Translation: Apple tries to buy an Oscar….

Great movie though.
The movie has already been nominated meaning the academy voters who make the final decision on winners have already seen this movie long ago. If Apple released it for free before nominations, then you might have a point but you don't.

I understand how the process works but if you are going to outright ignore public opinion and it’s potential to sway the academy’s votes then I’ll point you to a little move called Rocket Man(or insert your favorite loser here). Don’t be naive.

How many of those studios are streaming only and relatively new? I think only Netflix has an Oscar at this point for that Affleck movie I can’t recall right now(don’t quote me, I’m honestly not sure if they are only one). This isn’t a screener, these are grassroots-inspiring(get it out to more people), free, PUBLIC screenings.

Don’t kid yourself; they are trying to stack the deck. Not doing anything no other smart company wouldn’t do though. Shrewd move.
Netflix is leading with 15 oscars, Amazon has won 2. Apple is simply trying to elevate their status as more than just a streaming platform you watch on TV. They want to win awards and prestige just like anyone else but re-releasing a movie for free, long after the Academy nominations have been chosen has nothing to do with the actual winning of an Oscar.

Disagree. Why do you think they give the academy substantial time after the nominations to vote? And why do you think they used rank based voting? (I can’t remember the term off the top of my head but they vote for more then one ”winner” per category in order of their preference)

I think if they made public the runners up by vote, people would understand it more. Public opinion does matter. Take a look at black winners for example in any category and compare to how many won before 2009.

Rocket Man wasn't nominated for best picture so it couldn't win. Coda has already been nominated. The Academy is known primarily for going against public opinion so how would popularizing a movie after it's already been nominated help Apple?

That’s funny. I remember being told that every state in the Union has a “Lexington” but never bothered to confirm…
I reside in Canada. Apple Maps shows at least 11 states with a Lexington.

In movies Lexington is always in Kentucky. In movies the other Paris is in Texas.

A) I used that movie as an example; note I said any category.

B) Look at the subject matter of the movie; what public opinon is out there in the negative(ignoring the few in the deaf community that seem to hate it)?You are being incredibly naive; they are campaigning for the award. For the nomination(which clearly worked) and the killing blow. It’s a process that’s pretty open and fully allowed by the Academy.

You're confusing popularity with politics. The Academy only cares about popularity when it comes to nominees. That's why they've increased the category to support 10 best picture nominees. When it comes to actual winners they are very political as shown by the "favorite" or most popular movie being upset with a loss almost every year.

I dunno, I hear Lexington and I think Massachusetts but I’m a history buff and not a native Kentuckian so…

Spot on. Just another attempt by someone trying to diminish Apple’s achievement.

Sadly, it’s the norm here.

lol you are being obtuse on purpose I think. Again, look at recent black winners(did they all deserve their win?) Did Heath Ledger? etc etc

The pulse of the public clearly matters.

No I’m not, I said off the bat it’s a great movie. And I have said multiple times that they are doing the smart thing. My original comment was more akin to “why is this even a story” then anything else.

Free is free but I assume this is part of the Oscars campaign. Grabbing Best Picture would be huge.

I think the bigger question is how the hell did Dune get a best picture nom? West Side Story should win but won’t, not sure who will. It’s been what? 20 years since a musical took it?

It's a story because of cynics like you. Apple wants awards but they need AppleTV+ subscribers even more than awards. When considering the Academy's history of awarding winners, I believe these free screenings will actually hurt their chances of winning more than help but we'll see.

…so wait…what people think matters now? If cynics have pull so do fans…

If the overall goal was to just get new subscribers they would have released something more universal or maybe even a wider selection for free. Or are we supposed to just assume they picked the Best Picture nom for a free screening “just because”?

jeez..
