Just to clarify. My phone wasn't syncing properly even though I restored it 3 times and set it up as a new phone every single time.

Then I read online to clear the store cache in iTunes and that actually fixed it! It's been syncing perfectly ever since.

I have restored mine 4-5 times and it freezes up with auto sync. Worth a try anyway, thankis.

Waiting to download 8.1 this morning on iTunes.
Will post again with results.
Its amazing how SO MANY people miss what I put in the original post. So I will CAPS all the important details.

My phone was DFU restored. THE NIGHT BEFORE. Less than 10 hours.

Apps totaling just about 1 GB with an app cache (i.e facebook-203MB) thats slightly less.
NO MUSIC.
NO PHOTOS.
NO BOOKS.
NO EMAIL ACCTS.
NO MEDIA.
NOTHING on the phone.

"other" file was 699MB, then this.

For people to say 'its designed to work this way' are so obtuse to the fact that this is a problem.

Its so frustrating to have like 7GB free on a 16 GB phone.

And who changed the title of my post?! All for saying WTF in the title?

big brother man, i tell ya……
very orwellian here. :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I simply asked how you know it's a problem. What is stored in the first 700MB that everyone thinks is OK?

At 2.68GB after doing the OTA update to 8.1.

Hmmm.... 8.1 fixed this issue for me. I had 7.0GB available yesterday and now I magically have 8.5. Weird.

Of "other" or free space?

Were talking about OTHER here.

BTW, did a clean install of 8.1 DFU so will report back later today on if the problem persists.

Like most on this thread I have many GBs of other on my iPad. Not really a problem but I'm curious as to what it is.
Is there any app available that can analyse it and tell us in understandable form what makes up this mysterious other stuff. There must be some seriously smart folks on this forum that can dig into it and explain what the heck it all is!

I just looked and I have a 3.08 GB other as well. I upgraded to 8.1 and it's still there. Maybe I'll wipe the iPad this weekend and do a fresh install and see what happens. I only have 500GB free and that's after I deleted a 1.2GB app prior to installing 8.1 (from 7.x) so I would like my space back.

I did a test on my iPhone 4(this is the one with the "other" problem with about 6.2GB) backed up to computer then to iCloud for safety measure and erase all setting/data. Set up phone as new then restore from backup from MacBook.
After it shows up in iTunes, the problem reappears and it shows there's 4GB of other data in the iPhone.
Note: I guess the other data comes from the apps as there's no music/videos/photos at least in my case.

Totally stock iPhone 5 here, restored in DFU mode to 8.1.

Used storage was 788MB afterwards with nothing changed from stock, no apps had been opened etc.
After a couple of reboots this has crept up to 1.1GB.
iTunes reports 'Other' as 1.02GB.

So I guess this is the baseline usage for stock 8.1 before you start using the phone.

Hi All!

Wanted to share my experience! Yesterday I updated to 8.1, everything was perfect. I went to bed, and disconnected wifi and data. Today, when I woke up, my 5S had a message on the lockscreen telling me that I had run out of space .

Then I went to prefs panel, usage, and there you go, 0kb free space, wow. I deleted a game to free up space, and the space miraculously was indeed filling up the free space I just got. I have no strange space info on the prefs pane, so I just left it that way, waiting to restore my 8.0.2 backup. iTunes told me that I had 15 gb of documents space in my iphone, which was not true.

So two hours later, I checked again my 5S, and again, miraculously, I had 15 gb of free space.

I have no clue guys.

EDIT: Hi there, my free spaces is being cut down again. Now I only have 9gb free, apparently whithout any valid reason, sigh.

Why would the other space be apps? The size of my apps fluctuates depending on what I'm using them for so wouldn't app space cover the apps? I don't recall having "other" space being taken up to this extent on previous iOS versions.

Hi all

Well my 32gb iPad mini with retina had 22gb of "Other" and couldn't download iOS8.1 earlier - I had to do it through the Mac!

I backed it up to the Mac.

After that I reset the iPad and wiped all data.

Then restored it and a huge chunk of "Other" has now gone.

It really does seem like there's somethings not right at all with iOS...

its a hidden ios api

basically, our phones respond to a message from apple to this api which causes the phone to either increase or decrease the size of "other" .

apple know that when the "other" size grows then more folk will show up at the apple store for a new phone. when stock is short they cause the "other" files to shrink to make sure that supply is available before folk show up. thus the supply chain is fully optimised.

this is the ONLY rationale explanation for the rubber chicken ****** voodoo that is the "other" storage category.
