This is actually an improvement. Always hated that the watch face could be changed so easily.
I loved changing Watch faces easily.

Now I'm stuck w/ Infograph since it displays the most amount of complications.

I agree with the original poster;
WatchOS10 although not a failure,
is not great.

Point of clarification — the way it works now is how it was for a couple years when the watch came out. The swipe was added later.
Do you know when exactly the swipe was added?
I owned a Nike Series 2 since after launch and cannot remember a time without directly swiping through faces. (Though doesn’t mean it’s always been like that, well possible I forgot.😊)

Did they get rid of the flashlight? Believe it or not this is one feature I use often and I can't seem to find it on my watch.

Swiping between faces existed from watchOS 3 to watchOS 9

Personally I never used the swipe between faces, and had my face accidentally swap a few times.

But the solution just seems to be making this a toggle. Apple removed the feature, but they aren't using the gesture for anything else...so why not leave it as an option, turned off by default?

I'm happy I found this thread because this new update has killed the Apple Watch for me. I think people who like the changes are entitled to enjoy them, and the people who are unhappy have the right to be unhappy. And I agree with many in this thread that a lot of these changes should be adjustable in settings.

I have my “daily” watch face, my “night out” watch face, and my “workout” watch face. I switch between these depending on what information I need on-tap, and Apple has significantly prolonged the time it takes to make this step. It’s also killed my muscle memory. From a customer experience view, I’m surprised they just “made” these changes and sprouted them on the user. Think of all the casual users who used control center or the recent apps. All of a sudden that muscle memory they’ve potentially built for years is disrupted.

I like information at a glance. It is so much easier for me to twist my wrist and see my complications than to grab my other hand and rotate the dial. (which is clearly what Apple now wants you to do)

My watch is also commonly my phone finder, which you have to do in control center. It feels so much more…abrasive to press the side button than to swipe from the bottom.

The only other two things I use is timers and the weather. Sometimes I’ll tap the weather to see the temperature for the rest of the day. Why is the weather app so damn bright? Like right now I have white text on yellow. What the hell is with that UI???

And this is minor, but the last thing that bothers me is that now when I get a call, the answer and hang-up buttons are small. This feels like really poor UI. I don’t understand it.

I’m happy for those who like the changes. I wish I were in the same boat. WatchOS 10 makes so many fundamental and core changes (control center and easy watch face changing) that I no longer enjoy using my watch. I don’t use power tools like replying on my watch or taking calls. I think my time with the Apple Watch has come to an end. So I am selling my Apple Watch.

If you consider yourself more of a casual user, I highly recommend you check out the Withings lineup. I had a Withings watch before I got my Apple Watch. I got my Apple Watch during COVID for the mask unlock feature and took a leap on the tech. However, in that time, Withings has certainly repositioned itself as an Apple Watch alternative for those who enjoy the “charisma” of an analog watch. They are truly beautiful. (there are more color options than I'm showing)

It has, as they say, 30 day battery life (my last one had a week battery)

Here are some good commonalities it has with the Apple Watch, if you’re at least curious:

Health:
  • Apple Health integration
  • Sleep monitoring (including night heart-rate variability for stress and sleep quality)
  • Respiratory rate overnight for breathing issue detection
  • Steps
  • Workout detection (40+ different workouts)
  • Cycle tracking
  • High/low heart rate detection
  • ECG
  • Blood-oxygen
  • Temperature monitoring (although I am unaware of how accurate this is)

Chassis:
  • Saphire glass (on ScanWatch 2, see comparison page for other models)
  • 316L Stainless steek

“Smart” Features
  • Third-party app notifications
  • traditional phone and text (email and calendar as well) notifications

I can’t find concrete information on the current lineup, but the past lineup had a vibration motor. A small ink or OLED display manages all these smart features (depends on the model).

I suspect many here use too many other features to find this an alternative. However, for more passive users like myself who are a little fed up, I must say I am excited to make this switch. I didn’t dislike my Withings when I left.

More people accidentally swiped between faces than did so deliberately. It made sense to axe it.

I was one of those people. It was so annoying that I just ended up deleting every face except for Modular Infographic. But now with the face swipe gone I now have a reason to have more than one watchface equipped. I now alternate between Infographic and Snoopy.

I accidentally swiped too, but I also intentionally switched faces. I'm kind of in between on this one, it's not as easy to switch, it's true, but I also don't have to switch back after an inadvertent switch. Now the control center with the button, I don't like that, but I should eventually get used to it!

The Apple Watch does so much that I’m willing to tolerate it as opposed to abandoning ship and going with Withings. But wish I could. I’m definitely using the watch itself less and less now although it’s still on my wrist.

One annoying little change that i’ve only just discovered is after you’ve double tapped the screen with two fingers to zoom in (handy when your eyes cant read the small text) the wheel used to scroll through the whole screen both up and down and left and right. But now it only scrolls up and down. Which means you cant see the zoomed in text that has disappeared off both sides of the screen. You have to use your two fingers to move it about instead. The old way was a lot easier

I am genuinely surprised how many people here claim to have been accidentally changing their watch face before, some even „all the time“. I don‘t recall this ever being a point of discussion in all these years that we had this function.
Funnily, from time to time I find that my watch went into to "face edit" mode, assumingly by an accidential long tap. I'd actually wish this edit mode would not trigger on long taps but something else more complex (e.g. double tap with two fingers or something like that).
Accidentially swiping to another watch face never was a real issue for me though, and I am using Apple watches since series 2 was released...

The Stocks complication is messed up. It no longer keeps updating in the background as it did before the update. I have to tap it open to get updated information.

This IS the type of thing that if we complained enough about it, Apple probably would give us an option in settings to turn this on or off.

The heart-rate sensor on Withings seems to be pretty dire.

True the Apple of recent years seems more open about user feedback. Remember when they reverted the Safari changes / made them optional.

I hope everyone annoyed by it already sent feedback to Apple about it. I certainly did.

Thanks for sharing, I didn’t know. The ScanWatch 2 is notably absent from that test. However, in either event, all I want from my watch is notifications, sleep monitoring and step counting. My Withings from years ago did all of those with good enough accuracy for my needs. So for me, it’s no different. Ever since I made that post I have grown less and less in love with my Apple Watch. Obviously those who value the health features more may struggle to shrug at the potential accuracy of current models.

I don’t like the removal of a custom dock and the swipe removal… I hate. I wouldn’t say it’s a failure. Plenty of people like it. It doesn’t fail because of my preference.
Agreed, Love the Dock feature on my Ultra. Kinda lost with out it. At least there are widgets which are very similar to the dock at least. JMO
