Never have seen that screen... course I live in northern Michigan... so it doesn't get quite that hot here... sometimes in the summer, but thats a ways a way still.
 
This is "extensive" use?

It is when the radios are on full power trying to download maps from cell towers that are moving away from you at freeway speeds, while the cpu is busy continuously updating the display as the blue dot moves. Bonus points if the display brightness is all the way up so that you can see it in the sunlight. Charging the battery while this is going on also adds some heat.

how do other phones handle that scenario?

The iPhone isn't the first phone with GPS or maps.
