Apple is acting like the phone companies themselves are - AT&T for example, with their DSL, won't compete in markets where say, Comcast is their only competitor (or any other lame duck cable company that won't push AT&T's buttons harshly).

Apple didn't want to bother investing R&D when they knew they had no competition. The Palm Pre comes along, the Android comes along, both put pressure on Apple, and they step up to the plate.

Competition is FTW. Monopolies are NOT. I was (and still hope) that the Zune and other competitors step up and manage to beat Apple into innovating again.

Harsh competition is a GOOD thing, it's what keeps the tech market moving like crazy.

The real point is how dumb this thread is. I'm pretty sure if I had no life I could go back and find the exact same thing said about both the Storm and the G1. Both of those phones have proven to be just another model in stores. Most people I know wouldn't know what the hell I was talking about if I mentioned those two phones.

I don't think it's anymore dumb then any of the "will there be a new iPhone this summer?" or "will I be able to upgrade?" threads. Just because it is a little counterculture (counter-fanboy) for this forum doesn't mean it is "dumb."

Nevertheless, we hear about a new phone, one that plans to implement nearly all of the missing basic features of the iPhone (MMS, video, multitasking, tethering, c/p), then about 2 months later, we suddenly see Apple introduce these much wanted features (features that have been developed many months ago by mere amateurs via jailbreaking - but some still think Apple, the multibillion dollar corporation, just needed more time to develop these functions). Next, we hear Apple threatening legal action, which a lot of people took to be directed at Palm. My point is, Apple felt (feels) threatened by these developments at Palm. We didn't see these developments with the G1 because Apple has some sort of undertable agreement with Google not to compete (Google agreed not to implement multitouch at Apple's request). As for the Storm, that phone is a joke - it was never serious competition.

Hmm, correlation is not necessarily causation. Putting it on it head, will Palm be reacting to the OS 3.0 and rumors of the new iPhone, to improve their hardware and software, prior to launch? The sooner they have their Moscone West moment, the better - and provide a lot more discussion points. "We think competition is great, we think it makes all of us better..."

Anyone wanting to put a guess out as to handset sales for the first 12 months for the Pre?

Simple: those phone were ******. Did you think the Sprint Instinct was going to do anything? No, it's junk. Same with the storm. We'll have to see about the Pre. But if anything was going to make apple change it would likely be the pre.

LOL at those phones being ****, but you when you guys were proclaiming them "iphone killers", they weren't **** then?

The Palm Pre is superior to the iPhone IMO after looking at it on their website.

It's an iPhone killer when you compare devices BUT no ones going to switch networks ESPECIALLY to Sprint to get it and Apple fans are very very loyal.

Is the Palm Pre superior to the iPhone? Yes

Should Apple worry about it? No.

Oh so you've used one to know it's superior, Apple has sold 21 million phones, 35 000 aps, 1 billion downlaods, what are the stats for the Pre?

Goodness, I feel vilified!

I made the post because I honestly feel that the Pre is the first handset with real potential to gobble up some otherwise iPhone customers, to offer a comparably good phone.

I suppose my point was broader than the example I gave:
Apple is of course affected and influenced by competitive alternatives, but they haven't really been much threatened. And now they are, at least more so.

If nothing else, this post has proved an interesting platform for debate
^.^
So I'm happy.
LOL, we heard the same before the release of the G1, Storm, and all those "iphone killers", the sure stole many iphone customers, lol.

Go back in my post history as far as you please and show me a shread of evidence where I said the Instinct or the Storm were good phones, then we'll talk.

I don't exactly know why you are so defensive about the iPhone. Please explain? It's just a phone. And just like anything else in a capitalistic society, competition breeds innovation and a better consumer experience.

We all know apple is reacting (as they should) to the competition. They could have given us most of the stuff in 3.0 in 2.0 . Last year they announced 2.0 in june and released it in july. This year they announced 3.0 several month earlier, I wonder why.

The Palm Pre was announced in January, 3.0 was announced in March. How did Apple developed 3.0 in 2 months?

They had to be working on it for a lot longer than that.

Yeah they were already working on 3.0 . They could have given us most of the things in 3.0 in 2.0 if they wanted to. Thats my point. I dont think it takes that long to develop features that are more than 3 yrs old on other devices. MMs can be added to any basic phone without issue.

Yeah, Apple could have just copied the code for those features and it would be fine, right?

Instead we got a much smarter and funcional implementation of most of those features. Oh, the horror...

Those features are available on devices that exist for years, they didn't get them when they started either. Apple just started with a completely new device. They have to work out everything from the ground up.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying that everything Apple does is right and that competition isn't good for them. I think it's great. But I don't think they just added these features because of competition, they added because people wanted them and found a way to implement them in a much better way than the competition, and that does take time. That's what Apple does. I just love how copy and paste works on the iPhone, for example, and I am actually glad that they took the time to do it right.

Right in this case relative and not definative. According to apple the first gen iphone is not capable of mms. We all know that this is bull.

These phones didn't have these functions at first because the technology was yet to be developed (for consumer use). As the smartphones' technological knowledge pool increased and features were developed, they were added to phones. In Apple's case, all these technologies already exist. It doesn't take any new technology or innovation to implement MMS, tethering, video, etc. None of these features/techologies are new to the smartphone industry. Besides, amateur programers implemented these features for the iPhone months/years before Apple could. Some features, like tethering ability, was already developed by Apple, but intentionally withheld from consumer use.

Another way to look at this; if you were to start a new car company right now, would you leave out the stereo, anti-lock brakes, leather seats, air conditioning, etc. and say "sorry, we're new, we just haven't developed these features yet"?

...and that does take time.

Apparently not for jailbreakers, who developed these very same functions in their bedroom.

That's what Apple does. I just love how copy and paste works on the iPhone, for example, and I am actually glad that they took the time to do it right.

I agree with you completely with c/p. It is implemented very well. But, this cannot be said for everything Apple has put out for the iPhone. I remember prior to 2.2, Safari was basically unusable. Lack of elegance has not stopped Apple from releasing features before.

Here's more speculation to add to all the speculation in this thread

note #10 on the list

Actually, the speculation in this thread is not if the Pre will be a viable product. It may very well fail. The question is whether the introduction of the Pre has spurred Apple into implementing more features into firmware 3.0 than it already would have (if the Pre was never introduced). This thread doesn't need to be anymore "Pre sux, iPhone rulz" than it already is.

I think if it wasnt for the Pre we'd still be stuck without getting anywhere near the stuff that we'd be getting with 3.0
Apple was so slow to implement stuff and was releasing stuff that noone even care/wanted.
When the Pre came out with tons of features that the iphone lacked including copy/paste, A2DP, MMS, tethering, multi-touch, search function,Push etc...
Thats when it light up a fire up Apples rear end.
Now all of a sudden we're getting tons of stuff that users where asking for since day one and then some.
So IMO I'd like to thank Palm for this and without competition companys wouldnt even bother improving, they'd just sit there and collect money with whatever works.

I remember your posts since you always talking smack about the iphone, you were here rambling on about if Apple doesn't deliver much needed features, they would be taught a lesson by all these phones being relesed, what lesson did all those iphone killers teach?

What the heck are you talking about, 2.0 was annouced in March last year and released in July. 3.0 was announced in March of this year, what is your bloody point.

Damn they better release their "iphone killer" soon enough then.

LOL at these dudes so Apple did all that work for 3.0 in 2 months after the Pre was annouced, are some of yo dudes serious.
