No I’m not, I said off the bat it’s a great movie. And I have said multiple times that they are doing the smart thing. My original comment was more akin to “why is this even a story” then anything else.

You said: "Translation: Apple tries to buy an Oscar…."

Translation: Apple's movie isn't worth on Oscar based on its merits, and thus needs to do something out of the ordinary (making the movie free in theaters) in order to stack the deck in its favor trying to win one.

Um, no. It already has a nomination remember? And I’m the cynic…haha

No. Nice try, your original comment for the story (Apple releasing the movie for free)
was "Translation: Apple tries to buy an Oscar."

And? Like I further stated it’s not anything anyone else isn’t doing.

Ah yes, the quaint way Brits often think London, England is the only London in the world. Perhaps they mean London, ONT, Canada? :)

You make a good point re: London in Canada! My bad, to an extent.

I think the difference is that in all likelihood someone is talking about the original place, not a namesake (but context is important, too). Often when I've heard people from the states refer to London in the way I'm talking about, it's clear they don't have a smidgen of a concept of how different other parts of the UK can be to 'London'.

Seriously though, perhaps the movie is only being shown free at theaters in London, England and not all of England??

That was more the point I was trying to make – that it seems whoever decided this only be shown free in London cinemas was doing the thing where they equate London as the whole UK.

It's unlikely someone would make a special trip to London for a free film, when they have a perfectly good cinema in their town or city.

Apple TV+ movie "CODA" recently received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, and to celebrate and get the film out to more people, Apple is planning to re-release it in theaters for free.

"CODA" will be available to watch for free in theaters from Friday, February 25 to Sunday, February 27. All of the free screenings will feature open captions so they are accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

The movie will be available in theaters across the United States and London, with three daily showtimes available for audiences to attend on a first come, first serve basis. One show in Los Angeles will also feature a live Q&A with the cast and the director, Siân Heder.

"Every so often, a film comes along that strikes a deep emotional chord for audiences who celebrate its win for humanity. CODA does just that. Siân and the amazing cast and crew of 'CODA' gave the world a gift with this film, and we are inspired to pass this gift on," Apple's Head of Features Matt Dentler said in a statement about the showings.

"CODA" is the first film starring a predominantly Deaf cast to receive a nomination for Best Picture. It tells the story of Ruby Rossi, a high schooler who is the only hearing member of her family. As she explores her love of singing in high school and prepares for her future, she also grapples with her familial responsibilities and helping her father with his fishing business.

Since launch, "CODA" has received largely positive reviews and it currently has a 96 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Really good move on Apples part. Just another of those things that the MSM doesn't give any credit for....maybe not 'negative ' enough.

…so wait…what people think matters now? If cynics have pull so do fans…

If the overall goal was to just get new subscribers they would have released something more universal or maybe even a wider selection for free. Or are we supposed to just assume they picked the Best Picture nom for a free screening “just because”?

jeez..
Stop being willfully ignorant. I said Apple values awards and subscribers. Do you really believe they care more about a shelf full of awards than profiting from their technology in an effort to change the world? Awards are a means to an end.

The award is a means to an end; hence doing whatever to get it. Never said it was the Oscar or bust.

Which is it? Would Apple be self-serving or not? You keep going back and forth. They wouldn’t pander for an Oscar but they would for a few potential new subscribers? Like this particular movie speaks to their base in the slightest. I’m not discounting the humanitarian aspect of picking said film but if you honestly think it was picked over say any other movie and that it happens to have(a rightful) Best Picture nom that is just coincidental…give me a break.

Although not as common today, movies would sometimes open in major cities first before being rolled out nationwide. There is a cost for Apple showing it for free and it looks like it's only being shown for free in 20 theaters in the U.S. and one (Barbican Cinema, London) in the U.K.

Perhaps it will be re-released (at regular ticket prices) in many more theaters in the coming months.

My movie back log que is huge, but I may prioritize this one, as I heard amazing things. If this movie received a 96% on R.T.’s, that’s pretty amazing.

That’s funny. I remember being told that every state in the Union has a “Lexington” but never bothered to confirm…
Mine has Lexington, Albemarle, a New London (population about 75), a New Bern, and for some weirdo reason TWO towns named "Holly Springs" (opposite side of the state, but dunno how they managed that).

In order for some movies to be available for academy swears they need to be in theaters. Apple didn’t want to mess with distribution so this is a way to get in into theaters.

Free screening? Like I just walk into the movie theater?
How does this sit well with the owners of the theater?

I believe they love the narrative of the story and I can promise these screenings will show a quality family movie with the opportunity to heavily market Apple TV+ on the big screen for a lot less than a 30 second Super Bowl spot. With a ton of goodwill to go with it. From families to theater owners, everyone wins.
