How is thinking that something Apple does might not be successful detrimental to someone?
It’s only detrimental to their MR forum street cred as an attempted Apple analyst/prognosticator extraordinaire.

But some people don’t mind being proven wrong over and over and over again; why they keep going back to their same old crystal ball is somewhat of a puzzle though. You’d think they’d trade it in for a new one by now... it’s clearly defective :)

I'd love to know 1 month from now how many of those trial subscriptions will renew. Speaking of which I need to cancel mine before it renews.

By the way, I think Apple dropped the ball on allowing magazines that look like PDF scans, the experience is pretty bad. I think Apple should have pioneered a new format for smart devices, and force everyone to adapt it on the new platform to guarantee a consistent and pleasant experience.

I wonder how many subscribed to News+ thinking they could cancel their pricier WSJ subscription under the false impression that News+ would give them the same kind of access (it won't)

WSJ (and Nat Geo, and Popular *) were the ones that would interest me about this. Why do you say the WSJ access won't be the same? I'd like to know so I can decide if I even want to try it. Full access WSJ is what would make it worthwhile for me.

I tried digital magazines when they first appeared and hated the medium. A pdf on a tablet is a sterile, sensoryless experience. Even those which included interactivity and multimedia failed to create additional value. Indeed, even respectable titles like NatGeo replaced engaging storystelling with visual gimmicks akin to children's pop-up books.

As someone whose career included the preparation of printed periodicals, I've yet to see a digital book or magazine improve on its printed counterpart. A screen has its strengths. Reading is not one of them.

It is when they are wrong for the wrong reasons. Such as thinking that the iPhone X wouldn’t sell because Apple charged $1k for it, or that the Airpods would never take off. Just because.

Past a certain point, flooding the forum with hundreds of “Apple is doomed” responses simply isn’t adding anything of value to the discussion. And I suspect some people here are not interested in having a genuine conversation at all. They really only care for bashing Apple. Like some bitter and jilted ex-lover.

Let’s try explaining and understanding Apple’s successes for a change and give them credit where credit is due, rather than simply trying to explain them away.

How is that detrimental or harmful to someone who has those thoughts or opinions? It may be annoying to others, etc, but detrimental to the person in question?

Doesn’t it bother you that the service was announced it without the polish being there? I mean Kason Snell said he hopes the app gets a redesign at WWDC. I don’t think it’s a good look that Apple releases something and the first response from people is they can’t wait for a redesign. .

It bothers me in the sense that this is a true “if Steve Jobs were alive” thing. He was famously hard on his employees but it worked. He was picky as hell with the smallest details. That to me is Apple — I cautiously don’t say “was”. That’s missing here.

That said, the app does still have that kind of Apple simplicity and functionality that you’d expect. I do love the service and I don’t think it needs a complete redesign but instead, some adjustments and new features added over time.

I subscribe to Nat Geo for $20/year, and couldn’t find enough other publications that interested me to justify a switch to paying $120/year through Apple. That said, I’m hoping the “newspaper” category of the catalog will continue to grow.

(It also didn’t help the case for NEWS+ that I have free digital access to the majority of the same magazines with my public library card using the RBDigital iOS app.)

that is very very small number for Apple..most of them might be 'Trial subscriptions'...not even a Mil???? surprised...

How is access to 300 magazines for $10pm ‘useless’? It might not be well suited to you, but I can’t fathom how you consider it useless?
I can only speak for myself, but it's in the same way I don't even want a free trial. I don't read magazines, I don't care what people consider 'important news' be it national, international or even local.

Plus, my 16GB iPhone 6S has 10GB of storage taken by 'System' causing random apps to offload every day to make room for various app's cached data. I don't need another half baked app causing issues, taking space.

That's how News is useless to me.

A music subscription is relevant. A magazine subscription (of any kind) in 2019 is not.

Different demographics, if print media did not make money or was fading out, it would not have a space near checkout counters or its own section in many stores. Stores do not carry items that do not sell and make them a profit and arguable these companies would have folded a long time ago.

It may not be your or my thing, it is however someone else’s thing. AppleMusic is not my thing, that does not mean I need to insult its existence as others quite prefer it. ;)

‘Useless to me’ and ‘useless’ are two very different things. It’s like me saying injectable penicillin is useless, simply because I don’t suffer from diabetes.

This is publications last hurrah and final breath of hope before they all collapse.

This mantra has been sung since the original iPad was released and even before that multiple times over. I don’t like buying physical mags due to environmental reasons, I have always consumed my news via digital means. AppleNews+ Is not my thing though.

People said the same when Apple Music came out.

While I agree it is too early to tell, I would give it 60-90 days since launch to map any trajectory. I don’t understand why people need to knock it, if you don’t like it or not for you just don’t use it.

People these days have a narcissist mentality. The world revolves around me, only my needs matter. /s :p:D

You do realize you can delete the app right or most Apple developed default included apps. Are we complaining for the sake of it.

People really need to give the “if Steve Jobs we’re here/alive” mantra a rest, he had his way of running a business and others have theirs. He was the one who selected Tim Cook, don’t like something don’t buy, you have a choice. I am neither defending anyone in my statement. If every company in the world had a CEO like Jobs, this would be a boring world. Diversity of all facets matter, some are successful others not, it is what makes life interesting.

Why would anyone pay for news that can be easily accessed for free? That’s like selling bottled tap water.

The New York Times has just over 4 million subscribers. If Apple News+ gets only 10 million subscribers, it's worth if for NYT to sign on.

no, because NYT would get a miniscule amount of revenue from Apple News+ after the remaining 50% is divvied between all the publishers.
