Dumb question and sorry if it's been covered here but does the new 5k iMac use the same RAM as the 27" late 2012 iMac?

Am I missing something? You can get 32GB for under 300 on amazon.

OWC's markups are always higher than Amazon's. This is nothing new. It happens every hardware generation, yet they remain in business.

I can't wait to see what OWC will be able to offer for the new Mac Mini: quad processors, etc.

That will not happen, because the notebook processors are soldered in per specification rather than socketed. Unlike ram it's a matter of cpu choice. For example they couldn't do the same thing with the mac pro processors.

It would.

That is incorrect. It's considered user serviceable on the 27" models. It is advisable to retain the original ram. That gives you an easy testing method in case of kernel panics and ensures against testing problems prior to repair service.

I did.

He said he bets that it voids warranty and you said it does.

We were talking about RAM upgrades..

If you look back, you'll see I wrote that a hypothetical quad core upgrade to the new Mini would void the warranty while upgrading RAM on an iMac would not.

Maybe you should understand the context yourself, because I am NOT seeing that. He said the RAM upgrade voids warranty and you said to him yes it does.

In context, Traverse appears to be commenting on FloatingBones' comment where he suggests OWC could come out with a quad-core upgrade to the new Mini. That would indeed void the Apple warranty.

if you read the complete thread, you'd see that is not what I said would void the warranty.

OK I can see how that can be seen as the context as well.

However I thought his context was RAM since this thread is about RAM and he didn't quote anyone that was talking about the proc upgrades.

It's the same body and the older Mac Minis, so I assume they meant that the bottom screws off. Though according to Macworld they have actually removed this feature.

Dang. There goes the main reason I'd ever buy one of those. I like hacking stuff sometimes.

The company supposedly matters. My mom had a bad experience with cheap RAM failing in her iMac. Plus this is "Mac-certified," if it means anything beyond customer reassurance.

Yes, it's not a reply unless there's a quote. Everyone would definitely think he's referring to the article.

The same crucial 32GB of RAM listed earlier here for the 2014 iMac was listed on Amazon for $270 a couple days ago. This is less then half the cost for Apple's upgrade.

----------

Can anyone explain how Apple thinks 2 8GB modules are $200(for 16GB) but to add another 2 is $400 more then 16GB?? (to get 32GB) It would have at least been reasonable to charge $400 for the 32GB not the ripoff price of $600.

I picked up the 16 GB kit from Crucial.com

I'll be plenty happy with 24 GB of RAM for now.

24 more hours till the beast arrives!

It seems stupid they allow additional RAM on iMacs and not Mac Minis. Surely those purchasing iMac have a lot more $$$ to spend and would attract people to upgrade directly from Apple if it was soldered on them and more money for them. Seems sad they made minis fixed configs.

OWC should better hurry up with an SSD for late 2014 MacbookPro 13" Retina!
Waiting, waiting and even more waiting.
