I have 70GB left on my 256GB drive right now. So if I get the OWC/OCZ drive, i'll only start with 200GB left. No good... I'm waiting for the new Macbook Pros to come out, but I'm definitely considering going with an Optibay dual SSD solution as well....

Rumors do say that when Intel issues the Postville refresh in Q4 2010 they will include a 600 GB drive. Hard to believe (I can imagine 300 GB easily), but that is the word in the grapevine. Of course, Q4 might be too long of a wait.

Any more real life experience with the OWC ssd's? Seems like OCZ will releasing to market with the similar SandForce SSDs to market in the coming weeks.

I maybe going for the SandForce ones as I think they might be useful for PS or Lightroom scratch with their faster writes compared to the Intels.

FTA--> Feb 19 Now we get to the hard part, recommendation time.
If you’re willing to take the risk, the Vertex LE appears to be the best SSD you can buy at $399.

Go up another $100 and the recommendation is easily the Crucial RealSSD C300. Again, assuming that nothing horrible ever happens with the drive. <--

OWC got 5yrs warranty vs OCZ 3yrs.

Does anyone on these forums have experience with this drive? Considering it is unlikely OSX will support TRIM this year, the Sandforce drives seem to be the best option for us right now. I'd love to see more info before the new MBPs come out.

How's the C300 treating you so far? I'm curious about reliability, Anandtech managed to have one fail on them:

I havent made the purchase yet. Right now i'm on an older MacBook Pro with an older 256GB SSD. I'm waiting to pull the trigger on the new MacBook Pro (as soon as it's released) and I was planning on getting the Crucial C300 with it. However, I'm running out of space on my 256GB drive. I'm thinking about either getting two 200GB OWC drives and running them in RAID 0 or getting two Crucial C300 drives and running them in Raid 0 (using the optibay). I don't like having to move stuff off my primary drive for storage and I HATE having to wonder when i'll run out of space... what do you think? should i go w/ 2x sandforce drives or 2x C300s? I'm really leaning toward the C300, but I can't decide...... Luckily. there haven't been any MacBook Pro releases yet so Apple is giving me some time to think about it!

If I had to choose between Crucial and Sandforce, I'd pick Crucial. I'm still a little scared of the new Sandforce controller. The only brand that I trust is Intel, but I'll have to wait until Q4 to get the next generation.

has anyone got the mercury extreme from OWC yet, i am interested from the view that it doesn't degrade, but I want to be sure I am buying a good drive as I am in the UK and don't want the hassle of shipping it back.

...

I have a 100gb model, have had it probobly three weeks or so. No slowdown whatsoever so far. Not sure what sleep issues you are refering to, I was told that there was a sleep issue on the very first shipment of drives which they sent e-mails to the people who had them so they could replace them with a drive with better firmware...my MBP 13 sleeps and wakes no problems with this SSD

Well, that's good to hear. Not sure where i read it, but OWC has confirmed that there is a "known issue" and that they are working on a fix. I wonder if it is just for certain early units or something like that. I'm going to wait for Anand's next big SSD roundup, but i'm leaning toward the RealSSD C300.

...

I think it was a firmware flaw in the first batch. I had an issue with the first drive they sent me and I talked to a really nice guy at customer support and he told me the first batch had a sleep issue due to the firmware on the drive which had been fixed. There is for sure no sleep issue anymore and they must have fixed it quickly because I ordered mine within the first week of release and didn't get one of the affected drives even the first time around (my first drive malfunctioned 4 days after I put it in and they sent me a new one which has been perfectly fine)

I'm more interested in the wake-from-sleep / sleep issues... they said they will have them fixed soon....

Same here. I had sleep issues on and off for 5 months with an OCZ Vertex until it just completely died on me. Took a month (!) to get my money back from OCZ. I bought an intel G2 after that disaster and have had absolutely zero problems with the drive, except for the performance degradation after a few months and the notoriously slow write speeds. But its reliability has been absolutely perfect.

I'm weary about trusting another manufacturer, but the reviews on this drive and anecdotal evidence that they've fixed the sleep issue seems promising. OCZ still, a year later, has no solution for a bunch of Mac users and Vertex drives. Some can't reliably sleep their machines, some can't use them for boot camp, etc.

hmm, bugger, i cancelled my OWC order as was a wait, ordered an intel 160GB from ebuyer, but that has put me off now

What has put you off? Performance degradation is almost trivial to reset if you have a clone of your SSD. Every three months I boot to a Kubuntu 9 disc, run the secure erase ATA command in Terminal (takes about 1 minute), reboot to my cloned drive, and clone all my data back to my SSD. 95% of the time is spent copying the files from one disk to the other, and then you've got a factory fresh SSD. Now, yes, it'd be nice not to have to do this. But the reliability of my intel ssd makes it worth it for me. And remember it's only writes that suffer from a decrease in speed. Reads are unaffected by this, and by far more important to me than writes.

I really don't trust anything that OCZ does now with SSDs. I won't be surprised at all if this Sandforce controller turns out to be garbage after people actually use them for a bit. I know OCZ doesn't make the controller but they did choose to use it.

any other ways to do it in Mac or windows, I would have a superduper clone of it anyways, as I backup nightly....

If Apple would implement TRIM in OS X already we wouldn't be having this conversation. I'm not sure what's taking them so long. They've had SSD options on notebooks for a while now.

In Windows you can use HDDerase. I'm not sure of a way to issue the secure erase command in OS X but you can buy a tool that does something similar from this guy: http://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-SSD-Reconditioning.html

ok thanks, in a way glad i've swapped, because ebuyer have already shipped the drive, and even if i wanted to re-order the OWC there is a wait of 19 days, thats before it reaches me in the UK

Looks like I'm in for the 19 day wait. I just ordered my OWC 100GB SSD last night. The plan is to use the SSD for the OS, my apps, and my Win7 VM while the home folder will reside on the 500GB HD I already have in my MBP. With all this time on my hands I got to thinking about implementation and I'd like a bit of feedback from those of you who are running two internal drives.

Is there a preferred arrangement, leave the HD in its bay and put the SSD in an Optibay, or move the SSD to the HD bay and the HD to the Optibay?

The concept of moving home to the HD sounds pretty solid to me except for one detail, your ~library. Wouldn't keeping the home library on the SSD result in better performance? Is there a downside to splitting the home library out of ~, leaving it on the SSD with the OS proper, and moving the remainder of the home library to the HD?

For what OWC is charging for the 200 GB drive I'd sooner get the Crucial RealSSD c300 256 GB drive for less money off newegg.

I wonder how many of the 200 GB model they've sold. The 160 GB G2 intel drive can be had for under $500 online. I just don't see people forking over another $300 for 40 gb of space from an unproven SSD vendor.

All right, I will keep OWC in mind ahead of Intel. 100 GB vs. 160 GB isn't too bad because of degradation. Plus I will have a MyBook so I should be set.

That said, it will be interesting to see if Intel really improves with the G3.
