ok i got macfan64.exe can someone please dumb down how to navigate in cmd to set the fan speeds...

Sure.

1.) Download Macfan from here http://sourceforge.net/projects/macfan/files/MacFan 0.65/MacFan0_65.zip/download

2.) Extract the MacFan0_65.zip file to C:\MacFan0_65

HINT: You might find that the folder "MacFan0_65" contains a sub folder called "MacFan0_65" Just copy all the files into the fist MacFan0_65 folder and delete the sub folder.

You now have a folder called "MacFan0_65" located on C:\ with the MacFanx64.exe file in it.

3.) Open "Notepad" and copy the following into it:

"C:\MacFan0_65\MacFanx64.exe" 2500 2500 1800

Save the Notepad file to your desktop as "MacFan.cmd" YOU MUST CHANGE "SAVE AS TYPE" TO ALL FILES Otherwise it will just be a txt file...

4.) Right click the "MacFan.cmd" file on your desktop and select "Run As Adminstrator"

You should now experience two things:

- The fan noise will increase!
- You should see a black box with information that it is setting the fan speeds.

You can change the 2500 2500 1800 numbers to your own preference, within the max speeds allowed. These are fast though.

I'm not sure I can dumb it down too much more without making a script to unpack the files and make you a CMD file. Hopefully this is enough to help.

Please do consider that Overclocking your machine is not without risk, and if you are struggling with the basics this means your risk profile for making a mistake and damaging the iMac is higher. I say this as friendly advice. Overclocking is not without risk.

I have been overclocking hardware since 1992, but the iMac is a machine I treat with extreme caution:

- It has limited cooling
- It has no user replaceable parts
- It cost a fortune
- Its not a games machine.

For me, 750 /1075 with extreme high fans is an OK risk. It's still a risk though, and may reduce the lifetime of the GPU or cause damage. Be sure you are OK with that risk before moving on. I only write this as if you couldn't figure out MacFan, it concerns me you might make a mistake. Please do not take this as me being patronising, I am just trying to give advice.

Cheers

All I can say is WOW!!! what a huge improvement! I love this iMac, I am a gamer by nature and while I bought this computer for the OS X side of the house I wanted to be able to game as well. I cam from a computer that was running 2 GTX 480's in SLI... and while that computer was obviously faster than this for gaming, I can truly say I am now satisfied... SC II looks excellent in 2560x1440, I have an iMac i7 2.93 and it looks amazing while being perfectly smooth.

screen shot below is the computer I just sold recently so my wife would let me get this, and yes I am very used to OCing however I was tired as hell last night and my mind wasn't focused.

IMG_1478.jpg

BTW I would never turn back now. I wouldn't trade my imac for 2 of those machines unless it was to sell them and buy a Mac Pro, I have switched forever!

adding it all up

hi, i just bought my first mac brand new imac i5 :D (wich im getting it tomorrow), the things is im not really any good with technology, i have read this thread like 5 times and i think i got everything in place now, but just to be shure

1.- Install w7.
2.- install Ati Catalist Drivers
3.-use SMC fan control to speed the fans to around 1800/1800/1600
4.-unlock mis afterburner
5.-use Msi Afterburner to Oc to around 750/1075
6.-use GPU-Z to monitor my temp

PLAY

is this it? please i really suck at this :p

should i sintall boot camp drivers after w7 install or go directly to Ati drivers?

Definitely install the bootcamp drivers. They are not just for graphics, they get all of the mac things working with windows. Install your graphics drivers after these :)

Agreed.

I suggest:

- Install Windows 7 x64
- Install Bootcamp drivers
- REBOOT PC
- Device Manager->Display-> "Uninstall Device Drivers & DELETE files"
- REBOOT PC: (If you haven't selected the option to delete the files, it will autoinstall bootcamp ATI drivers again...)
- Install ATI Mobility drivers 10.80
- REBOOT PC

That worked for me, but you could also mess around with driver cleaners etc.

Cool. I take it that the MacFan advice I posted for you was OK? Hope that helped a bit.

SLI 480's a fun, but there is something special about Overclocking/Tuning the iMac, when we all have the same hardware.

I played Half Life 2 "FakeFactory mod 10.43" last night. (20GB of textures ontop of HL2)

Didn't run FRAPS but would guess 40-60fps at native resolution, max settings.

My Goodness! Amazing scenes indeed.

I'm delighted with my iMac. It's a fun toy.

Ah I didn't know about uninstalling the generic drivers before installing the latest ATI ones. I'll give that a go.

By the way is Windows 7 64bit worth it? I decided against installing the 64bit version because I wasn't sure if there would be any compatibility problems with certain applications and games. But if there are no problems I may put it on.

If you asked me a year ago I'd be 50/50.

Today I can give a clear advice to use x64.

-Games like GTA, Source and Crysis are optimised for 64bit
-Memory is getting dirt cheap and you will be pissed if you need to reinstall windows in 6 months when buying more DDR.
-The stock iMac has 4GB of memory, and even with the /3GB switch you can't use all of that in 32Bit windows.

So basically x64 windows is the right choice. The 32bit emulation layer works well, and if you have some strange legacy apps you can use Vmware to run a 32bit OS on a hypervisor.

Just my 2p.

That sounds good. It's a shame there is no way to just upgrade the 32bit install to 64bit.

I'll just dump my stuff off then reinstall. Thanks!

ok im going to sound like a F... cave man but exclty how and where do i do this (Device Manager->Display-> "Uninstall Device Drivers & DELETE files")

and also i been looking at where to unlock msi afterburner and i went to program files-msi afterburner looked everywhere and couldnt find the notepad.

i nkow the sound incredibly dumb but i really need to know, thanks fore everyones help.

ok found device manager and all but the only option i get close to delate driver is disable selected devie wich im guessing is not what i have to do.... or is it the last option? the one that says (advance).

sorry if i doont make myself clear but my windows is in another lenguage and its hard to translate techincal stuff.

i just couldnt wait for a reply so i clicked on the advance and went ahead and removed everything, wich got my screen looking all crappy again. restarted it and downloaded catalyst dirvers, they installed properly and it tells me instalation is now finished but i get a warning message sayin "catalyst control center is not compatible with your graphic adapteractivated driver. update your drivers or activate your ati adaptor on scrren admin" or something like that.

soryy dont pay atention to the post above i have worked out almost everything, (how do i check if its correct?) now the only problem is that when i opnened msiafterburner.cfg in note pad i changed the o to 1 to unlock but it wont let me save... what do i do? when i press save it tells me that theres already a file with that name i put over write but is says i cant...?

Thinking...

Just as an aside.

I was wondering how to reduce operating temperatures inside the iMac (I'm running a Corei7 27") and found a small fan at a local shop that I've pointed at the back of the machine blowing upwards.

See this temperature graph. The temps dropped noticeably about halfway thru which is where I turned it on.

If you notice, there's a peak on the right side of the graph where I shut it off briefly and then back on again.

This was under 100% load of the CPU but not overclocking video in any way.

I figured that every little bit helps and this might help someone trying to get a little extra boost out of the machine without cooking your video card.

Right click Notepad and then "Run as Administrator" then open the CFG file, and save.

I've spent the day with my new iMac (loving the screen :p) but I am extremely frustrated due to problems I have had overclocking the card.

I have installed afterburner and macfan and updated to the 5850m drivers. Afterburner has been unlocked and I am able to change the clock speed sliders and apply them, however I am seeing absolutely no difference in performance from stock, I can only to assume that the overclock isnt actually applying.

I get about 13500 in 3dmark06 on stock btw.
msi.jpg

I noticed that on the right the Max speeds are still stock.

Can anybody give me a hand with this? I'm determined not to try any games until I get this thing running at its proper potential!
Any help much appreciated!

EDIT: Sorry guys, I fixed the problem with a driver reinstall, something must have gone wrong. My bad!

On a side note, does anybody know how to set fan speeds on startup with macfan?

The easiest alternative to macfan would probably be setting fan speeds with smc fan control under osx, then restarting (not shutting down) your iMac back into windows partition. Fan speeds will stick.

Creat your MacFan.cmd file as per my post a few messages above.

Then open "Task Scheduler" in Windows 7

From Task Scheduler File-> Create Basic Task

Name: Start MacFan on boot
Description: (Leave Blank)
[CLICK NEXT]

TRIGGER

Select "When Computer Starts"

[CLICK NEXT]

ACTION

Select "Start A program"

Browse to your macFan.cmd script

[CLICK NEXT]

Ignore Arguments

[CLICK FINISH]

Then from Task Scheduler library, Right click "Start MacFan" and select "Properties"

Under the "GENERAL TAB" click "Change user or Group"

Select your local administrator.

Click "Run with highest privivileges"

TEST THAT IT WORKS!

Right click the task and choose "Run" and make sure those fans spin up.

CONCLUSION:

1.) You create a .cmd file to set the fans at the desired speed.
2.) You use task scheduler to pick this task at computer startup
3.) You edit the task to ensure that it has admin privs. (Needed by MAcFan)

ON A SIDE NOTE:

I personally rather leave the default fan speeds, and if I am going to game or do something else I have two .cmd scripts on the desktop "High Speed" and "Mid Speed"

That way I just Right Click and run as admin after boot.

Hope this info helps.

I have a problem. I can't seem to update my ati mobility drivers to 10.8. I uninstalled the bootcamp drivers, restart my iMac and when the computer comes on it installed the default gpu drivers. When I try installing the 10.8 drivers, it installs but after installation I get a message saying catalyst isn't compatible with the driver version of my graphics adapter. I restart and i'm stuck on the default drivers with no accelerations. Am I doing something wrong?

I did what you said and it's the same thing.

After I chose the delete option and uninstall the driver, I restart. Upon restart, it's installs the standard VGA graphics drivers. I install the 10.8 Catalyst. After installation, it gives me the same warning, "The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver. or enable your ATI adapter using the Display Manager."

I'm not sure what to do....

Just a silly question, but you are downloading the mobility version of the drivers, right?

What would you guys say the stability is with this GFX card and a mild over clock as we've been seeing discussed?

In the past, with my PC rigs I always seemed to have random problems with the parts that I over-clocked as well as more frequent failures of the components in question.

Anytime something would crash on my OC PC I'd always be questioning the OC itself as being the culprit.

I do very little gaming on my iMac but definitely if I spring for the new i7 bad boy I will want to squeeze all performance possible out of it for when I'm running Win 7 and doing gaming.

I've been reading through this thread for a while now.

I've got an iMac 21.5" i3 3.2Ghz with the HD 5670 (Mobility HD 5730).
I play games in bootcamp so I naturally want to over clock my GPU since it's the bottleneck in my gaming.

I cannot get it to over clock. I've tried the unofficial unlock in MSI Afterbuner. When I apply the overclock, it just reverts back to the default values. This happens with the drivers supplied in bootcamp 3.1 and catalysts 10.8.

What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your time, I appreciate it :)

Tom.

EDIT: Seems I've solved my own problem. I was using an old version of MSI Afterburner (1.1). I'm now on 1.6 and works perfect :D
