Actually, the speculation in this thread is not if the Pre will be a viable product. It may very well fail. The question is whether the introduction of the Pre has spurred Apple into implementing more features into firmware 3.0 than it already would have (if the Pre was never introduced). This thread doesn't need to be anymore "Pre sux, iPhone rulz" than it already is.

Hey I agree with you, the Pre may or not fail and whether it "sux" or not, I could care less. However, the discussion on this thread of if/why/how Apple is being spurred on by the introduction of the Pre is still speculation, but that's why we're on this site. :D

I think they did most of it in no time.
Like it takes years to implement stuff like copy/paste, search, MMS that $20 cellphones had for the past 6 years.
Rotating keyboard that is there for safari but not for the rest of the phone, like its really complicated.
If single developers for cydia can do it by themselves, you think Apple couldnt do as a company?
Maybe they borrowed some ideas by the jailbreak community;)

LOL at these dudes so Apple did all that work for 3.0 in 2 months after the Pre was annouced, are some of yo dudes serious.

Also look at the AT&T memo that leaked out.
It lists comparisons between the 2 phones, if AT&T and Apple didnt care/worry about their new competitor the Pre they wouldnt bother with any of that.
Obviously its a worthy competitor, definetelly alot better than what RIMM did with the Storm :D

Everything Palm should with the Pre has been available on the G1 and Storm even before anyone knew what the Pre was. Apple had already set a precedent of allowing a new iphone OS in March. 3.0 was already in the works by the time 2.0 was previewed in March of '08.

You know AT&T has also leaked out memos for other phones in comparison to the iphone?

I never heard of any phone with copy+paste really...I do stay in touch with tech but I geuss I missed that part, specially the part where 20 dollar phones had copy and paste...for 6 years? Ok well let us see, we are in 2009 now and 6 years ago was 2003...I don't even know copy and paste even existed for computers back then, so wtf are you saying? Some smart-phones don't even have search and copy+paste, and I don't want you to point me to some nokia x5gtthousand or w/e that costs like 600 bucks.

Back to your point, my RAZR didn't have copy and paste or search so yeah... I got it around 50 - 100$ and that was back in 2006 so seriously wtf are you trying to say?

The PRE from what I've seen so far look like the only decent contender to the iPhone. However I don't think many people will be switching to Sprint. When the GSM version comes out I'll probably give it a try, I'm sure we are all going to be amazed with the new iPhone but the more competition the better for all of us (consumers).

The pre is ugly as hell though, the only phone that can compare to the iphone in looks is the G1. I really like the iPhone because of how it looks, and I think Palm did a bad job with the style of the pre I mean look at it:

It's cheap plastic, both the screen and case, and the wierd curve it has would make it bad for handling. Well that's just me...

I said $20 cellphones that can do MMS, not Copy/paste.
You don't even know if copy and paste even existed for computers in 2003? You're really clueless then.
Why dont you learn how to read first and then try to stay in touch with tech ......

True, but I think Pre did the trick and shook up Apple a little.
In a good way offcourse for us. Just my 02

That's why I'm really looking forward to the Pre 2, or even another Palm phone that borrows heavily from the Pre that is available on AT&T.

Ando no, it doesn't take years to develop copy and paste, search, MMS. But it's not that quick to develop a phone from scratch that has all the same features as phones that have been developing for years...

"Slow and steady wins the race". :D

Competition is FTW. Monopolies are NOT. I was (and still hope) that the Zune and other competitors step up and manage to beat Apple into innovating again.

It's called the iPod Touch, it is the future of the iPod, the other models will stick around for people who like those form factors.

I agree.
Things like Clippy, swirrly MMS, PdaNet and many other Jailbreak apps were there providing those features missing on the iphone by amateur developers.
You think Apple couldnt perfect those and release them?

You're right. I'm sure all of the iPhone OS programmers were twiddling their thumbs.

- Clippy was very buggy and it was not the best implementation. It was a great effort but it actually takes time to develop it well, make it work well across apps, and Apple did it now.

- Apple actually allowed tethering for a while with NetShare, but AT&T made them take it down from the appstore. It probably took them a while to reach an agreement with the carriers for tethering.

- About MMS I think Apple didn't release it before because they wanted people to replace it with e-mail. Since that didn't happen and people continued complaining they decided to add it now.

I hear that, good attempts not perfect though.
And the missing MMS was a big drawback in many countrys outside of the US.

Yes I agree. I understand their reasoning behind wanting people to just use email, but I think it's a bit early for that since most people don't have phones with data plans.

Lol :D
Who knows, but from what I saw the Jailbreak community gave tons of features to the hacked iphones than apple did since June of 2007.

I'm guessing that's because the Jailbreak community wasn't busy implementing support for third party applications, system wide GPS access, notification services (which has been in the works since last WWDC), bug fixes, etc.

Looking at what outside developers have done is like saying Apple has unlimited manpower. I'm sure there's a budget and a limited staff, even for the iPhone. Apple's made constant improvements to the OS since the iPhone was released with very few noticeable bugs.

Starting from zero, I'd assume that every programmer has stayed busy and that MMS wasn't first on the list of features. I'd bet that building a successful application store provided a much better return than MMS, search and copy and paste would have all combined. Arguably, the App Store is the iPhone's killer feature.

Well Cydia and Installer were something like the appstore. A way to install 3rd party apps to the phone but not up to the level of the Appstore.
IMO the Iphone is the biggest seller for Apple so Im sure by bringing in all that revenue it would get extra attention but noone knows for sure.
I agree that MMS and copy/paste probably werent up on Apple's list but the constant complain and negative comments about the iphone missing them may have did it also.

Hacked iPhone apps have less dev support, and are generally not as nice.
They can, however, give functionality the App store denies, such as wifi tethering, 3rd party sims.

I think the App Store is the best thing to happen to iPhone, really...

Without the ability to jailbreak I would not even have the iPhone. The app store is great, but I need both to complete my phone.
