you need to turn wi-fi off before you go to bed

I don't understand that because I never had to turn off anything with my iPhone 3G...or even my original first-gen iPhone. I never turned off wifi on those devices and standby drain was minimal.

On a funny note: the Apple support tech made similar suggestions - turn off push, exchange, fetch, brightness, wifi, 3G, location services, vibrate - everything short of 'turn off the entire phone.'

Something to do with the OS. Think it still searches for wifi when "sleeping".

Which is a funny term actually. I feel with the new 4.0 a lot of bugs it has is being relatively active while in "sleep" mode.

I've been having 1 to 2% drain per night. I'd recommend trying to put it on airplane mode one night and see what happens. Some of those are pretty large drops overnight, assuming you aren't pushing e-mails/notifications/etc.

I have 1 hour and 20 minutes usage
Standby - 4 hours 44minutes
sitting at 80%
this is from last full charge -

Is that average battery life?

If you just flip it over to airplane mode, would i still receive calls?

that seems really easy instead of switching everything off under settings, i dont care about push, location, wifi etc while i am sleeping

I had the same issue. I think it's location services, but it might be 3G in my area (it stinks and rarely connects very well, but that's another story). Try one or more of these things at night just before you put your phone to sleep:

Visit http://oo.apple.com/ to opt out of the location tracking service thingy.
Turn off location services.
Turn off Wi-Fi.
Turn off 3G.

You'll still be able to receive calls, but these methods will stop all potential background activity that may or may not be going on when you're not using your phone.

I haven't charged my iPhone 4 since Tuesday night. I unplugged it from the USB cable at about 7am on Wednesday morning. It has been left on the entire time (yes, overnight for two nights) since I unplugged it from the USB cable. During the past two days, I've played about 20-30 minutes worth of 'Angry Birds', I've listened to a total of approx. 200 minutes of podcasts, I've checked E-mail at least a dozen times (and responded to a few), I've browsed the web for at least 20-30 minutes, and I've used a few other random apps for a few minutes each.

Granted, the above is not heavy use, but it's pretty much normal use for me.

It's been more than 56 hours since my iPhone 4 was last charged and right now it still shows 51% of the battery left.

Absolutely amazing battery life! Apple has hit a home run with battery life on the iPhone 4!!

Note: I have all push notifications turned off. But, WiFi and Bluetooth are always on.

This is why iPhones suck not being jailbroken, damn you SBSettings

I would say the reason your battery is draining is because of multi-tasking. I used to have a 3G. Whenever I bring up ths Stock Quote app, I would need to wait for it to refresh to get the lastest quotes. With iPhone 4, I often find that the app already have the most recent quotes when I open it. So what it means is that the app is still getting quotes over Wi-Fi, 3G, and through whatever means necessary ALL DAY LONG!!

Now the real issue is that my 3G data usage is WAY UP because of that!

I charged to 100% then switched to airplane mode with wifi off. Went to bed and when I woke up to 80%

To me that is just unacceptable. I've returned to Apple and had it replaced today. I'm now on iPhone 4 number 3. Death grip issue also on all 3

Agreed. Some was wonky there if it's still draining that much when airplane mode is on. Hopefully your new phone won't have the issue.

Out of curiousity, was it a brand new one, or a refurb of someone elses they brought in? I'm wondering if they are hiding extras at the store for people who are having issues (vs selling them out as they come in).

Have you tried doing the Reset all Settings (not erase data, just a reset) and then letting it fall to 0% battery and recharging yet? This worked for me after a restore from backup was used to set up the new iPhone. And even if the wifi ad 3G are turned off, the background apps might still be trying to retrieve data, so you might want to close all the recent apps and then do that test.

What I don't get is that when I first got my phone, the charge was lasting about 2 1/2 days. I had to charge at about 56 stand by hours give or take a few. Then I messed with the auto brightness, I shut it off and since then it seems like the battery is draining at a much more rapid pace.

I may try the reset settings button and see what happens. Right now I am currently at 9 hours, 55 minutes stand by and 3 hours, 17 minutes usage and have 65% left.

I have also just went in and turned off push for e-mail, considering all my e-mails were pop, probably no need to leave that turned on. I also shut off facebook notifications for most of the ones they offer.

They bring them out of these black cases that look like eye glasses cases. They then just switch the sims and activate new iPhone. They come with the front n back plastic protection sheet.

Seem pretty new to me. The problem with getting it replaced is then u start worrying if your gonna pick up all the other bad symptoms I.e yellow spots, proximity sensor issues, death grip etc

Everysones usage us being reported incorrectly.

I'm on a new phone as I took back my first, and STILL am having the damn issue.

I'm getting very upset. Everything else works fantastic but the god damn battery. Taking this phone back to apple today. Guess we'll see if a third fixes the issue.

I don't want to actually return the phone and buy a 3gs, but damnit they are trying to force my hand.

Just curious what do you have on, location or push? If those are on isn't it normal to drop 10-20 percent in the night? I mean with standby usage and if you browse a lot, if you get through about a day on one charge, isn't that good? That's what I'm getting not sure if it's good or bad

No, you wouldn't get calls. It turns off all transmissions (so you can use it on a plane safely, thus, airplane mode). The idea here is that if all transmissions are off, it can't be doing extraneous push/fetches. Of course, depending on how bad the multitasking is programmed, apps may still stay active waiting for a connection, and using battery. But it seems the simplest method to make sure there's nothing transmitting.

Sounds like potentially could be refurbs then (or returns from other people). Although, I doubt there are any refurbs yet, it being so new. The plastic sheet really means nothing (they could stick those on theirselves after the fact). Of course, just coming in a box doesn't mean much either (they could have a shrink wrap machine in back).

I lose about 2% every night. Every setting off. Sometimes I do airplane mode. I charged my phone from 3% to 82% just recently. Took about 75 minutes. Been on wifi for 35 min and only lost 4% so far. Auto-brightness on and brightness at 50%.

I did restore once on my third day of owning it and I did charge it 24 hours the very first time just for the hell of it.

So yeah, 2% is what I lose in about 8 hours of standby.

That is what I would assume would be normal, as I said these phones are rated for 300 hours of standby. At the current rate of discharge according to you that would equal about 400 hours of standby thus beating Apples calculation by a significant amount. Hopefully Apple just under estimated and 400 is about how many you can expect, if it is that's phenomenal. I won't be able to check anything out though tonight as I'll be charging it for tomorrows "outing". Tomorrow night though I will try to leave it unplugged and see what ends up happening!

I contacted Apple tech support explained the issue that I as well as many of you are having and after some time the man I was on the phone with decided to escalate me to a Senior Adviser. She is an incredibly nice woman, who instructed me to take it to the Apple Store about an hour away and to call her back and let her know how it goes. The issue with my situation is that there is a small small hairline crack on my screen that I mentioned and she felt very badly that this had occurred but was unsure of what would happen at the Apple Store, she mentioned that if the Apple Store wouldn't do it then she would take care of it herself.

So I got to the Apple Store the genius took me in and essentially called me a liar and explained that what his diagnostic program was showing him in this case "frequent app crashing" wasn't normal for a phone restored as new. So I drove an hour just to have him DFU restore it which has made no difference. I called Michelle back and explained my situation and she was very upset with the experience I had and informed me that she had left appropriate feedback at the store. Her last instruction was to wait until Sunday as that's when she's back available again and see how it does and it if still sucks she'll order a replacement phone.

Overall I'm having a very good experience with getting this issue resolved. I encourage all of you to pursue it and get your phone replaced!

i'm living with my inlaws temporarily and i've noticed that in their part of NYC my iphone 3GS and blackberry seem to use more battery power than where i usually live.

i've also changed my email to manual fetch rather than every hour or 15 minutes except for my push accounts. made a noticeable difference

This Is Good Battery Life

I basically get like 2% also of battery drain overnight.

But this, this is just terrific:
mail

What I did:

Left charging it without using it, I though this would actually give it a nice boost
Brightness 50% without auto
Notifications on
3G on
Fetch 30 mins

Usage consisted of:
Safari browsing topics here on MR
Watched the Inception trailer on YT mobile app over 3G on HQ
Listening to music
Checked e-mail once
Light playing games

I can deduce that I am getting like almost 1 hour for every 10%. This is amazing.

I do recommend that to get GREAT battery life:
Fetch e-mail
Auto brightness really killed my battery last times, so, I basically go standard 50%
When charging, don't use it, I actually unplugged it when it reached full, overnight charge didn't help me

So yeah, and I was about to get a replacement xD

So I'm on my third iphone 4 now.. I get on average about 6-7 hours usage and a day or so of standby.

I run with fetch every 30 minutes, location off unless I use it, 3g always on, wifi anytime I'm home...

WAY better than my previous 2. I do turn off wifi during the night, as that seems to REALLY improve overnight battery.

I turn off my phone at night. I don't want my work calling me in the middle of the night. :)
