This is why I prefer to use 'deep sleep' mode instead of the default sleep mode Macs ship with. I guess it is similar to the deepsleep app but I just use Terminal to go in and enable it whenever I am going to be on the go. At home I switch it to quick sleep where it does instant sleep and instant awake.

Deep sleep mode is great as it saves the battery but there is a lag time from when you wake the Mac - about 30 seconds. Not much but still there. Instant mode is instant but it uses battery to keep the RAM powered.

I've been closing my MBP lid and putting in a laptop bag for almost a year. No problems whatsoever, but I also don't leave anything plugged in or use Bluetooth devices. By default my bluetooth devices won't wake the MBP from sleep.

One of the many mehsome things about OS X is that you can't choose between this or sleep - it's either or.

Most likely, Apple correctly assumed that most of their users wouldn't be able to get it into their heads - as is probably proven by the number of Windows-using technological illiterates who can't make the distinction, or aren't aware of the differences in the first place.

Since 10.5.7, I had this problem quite often. My MBP wouldn't go to sleep when I closed the lid. Sometimes it was after I unplugged a USB device, sometimes speakers, rarely just because it wanted to piss me off. I removed

/var/vm/sleepimage

A new one gets created automagically when you put the Mac to sleep again. Haven't had a problem since.

I have not had any problems with mine. Actually a couple of months ago I thought I turned my MBP off before a 15 hour flight from Atlanta, GA to Dubai. Well, it turned out that I had not turned it off and I just closed the lid. I was kind of worried but I opened the lid and it turned right on. I think I had only lost about 15-20% of the battery too.

I was impressed but I will make sure I get it to sleep next time!

Closing the lid = sleep.

Go to the advanced pane in bluetooth preferences and turn off the ability for your bluetooth devices to wake the computer.

Thanks everyone! You know, I DO have my bluetooth turned on for my mouse, that could be the culprit. hmmmm....
I am NOT just closing the lid and putting in my bag anymore. I will try that app that was suggested. Usually, the laptop is only in my bad for a few hours, transporting from work, errands then home. I don't leave it in all day.
Anyways, thank you again

Closing the lid = sleep.

I know...

I hit the shut down and was closing it up quick because they were giving the final boarding call and I was trying to finish up a project while waiting. I thought that it had completed its shut down so I closed the lid and threw it in my bag. When I got to the hotel at the other end I noticed that it had not shut down. I think what caused it to hang up was iTunes was not quitting. I got a pop-up message asking if I wanted to end it or not.

The only times I shut it down is when I am flying or if I am going to be transporting it for about 4 hours or more. If I am just going to a friends house or work or something I never do.

Thanks for attempting to clarify it for me though! ;)

Turn it off before putting in the bag? Not rocket science, common sense.

Sometimes you don't have the patience (or time) to wait for the full sleep, so you throw it in your bag and run only to find your computer didn't sleep. Nothing to do with common sense.

I got fed up with having to wait 30 seconds for my MacBook to go to sleep so I installed SmartSleep, which is pretty much instantaneous. The difference is that it just keeps your RAM powered instead of copying it to the hard drive. If your battery is below 5% then it will hibernate (copy your RAM's content to the hard drive) instead of sleeping. I haven't had any problems with it so far.

I don't know if this is a fix or not, but those of you having problems may want to check it out.

Apple just (well, on 528) released a firmware update for MBP fans.
Testing now, but won't be able to tell for real until I get home and I know I can reproduce the problem.

One more thing.

I'm not able to connect via ssh or VNC to the "sleeping" machine. Also when you hard reboot the machine it looks like it's trying to pick up from the sleep image, fails, and then goes to a standard boot.

I've noticed that too.
Well, limited testing has given me a new issue.
Now it'll go to sleep, but won't wake up.

I always close the lid on my Pro, but before I put it into a bag, I make sure the front light is pulsating. Just a tip.

Same Problem - just last 2 weeks

I have exactly the same problem, and it is recent. I always have left work by just closing the lid and putting it in the case. When I got home, I just opened it up and it woke from sleep where I left it off.

Not any more! It won't go to sleep properly. The white light on the front goes on, but the screen backlight doesn't go off! And it doesn't go to sleep properly! It is hot to the touch and will not start up at home! I have to do a forced (hold power-off button for several seconds) power-off to get it to restart.

It is a MacBookPro4,1 - just before the unibody came out. It has ALL the system updates, including the fan speed download.

Has anyone tried going to the Genius Bar yet?

I have a Macbook Pro Unibody and for the 3rd time, I have taken my laptop out of my bag and it is HOT as blazes! I eject all discs/hard drives and unplug all cords and close the lid properly ( I do it everyday when leaving work) well, today again it is super hot and even heats up the inside of my laptop bag! There are no programs running, but it will not wake up from sleep either. I have to force shut it down.

15" 2.53gHz Unibody running 10.5.7

any ideas what could cause this?

Likely solution: Ethernet port not enabled

From MacFixit
OK, so I found this post at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2005687&tstart=0
It says to enable your ethernet port, even if you don't need it...

It worked!!!!!

Make sure you read it exactly has stated:

To re-enable the Ethernet port settings:
1. Open System Preferences > Network
2-1. If you see your Ethernet port in your list of network ports (on the left-side of the window) and it says "Inactive," activate the port by clicking the gear wheel icon and selecting "Make Service Active." Click "Apply."
2-2. If you do not see your Ethernet port in your list of network ports (on the left-side of the window), click the "+" button in the bottom-left corner.
3. In the "Interface" drop-down menu, select "Ethernet."
4. Enter a name and select "Create." You should see your new Ethernet connection appear.
5. Click "Apply."
Note: If you are having this issue and your Ethernet port is already enabled, try disabling it (using the gear wheel icon menu > "Make Service Inactive"). Log out or restart your Mac, then enable it. Be sure to "Apply" your changes.
Test your MacBook or MacBook Pro by closing the clamshell. Be sure to try this twice as most reports point to the second attempt at sleep as being the culprit for the freeze. If it does not work, try resetting your Mac and test again.
