You don't need a trackpad for the gestures. I use a mouse too...the new Apple one with multitouch.

So they expect you to buy/use their brand mouse? Figures.

The Magic Mouse works great with the gestures and I no longer have pain in my wrists as a bonus. The poor ergonomics of traditional mice that require you to grip the mouse and hold your hand in a gripping motion is very bad for your wrists after prolonged use.

I use a gel pad with a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical (best mouse ever made, IMO). I bought them for all my Macs including the MBP (think they've been replaced by newer/crappier models, but I could still order a half dozen last year). It beats a trackpad any day of the week, IMO. And no I don't "grip" it. I lightly hold touch it at the contact points. No carpal tunnel. The gel pad makes a huge difference as it supports your wrist so you don't have to.

In any case, the sign of a bad OS is one that forces you to use ONE method to get around efficiently. I shouldn't and don't want to have to reach for either the mouse or keyboard when using one or the other. I expect both to have efficient methods of doing things. And I can't think of anything worse than forcing gestures on people that don't want to use Magic Mice or trackpads. A traditional mouse and keyboard should be sufficient to get around in an OS or it's the OS that is deficient. Gestures should supplement, not replace traditional GUI features. Some like the three finger scroll are nice. Others I never use. Some older Macs don't even support gestures. But then neither does Apple support older Macs these days, it seems. You are suppose to buy a new computer every year now I think.

No, no , no. What Apple will do is buy Facebook. Tim Cook would move to COO and Mark Z would focus on products as the 21 st century heir to Steve Jobs. Together Apple-Facebook will be unbeatable. Mark Z is the new Steve Jobs ( whether starting in a garage or dorm room). Apple know this as Tim Cook is not a creative person - he is a dour, intelligent businessman. Apple need more than Ive who is full of self importance and cant do what Mark Z can.

That's what the world needs. Apple owning Facebook. Let's get the hackers and malware people to concentrate even more on Apple in the future by having them own/run giant social networking sites. The day Apple starts getting a lot of malware is the day OSX becomes pointless to me as that is the ONLY thing (well that and Logic Pro) that keeps me coming back at this point after the way they MUTILATED OSX with Lion.

I hope that was sarcasm, because as reality it is a nightmare scenario.

I'm glad that you love your Magic Mouse and that it works so well for you. In the world why I live, however, people rely on keyboards to boost their efficiency, not gestures. In my case, that's a Microsoft Natural Keyboard at work. And at home, I use a JSCO Noiseless Mouse so that I don't drive anybody nuts with the clicking noise.

To be honest, I don't even really use any magical gestures on my smartphone, only the straightforward stuff. I'm a child of the 80s and use computers like Flynn used to do it in the original Tron movie, I do not use magic wands like Harry Potter.

LoL! That was good.

Basic System Requirements for OS X Mountain Lion:

64-Bit Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better required
Ability to boot into OS X 64-bit kernel
Advanced GPU chipset required
Internet connection required to download and install OS X 10.8
You can check for 64 bit kernel boot suport by typing “uname -a” at the command line, launch the Terminal to do this.

Lion a big Mistake

Based on this post and his history here, he's never tried Lion.

I have it on a new mac mini...Apple mail. tiny icons no longer in color..no bouncing mail back to sender, thin scroll, bring your magnifying glass. Calendar...you almost need a class to figure out all the features and be able to use them
Address Book...no color fonts, no size increase...everything tiny.
I guess tiny is the new fashion but I think it sucks.

What is your monitor resolution? If you lower it everything will look larger.

I'm 54, and wear bifocals, and I see everything just fine in Lion on my 24" iMac.

As far as the color icons, who cares?

Apple: Synonim for frustration

Apple is giving to us, consumers, another kick in the back. I have a MacBook early 2008. Now, what? I will stay stuck on Snow Leopard, because Lion is a battery consumer. I have to say that I don't trust Apple nevermore. On the other hand, for what I have been reading, Windows 8 has the ability to not only make new machines shine, but also an ability to resurrect the many old “boat anchor” PCs laying around that so many of us had give up on.
