Late last week, the news broke that Apple was removing "overtly sexual" applications from the App Store. The list of applications that have been removed have not only included novelty apps and adult themed slideshow apps, but also a number of games including Daisy Mae's Alien Buffet. This graph provided by AppShopper.com shows that on a typical day, about 100 apps are removed from the U.S. App Store. This includes forcible removals by Apple as well as instances where a developer has chosen to remove an application from sale.

On Wednesday, February 17th, however, this number shot up to 932 removals and peaked at nearly 4000 removals on Thursday, February 18th. The high number of removals has continued over the weekend as Apple continues to clear out these newly blocked apps. In speaking with Apple, ChilliFresh found out that over 5000 apps were affected, which corresponds to AppShopper's stats as of Saturday, though the higher than normal rate of removals seem to be continuing. This represents about 3% of the total number of apps in the App Store.

While the merit of Apple's new policy remains an ongoing debate, the new policy may slightly improve some of the clutter found in the App Store as the most prolific "sexy app" developer had published nearly 500 variants of their bikini photobooks.

for the better i think. If you really need that kind of stuff, your phone has the internet and can watch videos..you shouldn't really need an entire app😎

Interesting that Grindr is still there, seeing as I literally had actual sex with an actual human male using that app the other day...

Also, this is terrible, I'm an adult who can make my own decisions, etc. What with this and the internet filter I'm starting to feel the pressure of the nanny state.

If you want porn browse to a site. There are tons of sites made specifically for the iPhone.

There are a ton of useless apps in the AppStore and they just need to be rid of anyways.

What is this apple?? a fundamental Muslim revolution? Soon: all women pictured in applications must be covered from head to toe.

i'm curious whether this decision has anything to do with the fact that most of those app include copyright material. it's unfortunate (read: outrageous) that those that do not, such as "wobble iboobs", are being pulled.

because streaming flash websites works oh so well on the iphone right?

Finally. I feel a little disappointed every time I see one of those "porn" apps in the top 25, especially in the paid category. It's not hard to google porn if you want to find something, quicker than going on the app store, browsing, clicking on an app, putting in your password, downloading.

Lol, wouldn't be surprised if Grindr gets the axe. It's pretty high profile, would defintely cause a stir. And I would no longer have a reason to keep my iPhone!

I am sure the main reason has to be the demographic of users. I am sure the main users are teens. Your not cool in school these days if you don't have an iPod or iPhone lol. It is hard to restrict the usage to adults on the devices. I would say almost impossible. Parents don't monitor anything their kids do anymore. Besides you can't watch them 24/7 anyways.

More likely it has to do with the release of the iPad. Boobs on a iPhone screen are not nearly as in-your-face as on the iPad (here, too, size matters).

I'm a bit torn between my liberal tendencies toward freedom to do whatever one pleases as long as it doesn't harm any others, and my belief that Apple has taken a step in the direction of quality over quantity. Hmm. We'll have to see this pan out.

What I'd honestly rather see is a more critical comparison in the approval process. We tend to have many apps for virtually the same thing, and while UIs can appeal to different people, I can't help but wonder if it would push developers to innovate more if Apple started rejecting apps based on functional and aesthetic similarities.

Wow... I'm surprised by the types of comments...

Porn is horrible, it makes people do stupid things and is fundamentally taking advantage of our instincts to bang the other gender.

And people taking advantage of that by selling it? Go die in the streets.

Didn't I say specifically made for the iPhone. Did I mention Flash and why does Flash come back into play? I am thinking that is all Flash is good for anymore on sites. That is probably Flashes main uses anymore on the net.

A bit far.

Hang on a second - Apple decides to pull apps from it's store, so this is linked to a "Muslim revolution"????????? 😕

Everybody has sex (hopefully) I dont know why we hide from it. Its responsible for the very existence of everybody on this forum. Native iPhone porn apps would sell through the roof. I wonder if adult magazines will be a part of the ipad magazine push. The fact that playboy still has an app in the app store says a lot. I dont care what anyone says, those pictures are overtly sexual.

P.S. great 1990's video game reference.

Pretty harmless apps, but they do not belong on the App store for everybody. I think there needs to be another resource for those materials.

I don't need or want them, but hey, even perverts prefer to travel light. 😀

I wonder if they could link some sort of Age verification to your iTunes account. That could maybe sort of adult specific Apps from other Apps for purchase.

In all reality blocking Adult content in App forms doesn't stop adult content from being viewed on the devices anyways. Apps just make it easier 😀 LOL
