If I might ... throw some information out there that is hopefully useful...

The 80% claim comes from battery stats from sites such as below:

Some see 80% DoD as an acceptable tradeoff for longevity and not inconveniencing the user so much (I follow this and limit my phone to 80% because it doesn't inconvenience me at all).

Not only slower charging but also keeping the depth of discharge low can have a big impact on batteries - especially as they age.

Obviously, most people are going to get a new phone every few years, and some go to 5 years - so very few people see more than 500 cycles on their phones.

Heat is the #1 factor. Keep your phone cool as much as you can (don't leave it in a hot car, don't leave it in the sun, don't use some terrible wireless chargers that bake the battery).

Yes, slow charging has an impact, but it's very minimal. Depth of Discharge has a greater impact. And keeping the battery cool probably has the greatest impact.

I've read Isidor's book (from https://batteryuniversity.com) - great book on batteries if they're a hobby of yours like they are mine.

But most people here are also right... For $99 you can get a new battery - after 2 years my wife's iPhone 15 Pro Max had 84% health. For $99 she has a 103% health battery replacement and is enjoying her phone like it is new. She's a heavy user (had 550+ cycles in 2 years) and we were using a terrible Belkin wireless charger that took her phone to 105F+ while charging (got rid of that and she now has wired).

So use your phone, don't think about it too much, keep it out of the sun/car in the summer, and you're good!

I use the 5W charger for overnight, basically because I don't need the fast charging while sleeping.

I use the original Apple 5W block, plus an older standard USB to lightning cable and the lightning to usb-c apple adapter.

The extra longitude provided by the adapter is perfect for my needs, and also I can use the lighting cable alone to charge AirPods when needed ^^

What if you need enough charge on your phone in an emergency in the middle of the night?
Most people don’t have their phone drained down to zero or one or two minutes left. Always have some juice left when it’s placed on a charger at night and then after an hour, you have a whole lot more. No problem with emergencies. If you have to make a phone call that last 2 to 5 or 10 minutes, plenty battery left.

Thank you everyone!

So most important thing is not to let the battery drain lower than 25%

Now what is the best 5Watt charger that won't catch on fire? Or is there a programmable charger that I can set to 5W?

Your overall battery health and longevity (as in lifespan) would be better with 5W. Less heat, slower charge, cells will age slightly less and lifespan will be better. But it’s not going to be huge and if you are gonna do an annual upgrade or 2 year upgrade it really just doesn’t make a huge impact. 98% batter health vs 93%, it’s just not gonna be that dramatic before you get a new phone. If you plane to keep longer, the effect will be be more dramatic over time

Unlike the old phones the 17s have a vapor chamber and made out of aluminum. With these changes the extra heat generated by the 20W or higher is no longer an issue. Also, it doesn’t charge at the full peak current till it’s full so whatever heat is generated only last for a few mins which is in turn dissipated quickly on the new models.

So my suggestion is to feel free to use 20W charger. Only thing to look out for is those think Otterbox cases that don’t let the phone breathe. Besides that, knock yourself out.
It does still affect the battery cells themselves. Slower charging = less heat and the cells won’t age/degrade as fast. This will have an impact over a long period of time

I would think the Apple brand one would be the best

Go with an official Apple 5w charger. There are a lot of TEMU cheapo gas-station style chargers out there that may damage your device in the long run. I always stick with Apple, Belkin or Anker.

Don't worry about it! Don't listen to the people in this thread obsessing over their batteries and spending their time babying every aspect of their phone.

These phones are designed to be used normally. Battery health is pure luck unless you seriously abuse it, like leaving it at 100% or 0% for days, or leaving it to roast in a hot car.

Live your life and enjoy your phone!

That’s not true. Avoiding heat will increase battery life span. They are designed to be used but there are always optimal conditions vs. non-optimal. In the case of the battery, it will last longer the less it is exposed to heat, period. Charging slowly will make a difference. It’s the chemical design of the battery.

Use your phone snd charge it with a normal charger. Trying to baby an every changing chemical reaction (battery) is a waste of time. Should the battery be less than 80% in a year, Apple will replace for free. After that, spend the money if needed on a new battery. Chances are you will have a different phone before the battery ever gets to the point of needing to be replaced.

Focus on living your life with meaning instead of obsessing over something so trivial as a replaceable phone battery.

It makes so little difference it doesn't matter. Two people can have the same phone, use it exactly the same way, and have completely different battery health.

It's luck with the battery in your device, and people just attribute the result to all their compulsive battery behaviour.

I've always just used my phone normally, charged with MagSafe or max speed over wired, whenever I wanted, never fiddled with charging limits, and mostly end up with the same or better battery health after 1-2 years as the battery cult.

i used a 5w over night on my 15pro max and it dropped to 87% health in only 230 charges although then stayed there up until i traded it in with 400 cycles. So honeslty i do think its partly luck and partly some weird way apple measure it. Honeslty ive got a 17pm now and yes i do have some weird battery health anxiety but im trying to just ignore it and use it

For me, it's less about the price and more about the careless Geniuses that end up damaging the phone's finish during the replacement. Any way to prolong the interval helps a bit

(3 battery replacements total over the years from Apple Store; each resulted in new blemishes on the body)

At night I sleep 6-7hrs. So even if my new IPhone 17 Pro Max was at 1% charging using a 5Watt would bring it up to my 80% max charge limit.

I want to know if there is any advantages of using the original apple 5W or it worse?
My other option is the Apple 20Watt.

Thoughts?
I use whatever charger is available, last couple of nights I have been charging my 17 PM with my MBA’s 30W charger, did the same with my 15 Pro Max and battery health is still good, my 15 PM is now at 90% health with over 550 cycles.

I charge my phone to 100% in the evening as I watch tv, take off charge when it’s done before i go to bed, and do so every night. I use an Anker 30W charger.

Never had an issue with battery that I’m aware of. I’m not the kind to obsess over it, never check battery health either.
