OWC SSD "Upgrade" 2012 Macbook Air - Buyer Beware

OWC SSD "Upgrade" 2012 Macbook Air - Buyer Beware

Didn't think to post about this back when it happened, but I had HUGE issues with OWC's Aura SSD. While OWC customer service was generally friendly and tried to be helpful (but see below for the exception) the whole experience soured me on ever buying from them again.

To whit: I had three SSDs either arrive DOA or fail within a week or two of installation. I finally gave up and requested a refund but OWC only refunded part of the amount I paid - they deducted $75 for restocking and, get this, because the price of the SSD had changed since I bought it they refunded the new price, not the price I paid, claiming this has been their policy all along.

When I contacted them to get this rectified I got the runaround for weeks -- I was told basically that I was being penalized because so much time had elapsed since I initially bought the SSD (wtf?). I finally threatened to do a chargeback THEN the full amount was refunded, and even then it was treated as a "special accommodation". I was basically told I was being unreasonable but they were going to make an exception this one time.

I was a loyal OWC customer for years but after being forced to jump through hoops to get the proper refund and being treated the way I was pretty much guarantees I'll never buy from them or recommend them again.

Before I used the nuclear chargeback option I wrote up a very, very long timeline I sent OWC. This was before they really pissed me off with their weaksauce refund justification. It's boring as dirt but if you want the blow-by-blow I wrote the whole thing up here.

Perhaps OWC doesn't believe in beating a dead horse.

Do they still sell the hard drive? Are they still suggesting that it must be an end user installation issue, or that there are possibly a small number of defective drives that snuck through the line?

I'm not beating a dead horse. I'm asking why they are refusing to take responsibility for anything surrounding this, very clearly, defective product. It's relevant, and I think it deserves an explanation.

I'm also asking because I have an 11" Air with 64GBs of storage, and I am looking at my options.

OWC has a website, ask there. The horse that's dead is this thread. Why would OWC keep responding to the same question, simply reworded by every new complainer.

They answered why they chose to sand down the corner of the SSD that was used in their installation video? If so, what post was it in this thread, I missed it.

You have a way to contact them with what you imagined you've found in their video.

Attached is an image capture from the video that clearly shows the drives top right edge has been "modified" by either cutting a piece off, or sanded down.

I believe the saying is "A picture is worth a thousand words". I don't expect your smart ass to respond with a thousand words, and perhaps you will too busy pulling your foot out of your mouth to respond again.

Why are you so intent on ending this discussion? Valid concerns are still being raised. If you don't like this thread for whatever reason, move along.

They are the SAME CONCERNS that have already been raised, multiple times, in this thread. They are being raised by someone who thinks they found the OWC version of the Zapruder film. Raising the SAME concern, over and over again doesn't make it valid. Until YOU have something of VALUE to add, WERMY, YOU move along.

Hi knapperbot,

Just ignore the hate-monger spreading his anger (look at his sig).

I'm curious though - the OP had to modify his MBA in the lower right corner - isn't that where the problem was? I can't quite see the "sanded" area - is it the actual corner of the board that looks to be a tiny bit rounded? Perhaps you could highlight the area :)

Cheers!
Glen

Sheesh, talk about adding nothing of value. :D

All you are doing is whining that you don't like this thread and find it repetitive. You do realize every thread in this forum is optional, right? Meaning you don't HAVE to click on it?

Correct, the OP decided to hack the support structure of the battery, as opposed to sanding down the edge of the board. In you look at the screen shot, and draw a straight line down the right side of the board you will notice that the right edge tapers on the lower side (if you are looking at the image as posted).

The same comments apply to you, wermy.

OWC has replied in this thread, multiple times. Why should they, or any other vendor, keep replying to every new allegation or 'finding' just because someone, who isn't even a customer of OWC, thinks they should? Clearly, such people are not worth having as a customer.

I hope they've learned their lesson that no good deed (replying here) goes unpunished by the whiners who think they didn't do enough.

Seeya.

This thread hurts my heart. OWC is such a great company and they don't deserve this for this issue. I am sure with a phone call it would have been handled. Before coming in a forum and thrashing a business please have your ducks in a row. Its how they make a living. Real people own and work there.:(

Which is why it makes no sense that someone from the company hasn't come into the thread to clarify my findings. Anyone with two eyes and Quicktime can see what it is that I am referring to, so why don't they simply address it?

To have the view that I am not worth addressing because I haven't purchased the drive from them is just about the worst attitude you could possibly have as a seller, however; I thank you for your excellent input "kodeman".

It works

I just purchased the 240gb upgrade module, and was very skeptical because of this thread. I felt compelled to share my experience. The drive FIT PERFECTLY in my 2012 11.6" MacBook Air. I was expecting to have to shave the board a little, but to my surprise it fits perfect. So please all those who are considering the drive go ahead - it does in fact fit.

My OWC drive in my 11 inch MacBook Air just died too. The data is completely unrecoverable.

Mine "dies" every few months, but so far, I've always been able to get it to work again by removing it from the MacBook Air, then putting it back in, which seems to reset the SSD somehow. Maybe that will work for you, too?

By the way, count me in on those whose OWC SSDs didn't fit in their MacBook Airs originally. I had to whittle mine down a bit, and I now believe that whether your SSD will fit or not simply depends on where your MacBook Air's internals sit within their respective engineering tolerance ranges. Some will fit, some won't.

That still means the SSD is too big, of course, but it would explain how OWC ended up with the faulty design. And it would explain the conflicting reports in this thread.
