This is odd... I'm getting the "An error occurred..." message on Safari 8.0. When I change user agent (Develop > User agent) to anything other than Safari 8.0, it works as one would expect, straight into the video. Strange, but definitely something on YouTube's end.

I just noticed the same problem right before I read this post. Like literally trying to watch the Microsoft Cartona vs. Siri ad. It wouldn't load until I refreshed and then "error, etc.." popped up and then started to play the vid.

Apple is really starting to wear me out on multiple devices. C'mon guys, I can only stand so much before I venture to another direction.

I cant believe people thought this was a Safari problem when YT was the ONLY site displaying any issues.

The anti-Apple sentiment on this forum is mind-boggling sometimes.

Exactly. And still, even after it has been determined that the issue was on YouTube's end, people are coming into this thread to blame Apple and bring up numerous issues that have nothing to do with this incident.

Just proves that some people really want to dislike Apple at all costs.

Wow Apple just loves breaking Safari for everyone these days. Glad to see its not just IOS.

Except that if you read the article, it clearly states this is a youtube issue. The google team released code that isn't compatible with all of the browsers.

Didn't read the whole thread..... but incase it's not mentioned... just hit refresh a time or two and it should play fine....

Ive noticed this.
I've got flash installed. Im going to uninstall that and give it another go.

I tried that. I also installed a previous version of flash but it would not playback Youtube videos as it was an older version and security risks. Still no fix basically.

Nothing to do with that, as it affects the HTML5 player too.

Today I had this problem in both Firefox and Safari. both were fine before. I am on 10.10.1. so this seems to be a youtube and/or flash issue not related to any os x updates.

What I've found:

This started a few hours ago.

It's nothing to of with 10.10.1, or Safari (its been days since I updated)

flash installed didn't work.
Uninstalled flash, and so turning to HTML5
That doesn't work.

Installed Flash, and Click to Flash
It has intermediate effect.

Changing the User Agent in Developer Menu, to something else works.

Playback on iOS works.

It seems to be the Safari Desktop User Agent is effected by, what I presume is, a change by You Tube.

This happens. Supporting lots of Devices and browsers is getting to be a huge issue, especially as almost every connected TV now is a different user-agent.
There has been some slippage here at the YouTube end.

Hey guys. Since we don't know how long it will take for Google to fix this (yes it is definitely something wrong on Google's end and Not Apple's), here is a quick temp fix.

1. Open a new tab
2. Type youtube.com
3. Open Safari Preferences
4. Go to the 'Advanced' tab and at the bottom, check the box that says 'Show Develop menu in menu bar'
5. Now 'Develop' is in your menu bar. Click on it, go to user agent and select Safari 7.1. Voila! Enjoy YouTube again during this period of turmoil.

Note: I am a layman so please correct me if I am wrong, but this user agent change seems to be tab specific. So if you open another tab and go to youtube again even having done the above steps, you will have to change the user agent once again.

Thanks to the guys above who pointed this fix out. Hope the steps helps everyone else!

If you right click and try to get the URL for the video(s) in question, it comes back with "https://www.youtube.com/watch" with the rest of the URL that actually tells what video to play being stripped.

well it'll be interesting to find out the cause of this one!

I suspect it is a bug in safari 8 - that's always existed- and google's just enhanced their html5 youtube player and now it's triggering the bug in safari. Awaiting an update from apple to address playback issues with certain html5 videos.

wrong....

If it's a youtube issue, how come it's working perfectly fine in Chrome but not in Safari?

You can report this issue to Youtube by clicking on the sending feedback link at the bottom of any youtube.com page.

Either go to youtube.com/html5 and opt-out of the trial, or install a converter, like "Click to Plugin" which does the conversion in house.

This is not entirely a Youtube problem. I've filed several bug reports on FLASH video failures in Yosemite.

Streaming Flash video in Safari is simply problematic and it's not just Youtube. Streaming from several sports sites like NFL games for instance also caused me problems yet they worked just fine in Firefox.

If Apple thinks it's going to change the world again by killing FLASH video, they are sorely mistaken.

Just fix the damn bug Apple and stop "The War Against Flash"
People just want their machines to work.
