Glad to see I’m not the only one a little confused by MagSafe. Is there some feature similar to the original MagSafe with Mac portables? What’s the “safe”?

The original meaning of "safe" for laptops was that you could trip over the cord and it would just quickly detach from your MacBook without dragging it to the floor. Not really sure what it means now on the phone, other than they just wanted to reuse the brand name.

I'm hoping for a MagSafe car mount that is also a qi charger. The one from Belkin shown in the Keynote was a mount only.

Question: can you stick the iPhone 12 to the fridge, just like any other fridge magnet??

I am excited about MagSafe but am trying to understand why I should pay a lot of extra money for a case that magnetically attaches. I hardly ever take my case off, and snap-on cases work totally fine. I think it only makes sense to spring for MagSafe if you routinely like to take your case off.

Then don't buy it!

Things like this are like 1000 thread count sheets. You can buy cheap sheets if you like; you can mock people who buy $100 sheets rather than $15 sheets. But if you're doing that mocking without having actually TRIED the product, that maybe says something more about you than the product?

The world is full of products that cost a little more -- but ARE actually nicer.
It's also full of people who think it's better to insist, sight unseen, that superiority is impossible than to actually try anything new.

Some people are willing to pay a little more for a nicer product. That's why we have choices.

How many tons of rare earth metals will this Apple stunt use up during the next years and will land on landfills later?

VERY VERY little compared to the amount of rare earths used in large motors, eg cars. A large wind turbine can use up to two tons of rare earth magnets.
There is this thing called arithmetic...

But of course when you are virtue signalling, what do numbers matter?

Are they selling screen protectors?
Don't see why not they offer an official Otterbox screen protector for all other smartphones. Though as much as I love Otterbox I never bother with their screen protectors, they are way overpriced IMO, just buy your typical tempered glass screen protectors online or at a store near you. I've been doing this for a long time and have never broken a screen.

well thats rubbish the cases seem to be US only... can't see them on the uk site

The reason I’m excited by it is that

a) My phone will charge wirelessly every time without the risk of slight misalignment

b) I can use the wallet AND still wirelessly charge with minimal effort

c) I can get rid of my big, clunky vent clip phone holder in my car.

For me, that’s what makes it worth the extra few dollars, but that’s just my use case. Ymmv

All true for the magsafe feature in the phone itself and accessories like the magnetic charger. It's the magnetic cases that I'm wondering about. I am pretty sure if you get a regular non-magnetic case, the magnet in the phone will still work through that case to accessories that you attach.

You mad bro? That's a pretty harsh reply to someone who did not mock anything, just raised a simple question.

Perhaps I am confused. If the magnet works through the case, why have magsafe cases for iphone 12s?

I ordered both the Apple Silicone Case and the Otterbox Aneu Case (though I find their blue a little weird, will have to see it in person). I also ordered this super cheapy off eBay for $6.99.

I've actually usually rocked cases from eBay and been pretty happy with them, but I am anxious to find a good qi wireless car charger with MagSafe support, so I'll probably eventually want a case with real MagSafe.

There are already tons of decent cases on eBay for less than $15. If it weren't for MagSafe, I wouldn't even be considering a genuine case. I have a feeling I'll end up returning the cases I ordered from Apple and just use the clear eBay case until the MagSafe ecosystem develops more and then I'll get whatever good option is available then. I wonder if there will be knockoff products that work well with MagSafe or if Apple has it pretty well patented to prevent this?

Because the magnetic force gets less with distance. It'll be interesting to see if the force is enough to provide basic alignment with non MagSafe cases, but maybe not enough to keep the puck attached when the phone is picked up. That might actually be the ideal situation for a lot of people.

I want to see a MagSafe wallet like case similar to Apple's but with at least 2 pockets. Anybody making those?
Just one pocket is not enough. I've got a case with two pockets at the moment and it allows me keep my wallet in the bag as I very rarely need it.

Situation: AirPower fails because physics.

Engineering: "Maybe we can fix everything with magnets."

Marketing: "Whoa!"

Apple. Inspired by dank 4chan memes.

"Magnets."

Insane Clown Posse will be proud of this.

I just wish that consumers would refuse to pay these crazy high prices for cases.

I refuse to pay these crazy high prices for phone repairs, that's why I use cases.

I had an Otterbox Symmetry on my iPhone XS for two years and the case still looks almost as good as new. So hard-wearing! Unlike phone surfaces. My best case ever, for US$35 in a carrier store, fully protected a US$1257 phone against any damage. Pristine phone at the end of the two years.
