i know out of the box, it supports mp3s, but i was reading somewhere that a program allowed you to use wmas and unprotected aacs, but then when i went to the website for the software, they seemed to indicate that they don't support aacs (or maybe it was vice versa  ). Can someone shed light on this situation?

I believe the newest version of "pTunes" supports unprotected AAC. Also, when you upgrade from the bundled version, you get internet streaming. It's actually a nice program.

and that's the program i have to spend $40 to get the "deluxe" version to play aac?
Why aren't there any free music programs?

I love my TX too, but then I've been a Palm user since 1998 (Palm Pilot Personal), so I guess I'm a bit biased :)

One factor you have to bear in mind is that Palm has stopped development of the Palm Desktop for the Mac. The last incarnation works, but it's hideous and kinda sucks. So you may have to spend extra money on the Missing Sync, which is a great app to sync with the Mac's native apps, but costs a cool $40.

now I just send/receive all files through bluetooth, haven't used sync for a long time. but bluetooth isn't fast (20KB/s), so don't try with large file, instead, get a card reader.

I like Palm Desktop for Windows, but even it seems to have stalled out in development. My understanding is it has at least some issues with Vista. Palm Desktop for Mac is just horrifyingly bad, but with Missing Sync you just sync to the Apple apps.

I bought Missing Sync when I got my MBP. It's much cleaner than the built-in iSync / Palm Desktop integration.

Reviving an old thread again

I ordered a T/X off newegg, it should be here tuesday :)
but in my infinite wisdom, i decided to browse the competition, and came across the nokia n770 and n800. Granted, they are built more for web browsing, and lack many PDA capabilities, but since they are open source linux based, that would mean people could code programs for them. Once again, i am torn between these, the n800 has 802.11b and g wireless, but you can't sync it to your computer. The n800 has better resolution, but the t/x is more compact. The t/x has the potential to have more memory, but the n800 has a richer web browser. The n800 is more expensive and supposedly slower than the t/x. Did i go wrong ordering the t/x?

Anyone have a nokia n770 or n800 that has any feedback on them?

I don't own a n700 personally, but my friend does.
Basically, avoid.
The idea of the thing is great, it has a nice screen, and the device itself is nicely put together. But that is where the nice things end.
The OS/UI is flaky and unstable. Yes, it does crash in normal operation, and yes, you need to do hard resets quite often.
Forget about installing software on it too. It is very easy to brick, and hard to troubleshoot.
Text entry on it sucks. You can type maybe a few 10-letter words before aggravation takes over.
Can't comment on battery life.

Oh, and a wise decision on your part not going with Windows Mobile. These devices look great in the store, and have nice fatures on paper... But they do inherit the "entropy creep" feature of desktop Windows. As you install programs on them and do work with them, they run crappier and crappier with time - until the moment you need to reinstall Windows. There is less software available for W|M than for Palm, and W|M programs also take literally 10 times the space of their Palm equivalent.

I would recommend the x51v (if you can find one, Dell doesn't make them anymore I don't think). The VGA screen is top notch for web browsing (640x480).

Get a PDA if you plan on using the organization features. I have pocket informant and pocket breeze installed on my PDA - the power of this software is something the calendar app on the iPhone can't match.

Palm OS is nice too, but WM offers a bit more flexibility.

I have a palm tx and its dead easy to use. I have had no problems with it and its great as it is a scaled down pda and lightweight to carryy around that makes life alot easier.

Alright, so it seems like a made a good decision :D

No comments on the N800? I heard it fixed a lot of the problems that the N770 had

i was looking into a N800 myself. i don't remember where i found the reviews (sorry) but they said it's still slow, unstable, not much software available. basically not better that the N770.

i decided to stick with my palm zire 72 and go with a T/X or similar later.

I owned one before my TX, and it crashed multiple times a day, sometimes knocking out my entire documents folder. I guess it was related to having an SD card installed, which may have been patched, but that's the kind of experiences I've always had with Windows Mobile.

Thanks guys, i no longer regret my decision :D
If all the alternatives are less stable than the tx, then i wouldn't have bought them, even if the os/screen/web browsing was better

I can't remember if I posted about it yet, but I went ahead and bought a new TX also. Ordered from Amazon, and it shipped Saturday (free shipping, so it's not supposed to get here until Thursday at the earliest).

the bad thing about my pda though is that if the battery dies...all your data goes with it...

My new TX ended up getting here last Monday-half a week early.

Maybe it's my imagination, but it actually seems built better than my old one. The screen doesn't even hum, and it seems to run faster than the already fast older TX.

At any rate, if anyone's considering between the E2 and TX, don't hesitate to go with the TX. The extra $80 or so actually gets you more than even the differences on paper, as the E2 is still running an older, buggier version of the OS. The speed difference is HUUUUUGE also-much larger than a 50% speed boost would seem to indicate.

The Z22 and TX were the first (and last) PDAs released after the company was sort of reasimilated back to being Palm, and it actually does show.
