I don't want a judgment on useless apps myself. I just want to see software producers be limited on creating similar apps. I don't want to see one basic template with 50 different skins on it, essentially to have 50 different apps.

I think anyone who wants to make a measurement conversion app should be able to do it. I just don't want one guy making an app that does US measurement, english measurement, another for metric system etc... I want to see more consolidation and less cloning.

Exactly

they should just do good business, and not try to tell us how to live our lives. The libertarian in me is totally outraged.

They do good business. Hence, their success. Hence, content providers wanting to be a part of their business. Apple's "business" is the envy of the industry.

Apple doesn't tell you how to "live your life", LOL. You can fap to anything you like, you can go out and buy a netbook, eat cheeseburgers all day, hell - you can even build a hackintosh.

Vote with your wallet. Don't buy Apple products. But please, spare us the whine. THERE IS NO moral aspect to this.

"Room" is not a problem, as the App Store is not your local Best Buy. As for low purchases, I disagree. Example: I am thinking of one day creating a Reference App for firefighters. I would have to market it in fire magazines, trade shows, etc, but even still my market would be a small niche of course. First they would have to have an iPhone and second they would have to want my app, so if I only could sell a couple 1000 downloads, by your plan my app would get nixed right?

And remember also that in order to have your app on the store you signed up and paid apple money for the developer license. I would be a little snarked if they pulled it later because it was only generating xxx in sales, that's my problem, not theirs.

I'm not against pulling apps for content per-se, as long as the rules for what is acceptable content don't change too radically from when you sign up, give them money and start working within the guidelines, at that point it gets a little unfair.

so "Apple Modifies iPhone SDK to Allow Sweepstakes Applications", does this mean more junk apps to come.......

Good job, Apple! Now, remove ALL of those fart apps, and we are back in business.

Apple isn't your average company. They have always stood as at the pinnacle. Porn, however, is filth. It crawls in the mud. There is just no way you will ever see them standing together.

I imagine, being a company, they toyed with the idea, or like any good company, did the numbers. But at the end of the day, they probably felt it was a market they could do without. They might have felt it would have invariably hurt the Apple brand (think overzealous reporter runs leading story).

Whatever the reason, it was an excellent decision. Bookmark your porn sites and use Safari. Not enough porn for you? TFB. Just because they're being sensible, doesn't mean they're [insert derogatory religious comment here].

Now they just need to put limits on duplicate apps (like rolling out 54 apps from the same developer that do pretty much the same thing).

do you know what is the yearly revenue for the porn industry? i think you should probably do some recalculating.

The iPhone, and any other smartphone for that matter,
is really not the ideal porn delivery tool.

The screen is way too small!!!
Too much panning and zooming!
Which makes it hard to use your hands for other more important things.

I mean, I guess smartphones are ok in a pinch,
but come on people let's get real here....
You really need a big high res screen,
for a real quality porn experience.

Further, the user input method needs to leaves one or more hands free.
Muli-touch at this point should not be on the computer.

The Internet, and syncing photos to your iDevice is free.
If your paying for a porn app then your a tool anyway.

Sorry to hear about the Daisy Mae shootem up App though.

Its amazing the prudishness amongst people willing to give up all forms of expression and allow their lives to be controlled by others.

If an app is useless no one will download it and it won't show up on popular lists, if it does, its obviously of value to someone. This is just plain blatant censorship and nothing less.

The more I seem from Apple of late - Flash, and this, etc... as much as I like some of their products, its definitely making me consider moving away and no longer recommending anyone buy Macs, etc cause they should just do good business, and not try to tell us how to live our lives. The libertarian in me is totally outraged.

I know, it's kind of blowing my mind how quickly these people are falling in line with Apple's heavy handed tactics. Whatever happened to simply ignoring that which you don't want? I couldn't care less if there's pseudo-porn in the app store. It doesn't affect my life at all. But I don't care if someone else wants to get it. It's not my place to dictate what someone else should be able to view. It would require a very large sense of entitlement of moral authority to think otherwise.

So much for being a progressive company. This is what we get when we buy into a closed system. The Big Brother over it gets to decided everything we can or can't do.

As for what others have said about that if someone wants porn, they can open a browser. Well, yeah. That could be applied to nearly everything in the app store. But apps make things easier. Why can't someone view a set of breasts with ease if they please?

I hope the people in this forum never visit Paris. They'd fall over in shock from the blatant sexuality.

Android will open their... arms to these kinds of apps! So will Windows 7 Mobile...
Let them experience that wonderful world... and any users whom would miss these apps are more than welcome to cross the floor to them... CIAO!
:D

Wow... I'm surprised by the types of comments...

Porn is horrible, it makes people do stupid things and is fundamentally taking advantage of our instincts to bang the other gender.

And people taking advantage of that by selling it? Go die in the streets.

I'd just like to put in my vote as a normal human being. Maybe it'll help balance out all the repressed soccer moms on this forum.

There is nothing wrong with naked human beings. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the human race depends on people getting together and touching each other's genitalia. It's so sad to see all these 'pornography is filth!' comments on here. I can't image what these people's personal lives are like. You've become the old men yelling at the kids about your lawn. You realize that, right?

The internet seems to get along fine while including every extreme kind of pornography imaginable. There's no reason Apple can't do the same.

Here's hoping competing stores capitalize on the porn industry Apple is so afraid of.

Maybe Apple just doesn't want to associate itself with these types of apps. It may be less about censorship/big brother and more about the label. I'm sure to some extent Apple's image is a part of this decision.

I'm glad Apple is doing this. If anyone here is against this I suggest that you find something else to fulfill your personal pleasures. :D

It's about time, I was getting tired of seeing those "Shake to remove clothes" apps all over the top apps section. I want to see useful things, Safari's designed for things like that.

Are you sure that it is not going to be, say, 90% of all iPhone users? Did not you see the ratings for these apps?

I can search for the word photography, looking for a camera app, and I get soft porn apps, bikinis, strip poker, boobs shots, etc,...
So when a 15 year old kid wants an app for her iPhone and gets App search results like those mentioned, well it's not the kind of quality environment/Apple experience for her really is it?

The Playboy app is still in the store. Hooters still have apps in the store. It's the same as when Trent Reznor went on his rant and got his app approved. If you've got a big name, your app isn't going anywhere.

I don't know why people keep calling these apps "porn" apps. They were just pictures or characters of people in scantly clad outfits, hardly considered "porn". If you do consider it porn, then this society is very puritanical and closed.

I found the apps useless too and I was mad that all I saw in the top downloads were these apps, but I don't think removing them all is the answer. It had to be useful to a majority of the iphone population to be in the top downloads lists. I think the answer should be a redesign of the App store. With more and more apps appearing, the current App's store is not well suited for it.

Is this the beginning of the unraveling of App Store?

It looks to me that this might be a harbinger of things to come. Perhaps this whole idea of one corporation policing people activities is not so great. Sure, there is a contract: by buying our phone you agree to use it only the way we approve. Legal? Yes. Sensible? I am not sure.

Apple is concerned about its own image. Since these apps are at the top of the rating charts what does it says about Apple customers, Apple products and Apple itself?

This does not answer my question. As I understand, these apps are popular. Are you sure that 90% of current iPhone users are not going to switch to a different phone to maintain their "experience" the way like it?

This is not censorship. Do yourself a favor and find out what a word means before you toss it around.
censor
• noun an official who examines material that is to be published and suppresses parts considered offensive or a threat to security.

• verb suppress or remove unacceptable parts of (a book, film, etc.).

— DERIVATIVES censorship noun.

Tuaw

A dude over at TUAW has spoken to Apple with the following commandments spoken on 'girlie' apps...
"I have spoken with Apple, and the following are the new rules:
1. No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either)
2. No images of men in bikinis! (I didn't ask about Ice Skating tights for men)
3. No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry)
4. No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs
5. No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex – all banned
6. Nothing that can be sexually arousing!!
7. No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content (not sure how Playboy is still in the store, but ...)"

They forgot the there is at least one game I found where the 3D chick in the game preview screen shots show 'up-skirt' angles for all those adolescent boys...
Bad taste, but I guess they sell em..
