are you kidding me? not just how to hold it, in what direction the phone is hold can also contribute the signal strength. all cell phones have the same issue.

true, but when I hold my 2G or my 3G or my 3Gs to make a phone call it doesn't loose service simply because I am holding it. Yes I understand that the direction you hold it will make a difference, no *****.

Ok, all phones lose some signal when holding them tightly with your hands. They do however still seem to be working normally in most cases.

iPhone 4 seems to be an extreme case of this making it unable to get a data connection or make phone calls. Definitely not comparable and definitely something Apple must fix. Apple saying 'just don't hold it like that' is not sufficient when this is clearly a design flaw.

Apple just lost me as a customer. What a bunch of callous jerks. Ive never had a single phone that I could kill every single call just by holding it normally. This may sit well with Apple fanboys and apologists, but not with me. I'm just a consumer that wants the most for my money.

Same here. If Apple is going to treat hardware issues as "non-issues" like that, I'm done with them. Because who knows if the next Apple product will have one of these so-called "non-issues"

Some things we can do, like make the display so sharp your eyes can't tell its not paper, music that sounds like your there, a camera that captures HD video but its smaller that the eraser on a pencil, but whats that you want it to call people, well it can't do that. :D

Omg!!!!!!!!!!

It instantly kills the battery, too?!?!?! I guess it could be worse. haha Seriously, this sucks. Guess this is kind of a week way to get us to buy accessories.

Meh....

my 2G, 3G and 3Gs DO NOT experience this.

The antenna is at the bottom back on the 3G and 3GS. (between the text and the dock connector)

You won't see the issue when you have full bars unless you have field test mode on.

Grab the phone covering tightly the bottom back when you have 3 or 4 bars to see it.

+1 thank you

Put tape on it? Are you ***** kidding me?

It was a joke. Although it does actually work. Instead of going from four bars reception to zero to no signal it instead went from four bars to two and stayed constant. At a guess the tape is enough of an insulator to reduce the conductivity that causes a weak short circuit to form between the two pieces of metal. Obviously I'm not going to be using this 'fix' though for real!

So? They may lose some bars, but they don't go into searching mode like iPhone 4 does. people are forgetting something important here. All other phones lose a few bars when held, the iPhone 4 can magically go from 5 bars to No Service when holding it. This never happens on any other phone. And if you are shorting out the antenna, its a design flaw. Your not blocking signal, but shorting the antenna losing signal.

Been doing this for years. Never had a signal problem.

You simply have to slightly adjust the way you hold your phone. Is that such a horrible thing that your ready to freak out and swear off Apple forever? Overreact much?

I have tried this test on both my iphone4s and a friends. Positively repeatable.

First, make sure wifi is off.

Now, place the iPhone on a table or hold it without bridging the antennas.

Load a web page.

Now, hold the phone so your thumb bridges the left corner insulation strip.

Try to load a web page... Doesn't load.

Release hand from insulation strip.

Page loads.

Apple owes us all at least a stupid cover. Or this will get ugly.

NO, this is not AT&T's fault. In any way.

No, sorry, but that "solution" is bull****. I shouldn't have to think about the way I hold my phone. I should be able to pick it up and have no problems regardless of how I hold it.

It would be like if your car's steering didn't work if you put your hands on the wheel at one position but it worked with your hands in another. That would be unacceptable, and it's unacceptable on the iPhone.

I have an Nexus One on T-Mobile. Like the poster on the first page, my signal strength goes up when I pick up my phone compared to when I'm not holding it.

done the same, but not happening to my iphone 4. the web site i went is appleinsider.com. tried yahoo.com, did not happen. wifi is turned off.

so what does this tell you?

If Apple doesn't fix this before my verizon contract is up, I'll be in line to take my phone back. I have a DROID as well, and I have no loss of signal while holding it. When I pick up my iPhone (got it yesterday) in the exact same place, it goes from three bars to no signal. I'm a lefty as well and unable to train my right hand to hold a phone (I'm old).

I think this is total BS by Apple. I have to admit, this is a really cool phone and it will be hard for me to return it, but I think it's crazy to have to rig a phone up with tape, a bumper, or use headphones, etc., just to have it work like it's supposed to. It's like owning a cool car with all the bells and whistles, but the engine stalls randomly when you go out driving. Whatta lemon.

Nokia 6230 manual

Here is the Nokia 6230 manual, like all Nokia manuals that I have had over the years. It is just a fact of RF engineering and life. Hard science.

oh, and the dB loss is about the same as what I see in my 3GS. On the 3GS 3G mode, Zero to 5 bars covers 22 dB (-113dBm to -91dBm). But 5 bars can be from -91dBm to -51dBm, or 40 dB higher. That is why some lose signal or don't see the effect, IMO

I got my new iphone today. It has no yellowing glue. I did try to hold the phone firmly and it only drops 1 bar. It takes effort my phone to do that.
