"CIRP bases its findings on its September 2015 survey of US Apple customers. CIRP samples 500 customers that purchased an Apple product (iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer) in the preceding quarter."

So they sample 500 people buying Apple products in the three months prior. This means absolutely nothing as far as what they are claiming as a result. The samplesize is in no way big enough to conclude anything and obviously at the time take the iPhone 6 comes up on top.

Sure, it's nice BS for Apple fanboys to throw around but absolutely has no validity in any way and frankly just is your average Apple spun drivel. It's meaningless and certainly does not prove or establish anything

You seem to have quite hard feelings for Apple and Apple customers.

What do you get out of being on a site dedicated to Apple and Apple users?

It has to with the 2 year contracts that a lot of people are on. The 5 came out 3 years ago so they have been replaced in the last few months by the 6. In the next few months we will see the 5C and the 5S being replaced by the 6S.

I understand that, sure. But where did those replaced iPhones go? Most of them, I believe, are still fully functional (mine and many of my friends' definitely are). Some were acquired second hand, and some have already undergone battery changes. But they are still working fine, and many a casual user still gets a lot of value from them.

And where are they? Did they get shipped off to other countries? Did they get gutted for parts? Did they get refurbished into iPhone 5Cs? what?

Most phones that are traded in are sent to other countries

Excellent question.

I ask myself that of every Apple basher that comes around this or other Apple related sites. And what puzzles me more is that neither I nor my friends and acquaintances that like and use Apple products go around to, say, Samsung, LG, or HTC sites bashing their products. Frankly, who cares about other vendors? I am amazed that this logic doesn't apply to all Android loving people out there.

Funny story. I got booted out of a rabid Blackberry fansite once when I was awakening from BlackBerry cultist dogma, and I couldn't be happier about it. It was the biggest favour they ever did me. But, having been booted out of one, I didn't seek out another. I just left BlackBerry sites behind. Sure I stop by to enjoy the angst and the drama and have a good laugh.

If you don't use a product, don't go bashing it at enthusiast sites. It's not going to convince anyone of anything.

I have plenty of Apple products yet I am the first to criticise Apple for some of it's practices and what I consider to be some poor products. I absolutely defend the right of others to criticise also.

I am staggered that Americans would seek to stifle criticism and debate or is your democracy nothing more than a veneer? What on earth is the point of a forum that is self-congratulatory, what purpose does it serve? Surely we all benefit if we keep these companies on their commercial toes.

Since all iPhones have a unique serial number and since they all have to fairly regularly connect to iTunes to update their Apps (for many users at least one App updates every couple of days), doesn't Apple have an actual exact number? And they would know every device and its model basically perfectly, right?

Those would be the numbers I'd like to see.

Ah, but that's quite different from what we were discussing, I believe. I also have a lot of Apple products, and eventually will complain about something that could/should be better/different, or about something that doesn't work or works in a subpar manner.

Criticism of that sort is always welcome, I believe. What I don't think is productive is people who do no have anything to do with the Apple ecosystem, people who never used Apple products for more than the allotted 3 minutes in an Apple store—if that much!—and criticize Apple because it's not their preferred brand. That kind of rant, I believe, is not productive at all, neither for the criticizes, nor for people who like the products and are submitted to it.

Criticism from people who know what they're talking about is always welcome, in my book.

Thank you Chinese Labour-force.

And Taiwanese. And American. And European. And whatever labor force involved in the design-assembly-production-shipment-wholesale-delivery-sale/customer-delivery (this without including local customer support, local marketing, local lawyers etc.)

You know, production of a product does not work in a way that Mr. Cook gives an order, and two days later chinese produce it, and somehow they end up in a store. Thousands of people, from different countries are involved to build/deliver/market any single piece that’s inside an iPhone, and they do it voluntarily, for a trade of labor-salary that they believe decent enough to accept. Production of a pencil that you used this morning is not different at all.

Where did all those iPhone 5 go? I'd expect 4Ss and older to be out of commission, but not the 5.
The 5 was the most issue-riddled and underwhelming iPhone Apple ever released, while the previously released 4s was a rock solid high-performance machine, which might explain things a little.

Your response is flawed as those 100 million Android phones are spread across many brands not just the one.

And that's exactly what I meant.

You say there is a "lack of individuality" in the US. But alas... not everyone has an iPhone.

There are plenty other phones from many manufacturers. At least half the smartphones in the US are a variety of Android phones.

Are we good now? ;)

Well CIRP obviously thought it was a big enough sample size. These are estimates anyway. They certainly couldn't COUNT every single iPhone in-use in the US.

So do you think their estimates are wrong?

They estimate there are 101 million iPhones in-use in the United States.

Is the actual number higher or lower?

I'd like to see the estimates from the Paulheu Research Firm ;)

Just imagine what happens when they release all new iPhone 7...with probable wireless charging, optical stabilization, ready for Apple Pencil.. etc.. After amazing 2 years with iPhone 6 - what a great phone btw - I am ready for iPhone Plus 7.

Interesting to see 5C and 5S holding so strong.

this reporting is before those of us on the S cycle with a 5S who were waiting for the craziness with the launch to die down so we could just walk in and pick up a 6S without the crowds could do so, just picked up 6S+ this week. I've gone from using a phone that was also a computer, to a computer that is also a phone. This phablet means I will never see any reason to get another iPad. I was already using my iPad 2 infrequently. Really no use for it now.
