You can always get it from your backup, right....?

    Yeah but

I tried the drag and drop and it keeps saying that it can not be opened as it is in the trash. And my prompts do not show a "put back".

In the core of a black hole.
I just bought a Mac Mini 2012, from a PB 10.5.8, this is new to me, cheers simsaladimbamba.

What OS, and might I ask what kind of a file, does it belong to the system for instance.

Sounds like you're double-clicking, not dragging. What OS are you on? Put Back was introduced in 10.6. It's not always there, though, depending on the original location of the file.

Unless I am missing something the reason you cannot open the file is because it is still in the trash folder. Simply drag it from the trash to your desktop. Then double-click the file and it will open.
