Genuine question— were you using different watch apps so often on the watch that the dock was really that useful?

I legitimately can’t think of anything to do on my watch besides reply to text messages, check the weather, and skip the song I’m listening to. And I don’t do that so often in the same session that I even need to access the app switcher.

I didn’t realize how much people used the dock

This is me. I can have access to 7 different apps on my watch face. I realize I don't use my Ultra (or any device) the same as most people, but I wonder how much time people spend on their watch that they need an "app switcher".

Not a failure, but who the hell decided to make the alarm stop button a tiny tiny little red word at the bottom of the sceen? Just what you want to try and focus in on when you’ve just woken up.
Then you decide to time how long it takes you to get out of bed and bam …. blind in both eyes.

Thinking that it might be nice to keep up to date with iOS and WatchOS developments I bought an iPhone SE to replace my 8 Plus. The result:

- The SE's screen and battery are too small for me.
- I didn't find anything in iOS 17 that was worth the small improvements (e.g. 5G) in hardware.
- WatchOS 10 had various usability issues (discussed at length in threads here, it seems) and increased battery drain considerably (20%?).

The workaround for this was to return the SE and to find an NOS Apple Watch on Ebay that was still running WatchOS 9. I'll stick with these for as long as I can.

Still not a fan of the “changes for changes sake” after using it for a month as others have mentioned. They really had a nice mix of layout and usability through the crown and button. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I think the shift stuff around is to accommodate new features. Well, one or two.

The watchface swiping doesn't really bother me.
And there are still enough watchfaces that allow for a sufficient number of app complications to be placed.

What REALLY REALLY bothers me is that the double klick on the crown to jump back to the most recently used app got removed (or more difficult and confusing to access).
A very frequently used feature. WTH were they thinking?
Well, the App Switcher, (most) recently used apps sorted from bottom to top, still exists. However, the Dock function, select apps as Favorites, has been removed.

For me, the change to pressing the side button to activate Control Center vs. swipe up is clunky, even annoying at times. In part, I don’t consider my watch old, yet it’s now laggy when activating Apple Pay (i.e., double press of the side button). Other changes I’ve accepted (or just ignoring) much faster.

yes, but the app switcher was not my point.
Pre-OS10, a double klick on the crown brought you right back to the previously used app, instantly. No need to look at and to tap at a tiny spot in a list of apps. A great convenience feature, simply gone.

Fair point.

Thankfully Apple doesn’t (hasn’t?) made a car. It would start out with the steering wheel being used to control direction then the next year the “update” will make the center console joystick how you control the car’s direction and the main steering wheel is used to navigate the CarPlay screen. Innovation! Courage!

Personally, the only issue I have with watchOS 10 (aside from the bugs) is the rotate-crown-up-for-widgets. Too often I look down at my watch only to see the widget screen and not my watch face because at some point I inadvertently touched the crown to my pocket or something. It's annoying.

Drastically changing user experience and motor reflexes that users leaned over many generations of product is a very bad practice.

Yes there are different ways to accomplish the same functions but it’s a piss poor excuse for such a drastic change. And yes, a lot of users including myself and my wife relied on quickly swiping between faces to achieve maximum usability. It was a very flexible system and I can’t see any good reasons to change it.

Pre-iPhone X it was swipe up on both platforms to access Control Center… now it’s fragmented.

IMO I still think TimeTravel and Force touch were mistakes to remove…

Wow! This is great news! Now if only they'll return the ability for the apps list to go to the last item selected in the list, as opposed to starting at the first app in alphabetical order. That's one thing that I truly miss from WatchOS9.
Just double click the crown.

Also, the new grid view is more convenient to me than the alphabetical list view. One tap provides quick access 17 of my most used apps with more just a quick scroll away.
