I've been reading through this thread for a while now.

I've got an iMac 21.5" i3 3.2Ghz with the HD 5670 (Mobility HD 5730).
I play games in bootcamp so I naturally want to over clock my GPU since it's the bottleneck in my gaming.

I cannot get it to over clock. I've tried the unofficial unlock in MSI Afterbuner 2.0. When I apply the overclock, it just reverts back to the default values. This happens with the drivers supplied in bootcamp 3.1 and catalysts 10.8.

What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your time, I appreciate it :)

Tom.

If you do a brief google search (I believe it's also been stated in this thread) you have to enable the unofficial overclocking under the .cfg file in msi afterburner's folder (if you're not sure where this is just right click on the shortcut that is installed on your desktop and click find file location).

Once located, you have to give yourself permission to change the file (click on properties and it's under the 'security' tab). Default for me is that I never have permission to change the file. Then go down to enable unofficial overclocking and change the '0' to '1'.

If you've already done that, I would try uninstalling the drivers in device manager, rebooting, and installing the 10.8 catalyst Mobility drivers on ati's website ... the re-running afterburner.

Hope this helps.

Hi there,
I already enabled unofficial overclocking through the .cfg file. My problem was it wasn't applying the over clocking. I tried many drivers.

I found the problem, I was using an old MSI Afterburner program, 1.1. I'm now on 1.6 and it just works :D

Thanks for your help tho.
Tom

Updated to the new 2.0 Afterburner. Having the same problem as before (afterburner not setting the clocks, even with unofficial oc enabled)

Anyone else?

Hmm maybe a dumb question, but is there any downside to pumping up the fans? Over time can having the fans going at a high RPM wear them out alot faster or something?

High RPM? Probably, but the fans already spin at an incredibly slow rate -- ~1000 RPM stock, and that's on an 09 model.

Hi,

I am uploading various benchmarks and tests to http://www.youtube.com/user/itunesn00b

All running the 725 and 1075 overclock.

I have uploaded:

Crysis "Native"
Crysis "1080p"

Call of Duty: Black Ops "Native"
Call of Duty: Black Ops "1080p"

---------------------

Tonight I will try and get the following up:

COD MW2 "Native"
COD MW2 "1080p"

BF2MC2 "Native"
BF2MC2 "1080p"

Half Life 2 "Fake Faktory mod 10" "Native"
Half Life 2 "Fake Faktory mod 10" "1080p"

In case others are wondering what the OC can do for them.

Further testing, running the 725 and 1075 overclock.

Mass Effect 2
Resident Evil 5
Just Cause 2
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit
S.T.A.L.K.E.R Call of Priypat

I have a mix of tests, 1080p and 1440p

http://www.youtube.com/user/itunesn00b

The general message stays the same. With a small overclock the i7 2010 iMac is capable of playing all games at 1080p, and a fair few at 1440p.

I am now edititing the following:

Metro 2033
Mirrors Edge
Batman Arkam Asylum.

Once they are done I'll leave the channel alone, but figure that should be enough to give a picture of what the overclock will provide versus your own fps if you run standard clocks.

Despite extended playtime I have not had the GPU over 63 Degrees C.

Hello,

After the positive messages (Thanks everyone!) I have continued to update the iMac gaming channel.

I have added the following games:

- Hawx 2 [With/without DX11 tessellation]
- DeadSpace
- DeadSpace2
- Battlefield Bad Company 2 [Multiplayer 1080p as requested]
- Bulletstorm 1080p and 1440p [WHAT A GREAT GAME!!]

You can find these and more at:

http://www.youtube.com/user/itunesn00b

And yes, as soon as steam allows it, I will be testing Crysis 2.

All games at 750/1075 OC.

I imagine DX11 (when released) will kill the iMac, but it looks very nice for a DX9 console port.

have you done this?

- Install Windows 7 x64
- Install Bootcamp drivers
- REBOOT PC
- Device Manager->Display-> "Uninstall Device Drivers & DELETE files"
- REBOOT PC: (If you haven't selected the option to delete the files, it will autoinstall bootcamp ATI drivers again...)
- Install ATI Mobility drivers 10.80
- REBOOT PC

i had the same problem after this it was working perfectly.

thanks a lot guy finnally got everything running withou any previous knowledge,(after a complete windows reinstal), you guys were a lot of help.;)

i now can finnally run The Witcher at high settings without to much of a hazzle.:D

Can you someone please tell me where to get the 10.8 driver. I went to the amd website. http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx#1

but I dont think that the right one.

Agreed.

I suggest:

- Install Windows 7 x64
- Install Bootcamp drivers
- REBOOT PC
- Device Manager->Display-> "Uninstall Device Drivers & DELETE files"
- REBOOT PC: (If you haven't selected the option to delete the files, it will autoinstall bootcamp ATI drivers again...)
- Install ATI Mobility drivers 10.80
- REBOOT PC

That worked for me, but you could also mess around with driver cleaners etc.

In device manager I only see display adapters. Is this right? when I uninstalled it I couldnt get full screen resolution. And can you please please link me to the correct driver because I cannot find it on the amd website.

I used the custom 10.11e drivers posted on Guru3d, which I can't find anymore, but now I just use the Bootcamp drivers and overclock with MSI Afterburner.

I get pretty similar FPS rates on my 2009 i5 Quad iMac.

And n a side-note: Crysis 2 is not a console port...it was just developed with pc and consoles in mind.

The 4850 in your machine is very similar to the 5850, especially at 1080p. Have you tried Native? I will be uploading some film of that soon, at 1440p I get 20-30fps. How does your machine do on that setting?

On the console port issue, there is a good article here:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-tech-comparison-crysis2

I also have the xbox 360 version of the game, and must take this oppertunity to publically appologise to Crytek for calling the game a port.

It looks DRASTICALLY better on PC, and they have optimized the code so well that even an iMac owner can play the game at good FPS. It is a shame the DX11 patch is a few months away, but Crytek need to make money.

What they achieved on console has blown me away. The level of optimization on PC has blown me away.

I love the game and think they did a great job.

Sorry for the OT, but I regret saying it was a console port and believe in putting your hand up when you know you were wrong.

Anyway, great to hear the 4850 serves you well, lets hope I can say the same on my 5850 when the 6850 starts rolling Q4 on the new iMac!

So all in all .. do you think current 27" iMac with Radeon 5750 has beat game console (ps3/xbox360) in terms of gaming performance?

Hi,

I own the PS3, Xbox360 and iMac27". The iMac is far better than the consoles for multiformat games. Better resolution, better textures, better frame rates.

I have played Crysis 2 on xbox 360 and iMac extensivly. The leap in quality between the two is outstanding.

With all that said, I'd never buy an iMac for gaming, for me it is just a passing fad whilst I save up for a gaming PC with minidisplay compatability that can use the 27" IPS as a screen.

We needed the imac for some productivity apps, but for gaming it does not offer great value for money.

Playing Halflife2 fakefactory 10 at 2560x1440 was just an amazing experience, as is Crysis 2. I prefer 20-30fps at uber high resolution for Single Player, and then 30-40fps at 1080p for multiplayer

Yeah .. Mac computers rarely used as gaming platform. They are designed to be a productive computers. But if an iMac can game better than current gen game consoles, i think that's amazing.

Consider it a bonus, you know, a $300 bonus for console substitute (although iMac obviously can't play exclusive titles for console). But, you get awesome $2000 productive and virus free PC, which also play game better than console on 1080p. lol

Thanks for sharing your info, i'm heading toward iMac. I sold my Mac Mini and prepare to shake every $$$ on my wallet for 2011 iMac

That was exacly my thoughts, plus you get a 27" screen. I got my iMac at a very good price and when I looked at the price of a 30" screen the price wasn't that bad.

I am now waiting for a mini display compatible GPU that will be able to pump 2560x1440 visuals at max settings. If purchasing today I would buy two ATI 6850's flash them to 6870 and run that.

I did try native and it was about 18 to 30 FPS. On normal clock speeds. When I over-clock it from 500MHz to 590MHz core clock, and the Memory clock from 850MHz to 1100MHz i get around 25 to 35 FPS.
In my opinion its still a bit to laggy to play properly.

Anyway, great to hear the 4850 serves you well, lets hope I can say the same on my 5850 when the 6850 starts rolling Q4 on the new iMac!
Is it because you think the iMac wont come out before then, or do you not intend to buy one before that time?

So all in all .. do you think current 27" iMac with Radeon 5750 has beat game console (ps3/xbox360) in terms of gaming performance?
By far.

Gaming consoles barely are able to push out 40-50fps while rendering their games at 960x540 resolution.

1100 MHz on the GPU memory! You got style! :) I haven't the nerve to go over 1100Mhz. Upping the memory Mhz has the bigger effect on increased bandwidth, but I don't know what the memory cooling is like and that concerns me.

For me if I run 800/1100 the machine gets display drivers crashes to desktop, I couldn't tell you 100% but I have a feeling that this is actually voltage related, as I don't know if the iMac is supply much of a buffer on the rail for the GPU. In today's "Green IT" I would expect them to have reduced the powersupply in line with the lower needs of a standard clocked 5850m.

Q4 as per speculation for new iMac, but considering the 4850m and then 5850m in 27" models, my bet is that the new iMac has a 6850m. I'd be delighted if Apple proved me wrong with a better card.

Your FPS at native are also very similar to mine. Useful info, and again shows that the 5850 with DDR5 and 128Bit Bus performs very similar to the 4850m with 256Bit Bus, in the real world. I had expected the 5850 to have maybe 10% better FPS, if you see the link in my Sig you can compare your results to many games I have benchmarked. It sounds like you get exactly the same.

COD games to the side (As they manage 60fps)

It seems to be the "Target" is 1280 x 720 at 30FPS.

The reality is often a lower resolution upscaled. The 360 seems to fair best with achieving true 720p, with titles like Crysis being less than 720p on PS3. There are also sub 720p games on 360 too, like Halo3.

The problem is that games now are pushing too hard and we dips down in 20-20fps which it awful.

So playing something like NFS Hot Pursuit on console at 30fps and then iMac at 60fps 1080p is like a NEW WORLD! :=)

See here for the proof:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plHuRB5rHWU

Classic example of a game I tried on console and my iMac and actually one of the motivations behind my Youtube channel, so show iMac owners they actually have quite a capable games machine!

COD games to the side (As they manage 60fps)

Well I'd love to share a video I saw a while back that compared fps between xbox and ps3 black ops, where it showed ps3 hovering around 40-45fps and xbox hovering at 45-50fps, but I doubt I could find it. I am not sure how older cod games perform.

Why thank you, :D

I have to say i didn't get any crashes whatsoever. The Temp. was rising up to around 80° Celsius after a while though and if i over-clock the Core Clock to 600MHz ore more i get graphical glitches...especially around 650MHz they become baaaad...

Also you might want to know that I am running my GPU with old drivers from July 2010 that are belong to HD 4850, not mobility. I found them to be slightly better than the current Mobility drivers.
