I didn't realise this......interesting stuff !!

The number I have now was originally a Vodafone number, ported to Orange. (This may be a stupid question but....) If calls are routed does this mean my new O2 calls will be routed through Orange & Vodafone or just vodafone...? Not that its interesting...

not sure but I think they are just routed through the original operator, ie the one that owns the area code for your phone.

--Zed

yes O2 will provide the PAC code!!...

btw.. did you know that orange still route your call!.. basically the original operator still receives the calls for your mobile number and then "forwards" them over to your new operator who then sends it to the phone.

That is interesting. I dont have any real need to keep the number - I don't give it to many, so if the porting of PAC codes has a disadvantage, i may just stick with a new number. I know that the 3 network (for example) had a very ropey infrastructure and I lost many many calls - -the Orange 3G network was better, but how much of their network is used when routing from the original provider before it gets to O2's? Is a "native" number quicker / better?

none of the 3G or any wireless network is used it's all done at the edge of their networks in their data centers.. It's all instantaneous and unnoticeable.

It's all documented in the Off-Comm document which outlines to all the UK operators how numbers are to be ported between phone networks.

I got my PAC code in the post yesterday (had taken 3 working days to arrive), it states that the code is valid for 30 days - if I don't use the code within the 30 day period - nothing happens, your contract will just carry on as it would have done if you'd never requested the code.

Sounds like you spoke to someone who was prepared to bend the truth to try and get you to stay with Orange.

Bottom line is this: If your contract is over, and you intend to switch to the iPhone on O2 on the 11th - call and insist on getting your PAC now so that you'll have it in plenty of time for the 11th - then all you need to do is make sure you're in line at your local O2 store so you get one before they sell out ;)

OK Linda at customer support said that even though I have finished my contract I still need to give 30 days notice. Hence if I got my PAC now I would pay 30 days line rental if I used the PAC tomoz, 11th or in 30days. Hence she said on the 11th transfer to PAYG Orange, then ask for my PAC and they will give me it by txt and not snail mail.

Thereforeif Linda is correct everyone who is getting their PACs now and at the end of their contract they will be paying 30 days line rental from now...

I would strongly recommend that you do not let Orange fiddle with your contract or change it in any way from contract to PAYG, or to a different contract. Operators are obliged to provide a PAC code for number porting on request, however they are NOT obliged to preserve your number when changing services on the same provider (ie PAYG to contract or vice-versa) - so, doing what you have been told there is introducing a risky complication.

Regarding the 30 day notice, let me quote direct from Orange's PAC code letter to me:

"
Will it cost anything to port my number to another network?

No, there is not a fee to port your number. You will see some additional charges on your final bill, but they are to cover the remaining days you are with Orange, or for the 30 day notice period to leave us.

For example,
  • You have to give 30 days' notice to leave Orange, and this starts from the date tha the Port Authority Code is issued.
  • If your number is ported to another network before the 30 days has expired, you will be charged for the remainder of the notice period. This will appear on your bill as a "PAC debit", and is calculated by multiplying your daily line rental subscription by the number of days left.
  • If you have asked to port during your 12 month contract, you will be charged for the remainder of your agreement period. You will by now, have already paid for this, as the code cannot be issued until payment has been received.
"

Also note the following regarding none usage of the PAC code:
"
If you decide not to use the code before the expiry date, your account will remain active and you can continue to use your phone and services with Orange as normal.
"

In short, yes there are charges - but it seems setup that they are unavoidable - you can't cancel your contract before getting your PAC, but by getting your PAC you start a notice period that you will have no option but to finish early when you give the code to O2!

Just a follow up to this post.

I received my PAC code from Orange after calling them earlier this week.

They made no attempt to keep me at the time and was quite willing to let me go, even though I've been with them for about 7 years and pay at the moment £50pm (highest bill was in December and was £280 - just dont ask !!!!)

This time next week I'll still be playing with it....

Orange to carry iPhone???

I just called Orange to today to request a PAC code. When I told them it was to move to O2 for the iPhone the girl on the end asked if I was aware that Orange would also be carrying the iPhone?
Me: No, as far as I was aware the iPhone is exclusive to O2... are you sure?
Orange: Yes, she replies, we will definitely have it.
Me: When?
Orange: Ummm, I don't know, we don't have a date yet.

Anyone else heard anything, or is this a desperate attempt to get another month out of me?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

I was with Orange for over 12 years and average bill of about 150. Still they made no effort to keep me. Not that there was anything they could have done. In my mind orange have stagnated they have failed to bring anything new to their network. News phones always take a year longer than other providers to come out.

So basically everyone is paying ~£30 to leave Orange?

Why would they not port my number over to PAYG Orange?

she's partly right.. as in, orange will have the iphone, but not in the uk :p

O2 in the UK have an exclusive for 2 years... of which another year left to run.. It takes Orange about a year to bring any new decent phone to the market so that's about 2 years before you'll see it on the orange network in the UK..

If in that time you want to be with orange well you can request a PAC code from O2 and move back.

Ofcomm makes no restrictions on the number of times you can move between operators.

Nope... if you are out of contract then you do not have to pay anything for a PAC code.

They will I had them port one of my numbers which was on contract with orange over to a PAYG on Orange.. You just have to be careful as they will lose your number at a drop of a hat and give you a new one... If you're persistent then it can be done.

3 disconection reps said that you still have to give 30 days notice even if out of contract, hence if I ask for PAC today, I will pay for the next 30 days plus my £45 from Friday. I have gone from contract to PAYG with Orange before, but it was years ago.

 i was working for orange for over a year (this is going back 5 months), and every time i rang up for a customer to request a PAC code, orange always gave it over the phone. Now i just rang them to get mine, as im going from Pay as you go to to iPhone next week, and they have started sending them through the post! I think this is more of a security issue then anything!

Yeah, I need to pay to terminate my Orange contract early in order to get PAC code, which I'm more than happy to do.

Surprise surprise, their "computers are down" so they can't take a payment. They said to call back in an hour, and I did. Computers still down.

They refuse to give a fix time, won't call me when they're ready, say there's no point speaking to a supervisor.

Computers down? Your problem, Orange. Stop obstructing people exercising their right to leave.

Computers down? 200,000+ people try to sign a contract for the iPhone...and presumably then try to cancel their contracts with everyone else... I wonder if that is why the Orange system is down?

just phone orange and ask the question. We can't guess what they will say... it is however likely that you can start to put the wheels in motion as they usually require a months notice of termination.

Ring orange. You will need to pay the contract monthly price until it ends, whether you use the phone or not. You will have to give them 30 days notice...d it now. Porting the PAC code will take 4 days. You have 30 days within which to port or it lapses back to Orange account. orange may tell you PAC code porting wont work to an existing O2 iPhone number. It does work...I had a 3G iPhone for 8 days prior to porting my old no.
