I kind of like the ability to watch DVDs on my notebook without the need for an external accessory... I don't really do that often in reality but the option is nice lol I'm sort of surprised that so many seem to see the drive as obsolete now.

If we take the floppy extinction patron as a layout for what will happen with ODD, then the ODD in the MBP line still have a long way to go. "Professional" computers/laptops were the last to abandon floppy disks, while mainstream computers were the first to do so.

I believe ODD still have 3 years left living inside MBPs, but if something is certain with Steve Jobs, is that you can never predict him.....

Its cool how you can download a OS from the app store now but I want a actual disc since I always loved the design of Apple's new OS box haha

I knew I was forgetting one! It's been 4 years since I've stuck a DVD movie into my MacBook Pro. That's what *cough* DVD rips *cough* are for.

And how else do you acquire those without a DVD drive to do the ripping from your legally owned DVDs?

This is no proof. Because if you want to install OS X, you have to install Snow Leapord ( you need a DVD ) and then upgrade to OS X Lion using App Store.

So in conclusion, you still need a DVD drive in order to install OX Lion.

That is some awful reasoning. You are assuming that the 2012 models will come preloaded with snow leopard.

I'd love to know what DVD's will come included in the box in future. e.g. my 2011 MBP came with Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and iLife 2011. Will they provide two discs with Lion and iLife on in future? Or since both can be downloaded from the App Store, just a free download for owners of the relevant model of MBP? I'd have thought there must be some form of recovery DVD provided, since you need an OS installed just to get to the App Store...

Just out of curiosity, how I will acquire Lion if my country does not support AppStore? I mean I've tried to use AppStore in the past however it's not possible to use my local credit card .

Any suggestions? 🙂

huh? Where did I saw that. The 2012 models will come with OS X lion ofcourse.

What I'm saying is that if you want to do a clean install of OS X lion, you need Snow Leopard.

You can do carbon copy or time machine restore if you put in a new drive, but it's better to do a clean install. For this, you need a DVD drive.

It's simple - you don't, you use Linux...

+1 on the "what happens if I want to re-install OSX" questions.

An OSX option to backup the Snow Leopard and the Lion onto a USB stick would be nice both for MBAir and MBP+optibay owners.

Or perhaps a way to backup on DVD as well (and install from an external USB device - not sure if that's already doable with SL) would be nice also. MBAirs were given the SL on a flashdrive, it makes sense that Lion could be just copied over on one, as well.

I think it might be a card or bank problem, not an appstore limitation.

Try a different credit card (if any).
My GB and Greek ones work fine, if that means anything for Cyprus...

I guess the day Lion is available for download we'll see hundreds of posts with "OMG Lion takes 48 hrs to download", "Why do Lion only download with 14kb/sec when i have a 16 mbit cable" etc.. 😛

If apple removes the ODD I'm pretty sure they will ship OSX on a USB stick (or maybe even a SD chip, why aren't programs delivered this way, it's standard on almost all new macs and SD is fast enough and does have the capacity)

OSX is already on a USB stick, that's how they ship it for the MBA

Its a pretty big leap to make a complete operating system only available through the app store. i think this may be a big [indirect] indication that next years mbp line (if it is revamped) will see no ODD.. yeah?

I don't mind that I need to download the OS, I have to do that for Linux and when I bought windows from MS, it was download only. The bone of contention for me is that its the only way and it installs in place. I want a recovery dvd since my Macs have optical drives and there is a need for such from time to time

I am not sure the ODD will be taken out... but I'd like it to. And there are quite a number of reasons why I think it might happen.

a) The success of iTunes: Apple wants you to buy your music through iTunes, and offers you a generally cheaper deal than what you get on a CD. Getting rid of the ODD is, in a way, forcing you to buy your music through there. More profit for them.

b) The Mac App Store: Apple saw the success iTunes has been, saw the success the iOS App Store is being... and decided to re-apply a clearly winning formula. This will satisfy the software needs of most of Apple's main customers: the Americans.

c) The Macbook Air: Apple said MBAs were "the way of the future", which might mean that soon their lines will adopt the "No Optical Drive, No HDD" philosophy.
And before you say MBP - ODD = MBA, don't forget the MBP has a whole number of features that the MBA does not have, in exchange for decreased portability: backlit keyboard, more battery, more CPU/GPU power (even after the MBA refresh that will be coming), lower price when compared to the same-inch-product. So no, a MBP - ODD isn't a MBA.

d) The redesign: it is widely speculated the MBPs will suffer a big redesign on next release. Aside from the possible usage of Liquid Metal / Carbon Fiber as materials I can't see much being changed, except possibly for an internal redesign. In the inside, I can see a much wider number of possibilities: the substitution of the HDD for SSD/Flash storage, and/or the removal of the ODD for a bigger battery/a dedicated GPU in the 13''/a HDD+SSD combo/a lighter laptop.

e) The way Apple supplied its software to the MBA: Apple cared specifically about not forcing MBA users to buy an external superdrive, and supplied a USB Pen with the OS.

The reason for this method is all about authorization. The App Store is effectively a DRM walled garden. Unless you are signed into the App Store account that purchased Lion, I do not think you will be able to upgrade.

It is a pain and copy-protection makes life for those who pay for their software inconvenient, but such is life. It should drive the price down a bit, though. Now the vast majority of people are going to actually pay for Lion which was not likely the case for Snow Leopard.

Hopefully Carbon Copy Cloner will work on Lion. Sounds like cloning might be the answer to having a "install disc" for clean installs.

For those of us that want to do a clean install, it sounds like we are going to have to install a clean version of Snow Leopard with the App Store and then install Lion via the App Store.

I will wait until the first update before even thinking about it. I need to wait until Pro Tools plays nice with Lion before it becomes my production OS.

Lion has a recovery partition that you can boot from.

The real problem is if your hard drive is toast and can't be booted from, how are you going to install Lion when you get a new hard drive? At that point, there still needs to be installation DVDs included in the package for that particular situation.

As for users who upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion, you really should be able to burn a DVD to install from (minus printer drivers which alone are 3-4GB).

My biggest question is still this: What if the cloud is unreachable? Being connected is still a privilege, not a right. There could still be chances that the provider failing or iCloud failing.

I was actually thinking the same thing. Right after it was announced that Lion was going to be available on the App Store, my immediate thought was, "No ODD on next year's MBPs". Personally, I would miss it. I use my a lot to burn music and movies into my MBP.

I don't understand why people can't just burn the DMG file to a DVD through Disk Utility.. or is it not a DMG file?
One can hope. I can't picture Lion "popping" into your dock like other app store apps and just begin to upgrade immediately.

If it's just a DMG file then all is cool.
