BTW if you are using a combination of spinning drive and SSD drives than always put your spinner in the original spot. That is where the motion sensor is and you will want your spinning drive there.

Is the motion sensor worth losing SATA 3 connection speeds over? (If the drive supports SATA 3)
 
I'm thinking about investing in OWC for a while now... But I guess this makes the Vertex 3 look more attractive. I hope OWC gets their rears in gear and pump out a new firmware soon or at least upgrade the Mercury Pro line with the new SandForce controllers.

Hmmm not sure what controllers you are mentioning here but OWC took care of any sleep issues awhile back with new firmware. For the Pro models this is the latest revision 343A13F0 from what I know

First you have to have a SSD drive or spinning drive that will work with Sata 3 . Second we are not so sure yet if the Optical is Sata II or not. No one I have read has proved that yet. I doubt very highly Apple would mix up the Sata connections it is either Sata II all around or Sata III. Makes zero sense to me the Optical would be II when the Hard drive is III. Yes I see the reports of Sata III but no one has proved it either that it works in Sata III mode. Unless I missed something

"[4:22:11 PM] And other than the hibernation bug, 343 is a better firmware. We're looking at releasing an update in the next two weeks or so that will fix the hibernation bug, so I would advise simply turning off hibernation mode and waiting the two weeks, then just updating rather than backdating."

I appreciate their support so far so I'll wait it out since I am still in the 30day return window.

Well it's obvious that the new Vertex 3 is coming out and eventually OWC will release their SATA III SSD as well (for consumers). And if the optical drive is SATA II (which I'm going to assume for now until Apple releases a firmware that could enable SATA III or not), what would be preferable in your opinion?

OWC has already announced this. I think you will see a slew of SF-2000 based drives at CEBIT next week.

OWC has announced new SF 2000 SSDs but they have yet to release them for consumers (if so please post a link). So I am hoping that you are right and CeBIT will signal the oncoming of these SATA 3 drives into the market.

Did they say anything about a OS X firmware update tool? They previously said they would make this available Q1 2011.

Nice they say that but I tried everything possible when I had the 343...nothing kept it from freezing. I tried sms, hibernation, disk sleep, where ssd was located and nothing worked. Went to 310 and havent had a problem since. And I really cant believe it takes this long to make an updater for Mac...I think the updater is done they are just waiting on the new firmware to come out.

Yes...boot times and application loading. It will not help on game performance or other programs that are stored in ram once loaded which is about everything. So...programs WILL NOT run faster, but they WILL load faster initially.

The current SSD Apple sells in the CTO/BTO computers are slow compared to Sandforce controlled drives (OCZ, OWC, and some others) and also the Apple versions cost much more. Do not avoid buying aftermarket because you are afraid of changing one. It only involves 10 screws, 4 pegs and a plug.

Anything that is I/O bound (vs CPU/GPU bound) will be significantly faster. App launches are nearly instantaneous, boot times are vastly reduced. In addition, you Mac will run quieter and battery life is better.

An SSD uses nearly the same amount of power as a HDD. SSD really has no idle so its either on/off while the computer can control the speed of the HDD.

My battery life improved by about an hour after switching to an SSD.

You think it makes sense to buy a SDD or a new macbookpro?

I work with 1080p video editing and heavy graphics work.

I think I just answered my question.... I have the 7200 RPM HD now, and so to upgrade I'd need to buy a SDD for a bit over $500. I'm thinking new Macbookpro
 
Have you tested that reliably? There are many tests/benchmarks that state the SSD uses just as much power as the HDD.
I don't put a lot of stock in tests/benchmarks. They make too many assumptions that don't always hold true in real use.

I have consistently gotten longer battery life since I installed my SSD. My work is probably more I/O bound than the average use case assumed by the so-called tests, which means I would tend to cause a hard drive to spin more and consume more power than average.

I recall looking at my hard drive and SSD specs and noticing that power consumption for the SSD was is lower. I've long forgotten the particulars.
 
I just received my 240gb mercury extreme pro SSD and it came with FW 350A13F0. I'll let you know if i have problem with hibernation with this version.
I still turned off the HD sleep.
 
Hi all,

I've emailed technical support of OWC and they've identified the problem that I'd need to return the SSD for some power adjustment for my sleep problem. So they've promptly issued me an RMA to get it fixed. So the idle sleep issue seems like hardware related (which, I suppose, would be rectified now). On the other hand, the hibernation issue is firmware related and they're already testing a new firmware. Overall their support is professional and I'd still highly recommend.
 
I thought the boot drive HAD to be the site of the original HDD (ie not the optibay).

Thus if you put the SSD in the optibay, doesn't that mean you can't use it as a boot drive and therefore, a slower Macbook?

If that was true then you wouldn't be able to boot off of a CD.

Hi guys

Just got my 120GB OWC SSD, it has firmware 343 on it, and I'm experiencing the hibernation issue.

I've put those terminal commands through and still having the problem, so I'm just going to sleep it manually (an easy fix I guess).

Hopefully that update will be out shortly.

The SSD is amazing btw, so fast.
