Out of curiosity - if one gets an upgrade from these guys, what happens to the CPU already in place?

Do they send it back to you or do they hold onto it?

OWC clearly doesn't want to talk about what happens to the Apple warranty - they removed a question from their blog about it.

If you need the performance of a higher core CPU, you're far better served getting it from Apple originally.

I didn't say they removed that section - I said they removed a question about it from the blog post announcing the "upgrades."

Clearly OWC does not want to admit the obvious: that their CPU "upgrade" invalidates the Apple limited warranty. And note the OWC "warranty" specifically excludes the SSD.

How do you think OWC will source a graphics card if one fails?

They could be a bit more candid by answering the question on their blog by referring people to their FAQ or a clear warranty statement.

It is clear they are responsible for the warranty. As an Apple authorized service provider, they do have rules to follow in order to get future access to service parts.

Anyone interested in the upgrade should get a clear statement of warranty in writing.

If I take a look at most large companies, like Apple, their warranty statements now appear to be many more pages than the printed documentation accompanying the product. I have mistaken the warranty booklet for the quickstart guide many times. :D

I'm confused with the article.
Are they saying the 12c they provide is 46% faster than the stock 12c?
Or 46% faster than the 4c (base model)?

More expensive, but not nearly as bad as the pricing you quoted.

I appreciate the worthwhile effort put into the build.

I don't think a $400 difference in the 3,500 range is what I'd call a "bad" comparison.

I just want people to realize once you toss in a completely serviced and built for you machine, that cries that amount to "what a rip-off" are indeed disingenuous.

Liked your build BTW. :)

If it's not Apple sanctioned, where are they getting the technical specifications from for the CPUs? That's not public info. That's why they're not completely different things. Apple doesn't have a public tech note anywhere that gives out that information.

The only reason Apple would disclose that information is if they intended for the processors to be swappable for repair parts that didn't come from Apple originally.

Maybe OWC is an Apple Developer and Apple divulges this info to third parties who develop hardware and software. If it was "Apple sanctioned" I guarantee OWC would put this all over their web page.
