Well, god knows what was causing the issue, but I've reached the end of my wick! Some digging and a visit to the Genius bar has revealed that it's definitely a drive issue - whether physical or software I don't know.

Anyway, I've bought DiskWarrior, and that's chuntering away now, in the hope that I can get hold of my files from that physical drive (I've backed up the second Physical Drive already). DiskWarrior seems pretty good!

kind of solved

Hello Guys, this just happened to me today. I was browsing and the OS bricked itself. I could solve it for myself without reinstalling the system and I have all the files only some settings are missing, but better than lose everything. Here is my way:

In single user mode I have entered the following:
/sbin/mount -uw /
Enter,
rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
Enter.

Then reboot and the welcome screen let me set a new admin account. Then I copied all my files and settings I could from the messed up account to my new and deleted the old. I even could manage to get all the Safari settings, bookmarks, etc.

I know this is not the best way, but works so far. Spent only a few hours.

I hope it helps.

Cheers,

Viktor:)
