felines to livestock? Kind of a downgrade I think...

Next up: --Edsel !

Nope, that's just a truck backing up to Dropbox so it can be loaded with information in Dropbox which will then get delivered to the NSA. ;-)
