It's ridiculous that they take money for an application that uses a lot of code offered freely under the GPL....they are openly violating the GPL, and any attempt to strike up a discussion about why they are doing that gets deleted immediately on their forums.

Exactly.

Although, to be honest I wish they would just implement a standard fee for the app. I hate this whole 'donation/gift' crap. For that reason, I don't use their application anymore.

Mactheripper is a good program, but I agree that it was much better when it was free. If there was a trial of a newer version, I would be more likely to pay for it. Some newer DVD's are harder to break the copy protection to backup. How am I supposed to know if the newest version of Mactheripper can handle it without shelling out a lot of money?

the biggest turn off with mtr for me is the fact that you have to be so engaged in the ripdifferent forum every time a new title comes out and read through 2 pages of success/failure stories trying to figure out how to rip the dvd

I purchased VisualHub and think it is superb... what would be the best app to complement this for ripping dvds? (since it seems to be the only thing it doesn't do) - is MTR the one for this or is handbrake the daddy for just this initial step (i would like to trust VH with the encoding it just seems really slick and seems spot on with the results)...

Anyone know where to install the CSS libraries (GPL stuff) so the latest version of MactheRipper (14m) will work?

The website is down which had some instructions/link on what to do.

edit: eh nm. I found what I'm looking for in my downloads section.

MactheRipper is a great program, but the developer sucks. It's not a free program, and they'll probably never release a new, free version.

I tried FairMount, but it wasn't very intuitive. I should try it again, though. I'd love to replace MTR.

Run in Windows and use DVDFab 4. Its constantly updated to the latest copy protection and copies DVD to DVD. It lets you choose movie only, full disc, DVD-9 to two DVDs, DVD to Mpeg, Avi, Xvid, Dvix, H.264 or MP4.

Why use a program to get rid of the CSS, another to shrink, and then another to burn the iso??? This one is basically one step and allows for tons of options.

i use dvdfab hd decrypter (i think its currently 6.0.2 since its updated every other day it seems) but like the fact of using dvd srhink then imgburn because its free unlike the platinum or gold version of dvdfab... all within one application is nice but not worth $50 to me

Because you don't to spend all your time in Windows. :) I often decrypt and burn while I'm doing something else in OS/X. (

Plus I only use 2 programs. MTR and DVD2OnX2. You have to manually swap out the DVD you're backing up for a blank one anyway during the whole process so switching programs isn't much of a pain.

I've used MTR for months now with great results. I even paid the $50. Now that I need the newer version, I find that it's an order of magnitude more complicated to get and install. For the previous version, I sent my donation in and got a link. Using the link I downloaded the program, and used it. That's it. Now to get a new version I need to write my email in exactly the right way, with the right subject line... And I have to have "CSS libraries" on my Mac, and still more complications just to get the update. I'm sure I could figure this out, but I don't want to have to study a manual every time I want a newer version. What are CSS libraries? Will Handbrake burn to DVDs that will play on regular DVD players? Ripping in Windows using Parallels is interesting... thanks for that suggestion.

Yeah, the MTR project has really failed the entire Mac community with their utterly ridiculous way of masquerading the app as freeware, violation of the GPL, and the whole distribution system.

It'd be nice to see some other skilled developers pick up a similar cause, but not be douchebags about the whole thing (to put it mildly).

The GPL licence allows charging of a fee for all licenced items. There is nothing in the GPL that states that the product must be free just because it uses GPL code. All they have to do is offer the source code for download.

I should have mentioned it's also the fact that they do not release their source code.

Well, they're getting around it by technically not selling it. MTR is free. But if you pay them, they'll give you access to their current beta.

It's a technicality, but probably what allows them to do it. Not that I'm defending them. I think it's ridiculous. I remember emailing them because I was interested in getting the 'new' version. I thought they'd ask ten, maybe twenty bucks tops. But forty??? For a supposedly free program? No thanks.

Put in the DVD.
If DISC RCE says clear, don't worry about it. If it isn't, set the drop-down menu to match.
Select whichever regions you may possibly ever want to play on.
Do a FULL EXTRACTION
Wait.
Quit MTR.
Use Toast or whatever to do a full copy or the main item only.

The free Mac 2.6.6 is easily Googled.

i am at this stage in my dvd collection ripping. now i just have to wait for an ATV update allowing you to stream .vob and i'll be set. hopefully this happens sooner than later. there really isn't any good hardware out there that does this. it seems like the next step in the process.
