I updated to Snow Leopard and Lion the weekend following their release. I loved Snow Leopard and I've been okay with Lion—no stability issues or real problems, but there have been some hiccups.

So this weekend is Mountain Lion time.

I wonder if Apple is going to move to a yearly release cycle on their OS. On one hand that's kind of cool. On another, I have a couple machines that can't make the jump to Lion or Mountain Lion. Snow Leopard being EOLed so quickly is a little annoying in that regard.

For the brave ones only, prepare for bugs galore.

Btw, 19.99 is $19 dollars too much, this is the most overpriced service pack ever, and it would have been the most shameful/shameless release of os x hadn't it been for Lion.

It's sad to see the os we loved, the one that had Redmond starting their photocopiers being reduced to this.

I ve said it before and I ll say it again, os x is a joke these days.
You aren't saying anything that hasn't been said previously about OS X. "The new upgrade being the worst upgrade ever, Apple's lost it's mojo" mantra is repeated endlessly every time there's a new OS X upgrade.

TechRadar, 6/9/2009 "Snow Leopard is little more than a service pack"

Are TechRadar related to GamesRadar? Because if they are, they're trolling for hits.

Anyway, I still think SL is the most solid OS X of the modern era, and is probably the best one to use for my 2009 system but I am enjoying the eye candy of Mountain Lion so far.

If this is a Service Pack then I like it!!

I'm ready for my Dictation and Airplay features.

Messages has already made my texting life better

iCloud now working with documents ...finally. Now we can see what it really does.

Will reserve judgement on memory management until I see how the OS and apps perform. We're still in the midst of the transition to ARC so it could take a bit for things to settle into a groove.

What the complainers aren't telling you is that OS X, despite not earning top dollars for Apple, is still valuable and Apple continues to extend its feature-set where it makes sense.

So much of it has been made modern..we're ready to jump forward and take advantage of HiDPI and faster hardware that are coming with speed.

Buckle up

I agree.

How much money was there in the smartphone/tablet markets when Apple entered them? Now look at them.

It's impossible to predict what the next major trend will be - but Apple has shown that they're pretty darn good at it. They have to still be pouring money into OSX and related hardware, just like they are with so many other markets (maybe televisions?).

If they don't, they'll never make that next "iPad". Just adapting to trends only gets you so far (Microsoft Zune, and even though Microsoft has had tablets before, the Surface Tablet is essentially adapting to this new trend that Apple's popularity was able to get into motion).

I think tablets hit an interesting spot with people, and helped with a lot of the inconveniences of a laptop. I think Apple is smart in trying to adopt some of that into its laptops. The Macbook Air was the first example, and now the Macbook Pro, but I think there's a lot more to come.

Note in the earnings thread that 86% of Apple's earnings come from IOS and other - only 14% from systems running OSX.

The new Apple is run by MBAs, not by people with a passion for the Mac.
They're quickly going to get to the saturation point of the smartphone and tablet markets, which will likely turn the MBA/bean counters' attention back to the computer market, where they could stand to grow quite a bit more.

Which to me is why the iOS-ification of OS X makes perfect sense. Someone with iOS-only experience being able to "feel comfortable" in front of a Mac drops the "but I only know Windows and don't want to learn a new computer OS from scratch" objection to buying a Mac quite a bit.

I'll predict that the "growth" area will be cheaper smartphones and tablets - not desktop/laptop systems.

If Apple announces a development toolchain for IOS that runs on Windows, consider OSX to be dead.

As stated in this thread before it may be released in the morning at Cupertino time (California). That's in the US and I'm currently sitting in Europe, Vienna and noticing that it's ****** 4:30 AM! I shall be asleep by now. I think it'll be say 8 AM in California (west coast), 10 AM in New York (east coast), 4 PM in the UK and 5 PM in Austria/Mainland Europe.

The Apple Stores are likely to sell them. But since they'll be a bit more expensive (it was that way with Lion), you should try it with your own USB drive. Also you can recycle your USB drive after installation of Mountain Lion for say... storing your data obviously. :p

Anyways, good luck with that, mate.

BTW why are you installing clean? An upgrade won't touch your data and programs.

I want to but since it won't touch my date like you said, I might not but I'm glad I have what you wrote for me. That way I can keep it in my files for future use if I don't do it. THANK YOU though :)

I AM GUILTY OF THAT. LOL! Just saying. :)

The Mac App Store is now saying that I don't have OS X Lion installed...

Image

I always went in the store and saw INSTALLED under it...

That's what happened to me, because, after I complained about multiple charges for multiple downloads on the same Apple ID, they refunded all charges, but at the same time, as far as the App Store is concerned, reduced the number of copies I owned to zero.

I have 2 macs on the same apple id with lion, one was purchased after june 11 so i get mountain lion free, will I then get it free on the other computer as well or does it only unlock one download in the app store?

I have a 16gb flash drive with a bootable version of OSX that I keep for a number of reasons - to bring to college when iMacs are available and I don't want to bring my computer, to parasite off another Mac to relieve my MacBook from another charge cycle, and most importantly to TEST SOFTWARE!!! :D

I'm pumped to play with 10.8! I would never deploy a new OS on my primary computer until a few versions in, when all the bugs are worked out, just in case. However, I have no problem throwing it on to a flash drive! :) It's times like this when I feel like such a geek, but new Apple stuff always gets me pumped.

I dunno, but I'd rather pay $20 every year than spend a hundred bucks once every three (or so) years for a competitor's operating system. Especially when one can install OS X on multiple systems.

Plus, I won't be paying $20 to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I'll be paying $16 because I figured out how to (legally) game the iTunes/App Store system.

You will be covered on both of your computers.

Posting from ML now, new Safari is.....snappy :p

Everything else was a little slow to get going, I really wanted to do a fresh install but once again Apple doesn't provide the option and the other ways of going about it were too time consuming.

Love the new wallpapers they threw in, going to play around with the new stuff in a bit. Also noticed the new dock, seems a lot more bold and eye popping.
How did you get it?

COME TO MAMA!!!!

I’m hoping for a major update of iWork as well. This seems like the perfect opportunity for it. Given that iWork.com is to be shut down and the iWork applications need to be updated for iCloud, an update tomorrow is inevitable. More interesting though should be the fact that the Software Update function is not available anymore in Mountain Lion, which means that customers of iWork ’09 (DVD version) cannot update anymore, unless the App Store works with apps that have not been purchased through the App Store.

Damn it, it’s time, Apple!

Newbie question: As I understand it I can upgrade up to five computers from my ID. I bought a new iMac a few months ago with Lion. I'll pay for the upgrade, but can I upgrade my daughter's Mac Book Pro that's on Snow Leopard straight to Mountain Lion? Or must I upgrade to Lion first? Thanks in advance.
